Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Everything

For a long time, I just stared at the name.

Richard.

My lawyer.

My friend.

The man who had sat at my kitchen table and told me we would protect Lily.

The man who had listened while I broke down.

The man who had helped me piece together the truth.

Or at least, that was what I believed.

I read the final line of Vanessa’s letter again.

*The man who caused everything seven years ago has been watching our family this whole time.*

And underneath it:

*Richard.*

My hands went numb.

Elena watched my face carefully.

“Mr. David?””

I didn’t answer.

Because my mind was fighting itself.

No.

It couldn’t be.

Richard had known me for years.

He had helped me build my company.

He had attended Lily’s birthday parties.

He had brought her books and called her “little genius.””

He was the person I called when my life collapsed.

But the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.

Everyone I trusted had been hiding something.

Everyone.

“What does it say?”” Elena asked softly.

I folded the letter.

“Something I don’t understand.””

She looked at the envelope.

“Do you believe it?””

I looked at her.

That was the hardest question.

Because believing it meant accepting that I had been surrounded by lies for years.

“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I know that feeling.””

Her words carried pain.

She knew what it felt like to have someone point at you and call you guilty.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

She looked surprised.

“For what?””

“For doubting you.””

A small, sad smile appeared.

“You were scared.””

“I still should have believed you.””

She didn’t answer.

Because we both knew apologies couldn’t erase what happened.

A noise came from upstairs.

My body instantly reacted.

“Lily.””

I rushed up the stairs.

She was standing outside her bedroom, holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

I stopped.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

“Who was here?””

“Elena.””

She relaxed slightly.

“Is Mommy coming back?””

The question caught me off guard.

I knelt down.

“I don’t know, Lily.””

She looked at the floor.

“Is she mad at me?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

“Then why did she do those things?””

I didn’t have an answer.

How could I explain adult choices to a child who still believed people were mostly good?

So I told her the only thing that mattered.

“Sometimes grown-ups make choices that hurt people.””

She looked at me.

“Are you going to make choices that hurt me?””

The question cut deeper than anything else.

“No.””

I held her hand.

“Never on purpose.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“I saw Uncle Michael crying.””

I froze.

“When?””

“Before he took me.””

I sat down beside her.

“What did he say?””

She hugged her rabbit.

“He said he was sorry.””

“For what?””

“I don’t know.””

A thought entered my mind.

Michael wasn’t acting like someone who had everything under control.

He looked guilty.

Afraid.

Like someone trapped.

And now Richard’s name was on the letter.

I needed answers.

That night, I called Richard.

He answered immediately.

“David?””

I listened to his voice.

Looking for something.

Anything.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Can we meet?””

A pause.

“Is something wrong?””

I looked at the letter sitting on the table.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

I gave him a location.

A quiet coffee shop downtown.

Public.

Safe.

I didn’t tell him why.

When I arrived, Richard was already there.

He smiled slightly.

But when he saw my expression, the smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

I sat across from him.

“I found something.””

He waited.

I placed the letter on the table.

His eyes moved to the handwriting.

The moment he saw it, his face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You know this?””

He looked back at me.

“What?””

“You recognized it.””

“No.””

“You did.””

Richard leaned back.

“David, what is this?””

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I asked:

“Why did you never tell me about Vanessa and Michael?””

His expression froze.

“What?””

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew something was wrong.””

“David—”

“You asked me if I ever questioned whether Lily was mine.””

Silence.

“You already knew.””

Richard looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he sighed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The same sentence.

Everyone used the same excuse.

Protect you.

Help you.

Save you.

And every time, it meant:

I lied to you.

“Protect me from what?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“I found out years ago.””

“How?””

“Vanessa came to me.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Before Lily was born.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“She was scared.””

“Because of Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because she begged me not to.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

“She thought you would leave.””

“She was right.””

Richard shook his head.

“No, David. You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

His eyes became serious.

“Michael wasn’t just involved with Vanessa.””

The room felt colder.

“What does that mean?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“He was involved in something much bigger.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Financial fraud.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Your brother was using your company.””

My heart stopped.

“My company?””

Richard nodded.

“Seven years ago, money was disappearing.””

I remembered.

Small accounting issues.

Reports that never made sense.

Numbers that were always corrected.

I had trusted Michael to help manage parts of the business.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was gathering evidence.””

“Seven years?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“I thought I could fix it without destroying your family.””

I stood up.

“No.””

People in the coffee shop looked over.

I lowered my voice.

“No. You don’t get to say that.””

“David—”

“You watched me live a lie.””

“I was trying to protect Lily.””

I froze.

“What does Lily have to do with this?””

Richard looked at me.

Then he said the words I never expected.

“Because Michael wasn’t just trying to steal money.””

I waited.

“He was trying to use Lily.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because Lily was the only thing Vanessa had that could give her power over you.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

“Your brother knew if he controlled Vanessa, he controlled the one person who mattered most to you.””

“Lily.””

Richard nodded.

“But there’s something else.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Richard reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a file.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photographs.

And one picture.

A picture of Michael meeting someone.

A person I recognized.

Someone who had been around my family for years.

Someone I never suspected.

I looked at Richard.

“What am I looking at?””

Richard’s face turned pale.

“The person who helped Michael hide everything.””

My eyes returned to the photo.

Because standing beside my brother was not Vanessa.

Not some stranger.

Not an enemy.

It was someone who had been comforting me while my family collapsed.

Someone who had been asking questions.

Someone who had been guiding the investigation.

Someone I had trusted.

Richard.

But there was one detail that made my blood run cold.

The date on the photo.

May you like

It wasn’t seven years ago.

It was taken three months ago.
