Chapter 4: The Brother Who Came Back for Revenge

For a moment, nobody moved.

The storage unit felt smaller than it had a few seconds earlier.

The rain outside hit the metal roof like thousands of tiny knocks, each one louder than the last. The smell of wet concrete and old cardboard filled the air.

But I only saw him.

Daniel.

My father’s hidden son.

The man who looked like a version of Dad from a life I never knew existed.

And he was standing beside Lauren.

The person who had pushed me into a freezing lake less than twenty-four hours earlier.

My first instinct was not fear.

It was betrayal.

I looked at Lauren.

“You brought him here?””

She crossed her arms.

“You were going to find out eventually.””

“Find out what?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Everything.””

His voice was deeper than my father’s, but there was something familiar about it. The same calm control Dad had when he was trying not to show anger.

It made my chest hurt.

I held up the letter.

“My father wrote these.””

Daniel’s eyes moved to the envelope.

“Yes.””

“He knew about you.””

“He did.””

“And he never told me.””

Daniel looked away.

“That was always his choice.””

Something in the way he said it made me angry.

“My entire life, I thought I knew my family.””

“You didn’t.””

The answer came so quickly that it felt like a slap.

I tightened my grip on the letter.

“You don’t get to walk into my life and tell me what I knew.””

Daniel stared at me.

“You’re right.””

His voice softened slightly.

“You don’t know me.””

“No, I don’t.””

“And I don’t know you.””

The silence between us stretched.

Then he looked toward the boxes.

“But I know our father.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Don’t call him that like you’re the only one who lost him.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

For a second, the anger disappeared.

Something painful replaced it.

“You think I didn’t lose him?””

The question was quiet.

Almost broken.

“You got twenty-eight years with him.””

I froze.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I got a few months.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Lauren.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Daniel laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“That’s the question everyone should have asked years ago.””

Mr. Henry stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew too.””

“I was trying to protect both of you.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You were protecting him.””

The accusation hung in the air.

I looked at Mr. Henry.

“What does he mean?””

Mr. Henry looked down.

And that scared me.

Because Henry was the one person who had seemed certain.

The one person who seemed to know the truth.

Now he looked guilty.

“Your father made mistakes,” Henry said.

Daniel shook his head.

“Mistakes?””

He pointed toward the boxes.

“He spent decades pretending I didn’t exist.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Daniel looked at Lauren.

Then back at me.

“Afraid of losing everything.””

Lauren finally spoke.

“Emma, don’t listen to him.””

I turned toward her.

“You have a lot of nerve telling me who to trust.””

Her face hardened.

“You think I’m the villain because I wanted what was mine?””

“You assaulted me.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

Lauren walked closer.

“You have no idea what your father did.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel watched her carefully.

“That’s because she can’t.””

Lauren turned sharply.

“Don’t.””

“You were supposed to convince her.””

“Shut up.””

“You were supposed to make her hate me.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Daniel.

“What are you talking about?””

Nobody answered.

The silence said enough.

I stepped back.

“Lauren.””

She looked at me.

Her expression was no longer angry.

It was desperate.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

“What way?””

She looked at the floor.

“Where you found out everything at once.””

I felt something cold move through me.

“You knew.””

She didn’t deny it.

“You knew about Daniel.””

“Yes.””

The word barely left her mouth.

“How long?””

“Years.””

My head spun.

“You knew my father had another son?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Lauren’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Because I was trying to fix it.””

“Fix what?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Him.””

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“There it is.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she never saw me as a person.””

Lauren’s voice rose.

“That’s not true.””

“You saw me as a threat.””

“You were a threat.””

The words shocked everyone.

Even her.

Because she had said them out loud.

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Lauren looked at me.

“Because my father changed after he found him.””

The room went silent.

“He stopped talking about the future with me,” she continued.

“He started hiding things. Making plans without me. Meeting with lawyers. Moving documents.””

Daniel looked away.

Lauren’s anger returned.

“I spent my entire life believing I was his daughter.””

“You are,” I said.

She looked at me.

But she didn’t seem comforted.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was the daughter he had.””

She pointed toward Daniel.

“Then he found the son he lost.””

Nobody responded.

Because underneath everything else, I understood something.

Lauren wasn’t just angry about money.

She was afraid.

But fear didn’t excuse what she did.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does my father’s will say?””

Nobody answered.

That was my answer.

“There is a will.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Lauren looked away.

Daniel said:

“Your father hid it.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone would try to destroy it.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Lauren.

She stared back.

And for the first time, she looked ashamed.

My heart sank.

“No.””

Lauren whispered.

“Emma, listen.””

“No.””

I stepped away.

“You knew about the will.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

“I knew there was a document.””

“And you accused me of stealing it?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you had it.””

The excuse was so unbelievable that I almost laughed.

“You attacked me because you thought I had something you wanted?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

Daniel watched me quietly.

Then he reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My father’s handwriting was on the front.

My name.

Again.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He gave it to me.””

My breath stopped.

“When?””

“Three days before he died.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Mr. Henry.

“You said he died the night before.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“He didn’t die three days ago.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“What?””

Daniel held the envelope tighter.

“Your father disappeared three days before the funeral.””

I couldn’t speak.

Mr. Henry closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

I turned toward him.

“Henry.””

He looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“Sorry for what?””

He didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Your father was alive after everyone thought he was dead.””

My fingers went numb.

“Then who was in the coffin?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything again.

“The body was someone who wanted your father erased.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the door.

Like he was afraid someone else might hear.

Then he lowered his voice.

“The person who planned all of this.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

And whispered:

“Someone who has been standing beside you your entire life.””

At that exact moment, my phone began ringing.

I looked down.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

A voice I hadn’t heard since yesterday.

A voice that should have been impossible.

“Emma.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone in that room knew it.

It was my father.

Alive.

“Don’t trust Daniel,” Dad whispered.

A pause.

Then his voice became urgent.

“And whatever you do…”

The line crackled.

“Do not let Lauren find the original will.””

May you like

The call ended.

And on the other side of the storage unit door, someone slowly turned the handle.
