Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
My father's question hung in the hallway.
"Why is my daughter's signature on a document transferring ownership of this house?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
She stood beside the kitchen island, one hand gripping the edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
I descended the stairs.
"What document?""
Michael held it out.
"Come look.""
I approached him cautiously.
The paper was a legal document with several paragraphs of formal language. My full name appeared near the top.
Emily Rose Carter.
Below it was a signature.
My signature.
Or something close enough to fool someone who didn't know me.
I stared at it.
"What is this?""
Michael swallowed.
"It's a property transfer agreement.""
"Property transfer?""
He nodded.
"Three months ago, I signed some preliminary paperwork to reorganize the ownership of the house. Vanessa told me it was part of our estate planning.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"Michael, that's not what happened.""
He didn't look at her.
"Let me finish.""
He pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"This document claims you agreed to transfer your ownership interest in the property.""
I frowned.
"I don't own this house.""
"That's what I thought," he replied.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"Exactly! She doesn't own it. That's why this entire conversation is ridiculous.""
My father raised his hand.
"Then explain why the document lists her as the current beneficiary and contains a transfer of her interest to you.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I looked between them.
"Dad, what does that mean?""
Michael pulled out another sheet.
"Before your mother died, she established a trust for you. She left you money, investments, and a financial interest connected to this property.""
My stomach dropped.
"My mother?""
He nodded.
"Your mother wanted to make sure you always had a secure place to live. The trust was established years ago, but some of its provisions became active after her death.""
I looked down at the document again.
I'd known my mother had left me something.
I was seventeen when she died, and my father had told me everything would be handled when I was older.
But I'd never imagined my stepmother was involved.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Michael's eyes softened.
"I should have. I thought everything was being handled properly.""
Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.
"Oh, this is unbelievable.""
Michael turned.
"What?""
"You're making me sound like some criminal because your daughter doesn't understand basic financial paperwork.""
"Then explain it.""
"I already did. This was part of the estate restructuring.""
"Why is Emily's signature on a document she never saw?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Maybe she forgot.""
I stared at her.
"I didn't forget signing something. I never signed it.""
"Emily, you're always so dramatic.""
"Stop calling me dramatic!""
The words came out louder than I intended.
Vanessa blinked.
I had rarely raised my voice to her.
Not because she deserved my respect, but because I knew how quickly she could turn my anger into evidence that I was unstable.
This time, I didn't lower my eyes.
"I didn't sign that paper.""
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
"I believe you.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Michael, listen to yourself. You're accusing your wife of forging a document based on one emotional outburst from your daughter.""
"Then we'll have the signatures examined.""
Her expression changed.
"That's unnecessary.""
"Why?""
"Because this is a private family matter.""
Michael shook his head.
"Forgery isn't a private family matter.""
For several seconds, the only sound was the television playing in the next room.
Then Vanessa walked toward the living room.
"I'm not doing this tonight.""
Michael followed her with his eyes.
"You're not going anywhere until you explain what you signed.""
She stopped.
"I didn't sign anything.""
"Then why are you afraid of an examination?""
Vanessa turned toward me.
"You have no idea what your father and I have sacrificed to keep this family together.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Keep this family together? You just locked me outside.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"Because you refuse to follow simple rules.""
"What rules?""
"Respecting the people who pay the bills.""
My father stepped between us.
"Emily is not discussing her living arrangements with you tonight.""
Vanessa's face flushed.
"Then perhaps you should start discussing the money she has been living on.""
Michael stared at her.
"What money?""
She looked away.
That was when I noticed another envelope on the kitchen counter.
It was cream-colored, with the name of a law firm printed across the top.
I recognized the firm's name because I'd seen it on the paperwork Vanessa had once asked me to sign.
"What's that?"" I asked.
Vanessa moved quickly.
"Nothing.""
She grabbed the envelope.
But my father reached it first.
"Michael, don't.""
He pulled out the contents.
There were bank statements, copies of financial transfers, and a letter from an attorney.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His face gradually lost its color.
"Vanessa.""
She closed her eyes.
"Please don't do this.""
He looked up.
"Where did the money go?""
I stepped closer.
"What money?""
Michael placed the documents on the counter.
The first statement showed a series of withdrawals from an account associated with my mother's trust.
The amounts were different.
Some were small.
Others were tens of thousands of dollars.
My hands began to shake.
"That's my mother's money?""
Michael nodded slowly.
"Some of it.""
I counted the transactions.
There were eight.
The total was more than I had ever imagined.
"How much?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he whispered, "Two hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars.""
The kitchen seemed to tilt.
"That's impossible.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"It was used for legitimate family expenses.""
"Which expenses?"" Michael demanded.
"Household expenses. Investments. Repairs. Things that benefited everyone.""
"Why was the money transferred into an account under your name?""
She looked toward me.
"Because Emily wasn't capable of managing it herself.""
I felt something break inside me.
"You told me my mother's trust was untouched.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"You were too young to understand financial decisions.""
"I'm twenty-five now.""
"And still behaving like a child.""
My father slammed his palm against the counter.
"Stop insulting her!""
Vanessa stared at him.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely uncertain about what to do next.
Michael picked up the attorney's letter.
"There's another problem.""
He looked at me.
"The property transfer agreement wasn't the only document filed three months ago.""
He turned to Vanessa.
"Why did you submit a power of attorney bearing Emily's signature?""
My stomach dropped.
"A power of attorney?""
Michael nodded.
"According to this, you authorized Vanessa to manage your financial affairs.""
I shook my head.
"I never gave her permission.""
Vanessa finally lost her composure.
"Because someone had to do it! Your father was always working, and you were making irresponsible decisions!""
"What decisions?""
"You wanted to withdraw money.""
"Because I was trying to pay for graduate school!""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Exactly. More money wasted on your little plans.""
Michael stared at her.
"You're telling me you took control of her accounts because she wanted to use her own money for education?""
Vanessa said nothing.
I remembered the day I'd asked her about the trust.
I'd been sitting at the kitchen table with a university brochure. She'd poured herself coffee and told me the money was complicated.
She'd promised to speak to the financial adviser.
Then she'd told me I wasn't mature enough to handle it.
I'd believed her.
I'd believed the woman who had spent years telling me she was protecting my future.
My phone vibrated.
I glanced down.
The same unknown number had sent another message.
Don't let her convince your father this was an innocent paperwork mistake. Ask him to check the security camera footage from September 14.
I frowned.
September 14.
That was the day Vanessa had asked me to meet her at the law office.
She'd said my father needed a document signed urgently.
I'd gone.
But when I arrived, she told me the attorney had rescheduled and sent me home.
I showed the message to Michael.
His eyes narrowed.
"September 14?""
He looked at Vanessa.
"Where were you that afternoon?""
She stared at the screen.
"Who is sending you these messages?""
"I don't know," I replied.
Michael took my phone.
"Whoever it is knows something.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
Michael stepped toward the doorway.
"No.""
"Move.""
"Not until we understand what's happening.""
She laughed, but there was no confidence in it.
"You can't keep me here.""
"I'm not trying to keep you here. I'm asking you to explain why you used my daughter's identity to gain access to her money.""
Vanessa looked at him.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Because you gave me permission.""
My father froze.
"What?""
"You signed the documents, Michael. You approved the restructuring. You told me to handle everything.""
"I never approved a power of attorney in Emily's name.""
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
"Then perhaps you should check the second signature.""
She pulled out a folded sheet and placed it on the counter.
Michael unfolded it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he sat down.
I had never seen my father look so frightened.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He didn't respond.
I picked up the paper.
It was a notarized authorization form.
My name appeared at the bottom.
But this time, there was another signature.
Michael Carter.
My father's signature.
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
I authorize Vanessa Carter to act on behalf of Emily Rose Carter in all matters relating to the Carter Family Trust.
I looked at him.
"Dad?""
He shook his head.
"I don't remember signing this.""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Well, someone did.""
My father looked at the date.
Then he looked at me.
And I realized there was something he wasn't telling me.
Something much bigger than the money.
"Emily," he said slowly, "do you remember the week I was hospitalized three months ago?""
I nodded.
He'd suffered a severe reaction to medication during a business trip. He'd spent two nights under observation.
Michael looked at the document again.
"This was signed while I was in the hospital.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
My father reached for his phone.
"I'm calling the attorney.""
She suddenly shouted.
"Don't you dare!""
Michael looked up.
"Why?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Because if you call him, he'll tell you who was really behind the transfers.""
The room went silent.
Michael lowered his phone.
"Who?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Your mother.""
