Chapter 9: The Truth My Family Hid
I couldn’t speak.
My father’s voice echoed in my ear.
A mistake.
Twenty years ago.
Michael Carter.
The same name that had haunted Daniel’s life.
The same name connected to Sarah’s disappearance.
And now my family.
“Dad,” I whispered.
“What happened?””
There was silence.
Then:
“Are you with Daniel?””
I looked around the room.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Evelyn.
All of them waiting.
“Yes.””
My father sighed.
“Then you need to know the truth.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Tell me.””
“I knew Michael.””
“I know. You were business partners.””
“No.””
His voice became heavier.
“He wasn’t just my partner.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Another pause.
“He was my brother.””
Nobody moved.
I lowered the phone slowly.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“What did he say?””
I couldn’t answer.
My father continued.
“Your mother never told you about him.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael ruined our family.””
I swallowed.
“How?””
My father’s voice cracked.
“He betrayed everyone.””
The room became silent.
I put the phone on speaker.
“Dad, everyone needs to hear this.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Who is there?””
“Daniel. Sarah. Evelyn.””
Silence.
When my father spoke again, his voice changed.
“You’re with Evelyn?””
She immediately looked away.
My eyes narrowed.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why did you react like that?””
Finally, he said:
“Because Evelyn knew.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Knew what?””
My father continued.
“She knew what Michael did.””
Evelyn stood.
“Enough.””
My father’s voice sharpened.
“No, Evelyn. It’s time.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you know?””
Evelyn looked trapped.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Again.
That phrase.
I was beginning to hate those words.
Daniel stepped closer.
“From what?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“From the truth.””
Sarah crossed her arms.
“Then tell it.””
My father took a deep breath.
“Michael was involved in illegal financial deals.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
“He used our company.””
Daniel looked at the document in his hand.
“Is that why he disappeared?””
My father answered:
“Yes.””
Sarah looked confused.
“But what does that have to do with me?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father said:
“Because Michael was the reason Daniel and Sarah lost everything.””
Daniel went still.
“What?””
“He manipulated your business records.””
Daniel’s face changed.
The pieces were connecting.
“He made it look like I was responsible.””
My father continued:
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You thought you destroyed the company?””
He nodded slowly.
“That was what I believed.””
My father sighed.
“You weren’t the one who failed.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I carried that guilt for ten years.””
My father’s next words changed everything.
“Michael didn’t just ruin the business.””
A pause.
“He used Sarah.””
Sarah’s face went pale.
“What?””
My father continued.
“He knew she was the one person who could expose him.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“What did he do?””
My father said quietly:
“He threatened her.””
Sarah stepped back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
The room became unbearable.
“What kind of threat?””
My father answered:
“He threatened to destroy Daniel if she didn’t disappear.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“You left because of him?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought…”
She stopped.
“I thought if I stayed, he would destroy you.””
Daniel looked broken.
All these years.
All these misunderstandings.
All this pain.
Created by one person.
Michael.
Then Evelyn spoke.
Quietly.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped her eyes.
“I knew Michael was dangerous.””
Daniel stared.
“But?””
“I thought keeping Sarah away would protect you.””
Sarah laughed sadly.
“You still chose for everyone.””
Evelyn looked down.
“I was wrong.””
Those words sounded strange coming from her.
Because it was the first time she had admitted it.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood froze.
A picture appeared.
It was a photo of our house.
Taken moments ago.
Someone was outside.
Below the image was a message.
*“You’re getting too close.””*
Daniel saw it.
His face changed.
“Who sent that?””
Another message appeared.
This time with a name.
Michael.
*“Ask your wife why her father helped me disappear.””*
I looked at my father.
He was still on speaker.
“Dad?””
No answer.
“Dad?””
Finally, his voice came.
Broken.
“I’m sorry.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you sorry for?””
A long silence.
Then he said:
“Because Michael is right.””
I stopped breathing.
My father whispered:
May you like
“I helped him leave.””
And then the call ended.
