Chapter 9: The Last Lie
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t think.
I couldn’t even understand what I was seeing.
Because the person standing beside Michael in the picture was not Richard.
It was me.
Not exactly.
The angle was different.
The lighting was poor.
But the reflection in the glass behind them showed enough.
My face.
My jacket.
My watch.
The same watch I wore every day.
My breath caught.
“What is this?””
Richard looked confused.
“What?””
I pushed the photo across the table.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Confusion.
Real confusion.
“I’ve never seen this.””
I stared at him.
“You just said this was evidence.””
“It is.””
“Then why am I in it?””
Richard picked up the picture.
He studied it carefully.
Then his face went pale.
“David…”
“What?””
He looked at me.
“This isn’t possible.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that right before they explain something impossible.””
Richard turned the picture over.
There was handwriting on the back.
A date.
A location.
And one sentence.
*The final piece is the person who thinks he knows the truth.*
I felt a chill.
The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.
Too loud.
Too exposed.
I grabbed the file.
“We’re leaving.””
Richard stood.
“David, wait.””
“No.””
“Listen to me.””
“I have listened to everyone.””
My voice shook.
“My wife. My brother. You.””
People around us looked over.
I lowered my voice.
“And every person I listened to had a secret.””
Richard followed me outside.
“David, you need to understand something.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Someone is manipulating all of us.””
The words stopped me.
Because that was the one thing that finally made sense.
Vanessa.
Michael.
Richard.
Maybe none of them were telling the whole story.
But someone had been moving pieces around.
Someone had been making sure we turned against each other.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
No response.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
“David?””
My heart stopped.
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere I can talk.””
“You disappeared.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
A pause.
“Of the person who started this.””
I looked at Richard.
“Who?””
Her voice dropped.
“Your father.””
The world went silent.
I didn’t speak.
Because my father had been dead for five years.
“What did you say?””
“David, listen to me.””
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you talking about?””
“He wasn’t the person you thought he was.””
I felt anger rising.
“No.””
“I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“About Michael. About the company. About Lily.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Vanessa.””
“I’m trying to protect you.””
I almost ended the call.
But then she said:
“Michael didn’t take Lily because he wanted her.””
I froze.
“Then why?””
“He took her because he knew someone else was coming for her.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Before she answered, the call cut out.
I looked at Richard.
He had heard enough.
“Your father?””
I nodded slowly.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
But my mind was already searching through memories.
My father.
A strict man.
A successful businessman.
Someone who always believed family came second to reputation.
After my mother died, he became colder.
More distant.
But he had loved Lily.
At least, I thought he had.
I drove home in silence.
When I arrived, Elena was sitting with Lily in the living room.
The sight of them almost broke me.
Two people who had been hurt by the same lies.
Two people I needed to protect.
“Daddy!””
Lily ran toward me.
I caught her.
She felt real.
Safe.
Alive.
Everything else could wait.
But only for a moment.
Because Elena stood up holding something.
“Mr. David.””
“What is it?””
She handed me an old envelope.
“Another one.””
My heart sank.
“Where did you find this?””
“In the attic.””
I stared at it.
The attic.
A place no one entered except during holidays.
A place filled with old family memories.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
But this time, the handwriting wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It was my father’s.
My hands shook.
*David,*
*If you are reading this, then the truth finally reached you.*
I stopped.
Lily looked at me.
“Daddy?””
I forced myself to keep reading.
*I made mistakes. Bigger mistakes than any father should make.*
My eyes moved down.
*Your brother was never the person I feared. He was only the person I could control.*
My breathing became uneven.
*Seven years ago, when Vanessa became pregnant, I discovered the truth. I knew Michael was involved. I knew Vanessa was afraid. But I also knew something else.*
The next sentence made my blood freeze.
*Lily was never supposed to be born into this family.*
I dropped the letter.
No.
I picked it up again.
I needed to understand.
*Her existence threatened everything I built.*
My father.
The man who had died.
The man who was supposed to be gone.
The letter continued.
*I created a plan to separate Vanessa and Michael. I convinced Vanessa that David would abandon her if he knew the truth. I convinced Michael that Lily was his only connection to power.*
My hands shook.
He had manipulated everyone.
For years.
*But I underestimated one thing.*
I read the final lines.
*David loved Lily more than anyone could control.*
Tears filled my eyes.
Because even my father, the man who caused this nightmare, had known that.
Then the final sentence appeared.
*There is one person still alive who knows why I did all of this. Find her before Michael does.*
Below it was a name.
A name I knew.
A name from my childhood.
My mother’s sister.
My aunt.
But that wasn’t what scared me.
What scared me was the handwriting beneath the name.
A newer message.
Not my father’s.
Someone else had written it.
*You’re getting close. Stop before Lily learns who you really are.*
I froze.
Elena noticed.
“What happened?””
I looked at Lily.
Then at the message.
The words felt like a threat.
Not just against me.
Against my daughter.
Because whoever wrote it knew something I didn’t.
Something about me.
Something about Lily.
Something that could destroy the last piece of truth I had left.
Then my phone buzzed.
A location.
A message from the unknown number.
*Come alone if you want to know who Lily’s real family is.*
And beneath it:
*Bring the DNA test.*
I stared at the screen.
Because the person who sent it knew about the test.
And they knew something else.
May you like
Something nobody should have known.
They knew where I kept it.
