Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Lie

The old phone sat in the center of the table like a bomb.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed normally.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Who sent that?””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“I told you. I thought my phone was lost.””

Evelyn suddenly stood.

“You should leave.””

Everyone turned.

Sarah laughed.

“Of course.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“This has gone too far.””

“No,” Sarah replied.

“It went too far ten years ago.””

Daniel picked up the phone.

“Mom, what happened?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Silence.

“From what?””

His voice became louder.

For the first time, I saw Daniel stop being the obedient son.

He wasn’t asking.

He was demanding.

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

I almost couldn’t believe her.

“You don’t know?””

She looked at me.

“There are things that happened that night that even I didn’t understand.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“But you knew enough to keep my phone.””

Evelyn said nothing.

That was the problem.

She always had explanations.

Until she didn’t.

Daniel turned toward Sarah.

“Where were you after you left?””

Sarah’s expression softened.

“Trying to survive.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of pain.

“I had no money. No family nearby. No one.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Why didn’t you call me?””

Sarah laughed sadly.

“I did.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“Your mother made sure I couldn’t.””

Daniel’s face collapsed.

I watched him absorb the truth piece by piece.

A person can survive one betrayal.

But several at once?

That breaks something.

“I need to know everything,” he said.

Sarah nodded.

“Then we need to find Michael.””

The name changed the room.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he knows what happened.””

“How?””

Sarah looked at the phone.

“Because those messages came from him.””

Daniel froze.

I looked at the screen.

“You recognize the number?””

Sarah nodded.

“I saved it.””

Daniel took the phone.

He looked through the old messages.

Then stopped.

“What?””

I moved closer.

He turned the screen toward us.

There was a message from Michael.

Sent one week after Sarah disappeared.

*“It’s done. She won’t come back.””*

My stomach turned.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Done?””

He looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel laughed.

A broken laugh.

“You keep saying that.””

He threw the phone onto the table.

“But somehow you always know enough to hide things.””

The room went quiet.

I wanted to feel sympathy for him.

I did.

But there was another voice inside me.

The voice reminding me that I was still standing in a marriage full of locked doors.

I went upstairs.

Daniel followed.

“Please don’t walk away from me.””

I stopped.

“You’re asking me not to walk away?””

He looked hurt.

“Yes.””

I turned around.

“Do you understand how many times Sarah probably said those same words?””

He had no answer.

I continued.

“You’re not the only person who lost something.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. You’re finally learning.””

That sentence hurt both of us.

He sat on the edge of the bed.

Our bed.

The same bed where all of this started.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

I looked at him.

“But you did.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

I sat across from him.

“Tell me one thing.””

“Anything.””

“When you married me… did you think about her?””

His silence lasted too long.

I looked away.

That was enough.

“I was trying to forget.””

I nodded.

“And I was the replacement.””

“No.””

“You don’t get to decide that.””

He stood.

“You weren’t a replacement.””

“Then what was I?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

A knock interrupted us.

Sarah stood at the door.

“We found something.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She held a document.

“Michael’s address.””

My heart tightened.

“How?””

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“Because someone wanted us to find it.””

She handed him the paper.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What?””

I looked.

The address.

The name.

Everything.

Because the place listed wasn’t a random apartment.

It was a company.

A company I knew.

I whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I pointed at the paper.

“That’s the company my father invested in.””

Everyone went silent.

Daniel stared.

“Your father?””

I nodded slowly.

“My father’s business partner was Michael Carter.””

The room froze.

Suddenly, the past wasn’t just Daniel’s.

It was mine too.

Sarah looked between us.

“That can’t be a coincidence.””

No.

It couldn’t.

Because the secret wasn’t buried in Daniel’s past.

It was connected to my family.

And then my phone rang.

My father’s name appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Dad?””

His voice came through.

Shaking.

“Where did you find that name?””

I froze.

“What?””

“Michael Carter.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know about him?””

A long pause.

May you like

Then my father whispered:

“Because I thought I buried that mistake twenty years ago.””
