Chapter 8: The Last Page of My Father’s Will
The cabin door handle moved again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Nobody spoke.
The kind of fear that filled the room wasn’t loud.
It didn’t make people scream.
It made them freeze.
Daniel looked toward the window.
Mr. Henry reached for the old fireplace poker beside him.
Richard quietly turned off the lights.
Lauren stood completely still.
For once, she looked like she didn’t know what to do.
I held my phone tightly.
My father’s last words still echoed in my head.
Find the original will.
Because it contains the name of the person who betrayed me.
The handle moved one more time.
Then the door opened.
A man stepped inside.
I almost screamed.
“Dad?””
The man froze.
But it wasn’t my father.
It was an older man wearing a wet jacket.
A stranger.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on Daniel.
“Daniel.””
Daniel lowered the poker.
“Who are you?””
The man looked exhausted.
Like he had been running for years.
“My name is Michael Reed.””
Nobody moved.
Richard’s face changed.
“You.””
The man looked at him.
“You remember me.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Everyone remembers you.””
I looked between them.
“Who is he?””
Michael looked at me.
Then at the photograph of my father on the wall.
“I was your father’s closest friend before everything fell apart.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Michael reached into his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
But he slowly pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Damaged.
And covered in water stains.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
I stopped breathing.
Emma.
My name.
Again.
Michael handed it to me.
“Your father told me to give this to you if the truth came out.””
I stared at the envelope.
“How did you know I would be here?””
Michael looked at Lauren.
Nobody missed it.
Lauren looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“You told him.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why is he looking at you?””
“I don’t know.””
Michael sighed.
“She didn’t tell me.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Then who did?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the envelope.
“Your father knew someone would try to stop you from finding this.””
I carefully opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Not a letter.
A legal document.
At the top were three words.
*FINAL AMENDED WILL.*
My hands started shaking.
The original will.
The thing everyone had been searching for.
The thing Lauren believed I stole.
The thing my father had hidden.
I started reading.
The first lines were normal.
Property.
Accounts.
Assets.
Then I reached the section that made my heart stop.
*Beneficiaries.*
I expected my name.
Maybe Daniel’s.
Maybe Lauren’s.
But instead, there was something else.
A condition.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“What?””
I handed it to him.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face changed.
“What does this mean?””
Richard stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
I pulled it back.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I tightened my grip.
“No more secrets.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
I looked at Michael.
“Explain.””
He sighed.
“Charles changed the will six months ago.””
“Why?””
“Because he discovered someone had been manipulating his family.””
My eyes moved toward Lauren.
She looked away.
Again.
But Michael continued.
“He knew the person responsible wasn’t after the money.””
“Then what were they after?””
“Control.””
I looked down at the document.
“What is this condition?””
Michael hesitated.
“Your father created a legal requirement.””
“For what?””
“To inherit the trust.””
I waited.
Michael looked directly at me.
“You, Daniel, and Lauren must agree together.””
Silence.
I blinked.
“What?””
“The trust cannot be controlled by one person.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“So he forced us to work together.””
“Yes.””
Lauren shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
“No, he wouldn’t do that.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew we would never agree.””
The room went quiet.
And that was the point.
My father had created a lock.
One that could only be opened by the three people most damaged by his secrets.
Me.
Daniel.
Lauren.
Michael continued.
“But there was another part.””
My stomach tightened.
“What part?””
He looked at the will.
“The trust would only transfer after Charles was officially declared dead.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at him.
“He’s alive.””
“Yes.””
“Then why create this?””
Michael looked away.
“Because Charles knew someone would try to make sure he never returned.””
A chill moved through me.
Richard suddenly spoke.
“Where did you get this?””
Michael looked at him.
“You know where.””
Richard’s face went pale.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
Michael stepped closer.
“You were there the night Charles wrote it.””
The room changed.
I looked at Richard.
“You saw this?””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Charles made me promise.””
“You all keep saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Promises. Protection. Secrets.””
I held up the will.
“You let me believe my father was dead.””
Richard looked at me.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
“And now?””
The question came out quietly.
“Now I don’t know if I succeeded.””
Before I could respond, a loud noise came from outside.
A car door.
Then another.
Michael moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“They found us.””
Mr. Henry looked at him.
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
The lights outside the cabin turned on.
Bright beams cut through the trees.
Several vehicles.
Surrounding us.
Daniel grabbed the will.
“We leave now.””
But before we moved, Lauren spoke.
“No.””
Everyone stopped.
She was staring at the document.
At one specific line.
“What?””
Her face had gone completely white.
I walked closer.
“What did you see?””
She pointed.
My eyes followed.
The handwriting.
A note written by my father.
Not part of the legal document.
A personal message.
One sentence.
*If Lauren is reading this, it means I failed her again.*
Lauren covered her mouth.
For the first time, she looked like a daughter.
Not an enemy.
Not a rival.
Just a daughter who had spent years believing she wasn’t loved.
She kept reading.
*Lauren, I know you believe I chose Emma over you.*
Tears filled her eyes.
*But the truth is, I was trying to protect you from the same person who destroyed our family.*
Lauren whispered:
“No.””
She shook her head.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
The cabin windows suddenly shattered.
Everyone dropped.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Mr. Henry pulled me down.
Another window broke.
Someone outside shouted:
“Give us the will!””
My heart pounded.
They knew.
They knew we had it.
Daniel looked at me.
“We need to go.””
But Lauren didn’t move.
She was staring at the note.
At one final line.
The line my father had written just for her.
I saw the words.
And my blood ran cold.
*The person you trust most is the one who betrayed us.*
Lauren slowly looked up.
Her eyes moved toward Richard.
Richard stepped backward.
“Lauren…”
She stared at him.
“You knew.””
Nobody moved.
“You knew who did this.””
Richard said nothing.
The silence answered.
Daniel grabbed him by the collar.
“Who?””
Richard looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
Then he whispered:
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
My heart stopped.
“Who, Richard?””
He looked at all of us.
Then toward the broken window.
And finally said the name.
The name nobody expected.
“The person behind everything…”
A pause.
“The person who arranged Charles’s disappearance…”
Another pause.
“…is Charles Bennett himself.””
The room went silent.
I felt the world tilt.
“What?””
Richard’s face was full of regret.
“Your father planned his own disappearance.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
Richard looked at the will in my hand.
“Because he knew the only way to expose the traitor…”
The lights outside moved closer.
The people outside were coming.
Richard whispered:
May you like
“…was to make everyone believe he was dead.””
Then the cabin door exploded inward.
