Chapter 7: The Woman Listed as My Mother
I read the hospital record again.
Then a third time.
Vanessa Reed.
The name was printed beneath the words Biological Mother.
I looked at Patricia, waiting for her to tell me there had been a mistake.
"That's not possible.""
Patricia folded her hands.
"Emily, I know this is difficult, but I need you to hear the entire explanation before drawing any conclusions.""
I turned toward my father.
"Dad?""
Michael looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
"Rachel gave birth to you," he said.
"I was there. I held you. I watched her raise you.""
"Then why is Vanessa's name on this record?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Patricia removed another document from her briefcase.
"This is a copy of a hospital admission record from the year Emily was born. It was included in the original trust investigation because someone attempted to use it to challenge Rachel's parental rights.""
I stared at her.
"Who?""
"Thomas Carter.""
My father grabbed the document.
"Why would my brother have a hospital record?""
Patricia sighed.
"Because he was involved in the original investigation.""
I felt sick.
"Investigation into what?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Your birth.""
The room seemed to shrink.
Michael pulled out a chair.
"Patricia, stop speaking in riddles. Tell us what happened.""
She opened the folder.
"Twenty-five years ago, Rachel and Michael experienced complications during pregnancy. Rachel was admitted to a private hospital in Atlanta. The hospital's records show that another woman was also admitted that evening.""
"Who?"" I asked.
"Vanessa Reed.""
I shook my head.
"She was twenty-three. Why would she be at the hospital?""
"According to the original records, Vanessa had given birth several hours earlier.""
My father stood abruptly.
"No.""
Patricia continued.
"Both women delivered baby girls within a short period. The hospital later reported a documentation error involving the newborn identification records.""
I looked at her.
"What kind of error?""
She placed two birth records side by side.
"One infant was initially registered under the wrong maternal information. The hospital corrected the record, but the amended documentation was never properly filed with the county.""
I stared at the papers.
"Are you saying I was switched at birth?""
Patricia nodded slowly.
"That is one possibility.""
Michael shook his head violently.
"Rachel would have told me.""
"Maybe she didn't know.""
"She knew everything about Emily's birth!""
Patricia looked at him.
"Michael, I have a letter from Rachel dated two weeks after the delivery.""
She handed it to him.
My father opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his breathing changed.
"What does it say?"" I whispered.
He couldn't answer.
I took the letter.
Patricia,
I have reviewed the hospital records again. I believe the identification error was deliberate. Vanessa Reed has contacted me twice, asking me not to pursue the matter.
She claims the hospital made an innocent mistake, but I have reason to believe someone altered the original records.
I will not allow anyone to use my daughter as leverage.
If anything happens to me, please protect Emily.
I lowered the letter.
"Mom knew?""
Patricia nodded.
"She suspected something was wrong.""
My father looked devastated.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because the letter indicates she was afraid someone was monitoring the family's communications.""
I couldn't breathe.
For twenty-five years, I'd believed I knew exactly who I was.
Rachel was my mother.
Michael was my father.
Vanessa was the woman who married my father and spent years making my life miserable.
Now someone was suggesting that the truth was much more complicated.
I looked at Michael.
"Did you know Vanessa before I was born?""
He shook his head.
"No. I met her years later.""
Patricia looked down at her notes.
"There's something else.""
She pulled out a photograph.
It showed two newborn babies lying in hospital bassinets.
A handwritten label appeared beneath each photograph.
One read:
*BABY CARTER — RACHEL AND MICHAEL.*
The other read:
*BABY REED — VANESSA.*
I stared at the photographs.
"Where did you get these?""
"From the hospital's archived records.""
"Which baby is me?""
Patricia turned the photograph over.
The back contained a handwritten note.
Infant identification discrepancy — review requested by Dr. Samuel Whitmore.
My father recognized the name.
"Whitmore was the hospital director.""
Patricia nodded.
"And he was Daniel Brooks's uncle.""
Silence.
I slowly stepped away from the table.
"Everyone knew each other?""
"Apparently.""
My phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Stop listening to Patricia. She knows more about your birth than she's telling you.
I showed her.
Patricia read the message.
Then she looked at me.
"Emily, I won't pretend I know everything. But I can tell you what I do know.""
"Then tell me.""
"Rachel raised you. She legally adopted you shortly after your birth, and your adoption records were sealed. Whatever happened at the hospital, she was legally your mother.""
I looked at the hospital paperwork.
"Why would she adopt me if I was already her biological daughter?""
Patricia didn't answer.
My father took my hand.
"Emily, whatever those records say, you're my daughter.""
I wanted to believe him.
But the question had already taken root.
Who had given birth to me?
And why had Vanessa spent so many years hiding the answer?
Before I could ask another question, Patricia's phone rang.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Patricia, it's Robert Hayes.""
She put the call on speaker.
"Robert, we're reviewing the original estate records.""
"I know. That's why I'm calling.""
Michael leaned forward.
"What do you know about Vanessa's birth records?""
There was a long silence.
Then Robert said something unexpected.
"Michael, Vanessa isn't the only person whose identity was changed at that hospital.""
My father frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Robert lowered his voice.
"It means the second baby wasn't Vanessa's.""
I looked at the photograph.
Patricia went pale.
Robert continued.
"The infant listed as Baby Reed was actually registered under another family's name.""
"Whose family?"" I asked.
Robert hesitated.
Then he said:
"The Brooks family.""
My father slowly turned toward me.
Daniel Brooks.
The man who had helped Vanessa move the money.
The man who had signed the false guardianship petition.
The man whose uncle had directed the hospital when I was born.
Suddenly, the entire room felt colder.
Patricia ended the call.
She stared at the photograph for several seconds.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Emily, I think we've been investigating the wrong family.""
