Chapter 4: The House That Belonged to Me

For several seconds, Dad didn't say anything.

He stood in the middle of my bedroom, holding the phone against his ear, while the attorney's words seemed to settle over us like dust after an explosion.

My mother had transferred her ownership interest in the house to me.

Vanessa had known something was hidden.

And she'd put me in the garage anyway.

“Mr. Brooks,” Dad finally said, “I need you to explain this from the beginning.””

“Of course. But before I do, I need you to understand something important. The deed and trust documents are legally distinct from your current marital arrangements. We need to review the originals before drawing conclusions about the full ownership structure.””

“Then send them to me.””

“I will. There's one more matter. Your wife attempted to obtain money from Emily's trust by submitting a document that appears to contain a forged signature. I retained a copy.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Send that, too.””

“I will. And Michael?””

“Yes?””

“Do not let anyone remove documents, destroy records, or pressure Emily into signing anything until we've reviewed the situation.””

Dad glanced at me.

“I understand.””

When the call ended, I sank onto the edge of the bed.

“Does this mean Vanessa has to leave?””

Dad sat beside me.

“It means we need to find out exactly what your mother arranged and what Vanessa has done. I won't promise you something before I understand the law.””

I looked down at the brass key in my palm.

“Mom knew this might happen, didn't she?””

Dad's eyes grew wet.

“I think your mother knew that people sometimes behave differently when money is involved. She wanted you protected.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn't you tell me about the house?””

“Because I didn't know about the trust. Your mother handled certain estate matters privately with her attorney. I knew she had prepared a will, but I thought the house had passed to me when she died.””

He looked around the room.

“I should have checked every document myself.””

Before I could answer, footsteps thundered up the stairs.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway, followed by Brittany, who clutched her phone in one hand.

“You're not going to a bank,” Vanessa announced.

“You're not dragging Emily into some ridiculous investigation, and you're not allowing a dead woman's paperwork to tear this family apart.””

Dad stood.

“Daniel Brooks is sending me the documents.””

Vanessa's face went white.

“You called Daniel?””

“He called me.””

“Then tell him to stay out of our marriage!””

“He's my daughter's attorney.””

“He was your wife's attorney!””

“And now he's explaining what my daughter owns.””

Vanessa glanced at me.

For a moment, her expression became pleading.

“Emily, sweetheart, you don't understand what you're doing. Your father and I have built a life together. If you start making accusations, you could destroy everything.””

I looked at the doorway where she'd once stood with my mattress.

“You made me sleep beside the washing machine.””

“That was one bad night!””

“You took my phone.””

“Because you were being disrespectful!””

“You threatened me about money.””

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“You have no idea how difficult it is to raise someone else's child.””

Dad stepped between us.

“That's enough.””

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

She turned to him, tears gathering in her eyes.

“Michael, I have given this family everything. I supported you when you were traveling constantly. I took care of Brittany.

I managed the house. And now you're treating me like a criminal because your daughter found an old letter?””

“I'm treating you like someone who put my child in danger.””

“I didn't put her in danger!””

“You locked her in an unheated garage in November.””

“I knew she'd be fine!””

Dad's voice rose.

“You didn't know anything. You didn't even check on her.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then shut it.

Brittany stepped forward.

“Dad, Mom said Emily was only staying there until you came home.””

“Did you see her sleeping there?””

Brittany's gaze dropped.

“Yes.””

“Did you bring her a blanket?””

“No.””

“Did you ask if she was cold?””

She shook her head.

Dad exhaled slowly.

“Then I suggest you think very carefully before telling me what your mother said.””

Brittany began crying.

“I didn't know it was going to be this serious!””

I watched her wipe her cheeks with the sleeve of her expensive sweater.

A few hours earlier, she'd been laughing while carrying my mother's belongings into my room.

Now she looked terrified that the consequences had finally arrived.

Vanessa grabbed Brittany's arm.

“We're leaving.””

Dad moved toward the door.

“Where are you going?””

“Somewhere we can talk without you interrogating us.””

“You can go to the guest room. Neither of you is removing anything from this house until Daniel advises us on the legal situation.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You cannot control me.””

“No. But I can ask you not to destroy evidence or interfere with my daughter.””

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then Vanessa leaned toward him and whispered something I couldn't hear.

Dad's expression changed.

“What did you say?””

She straightened.

“Nothing.””

“No. You said something about the insurance money.””

Her eyes widened.

I looked between them.

“What insurance money?””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“Your father is confused. He's been working too much, and this whole situation is making him irrational.””

Dad reached for his phone.

“I'm calling Daniel back.””

“Michael, don't!””

He stopped.

It was the first time I'd ever heard Vanessa sound genuinely desperate.

Dad studied her.

“Tell me what happened to your mother's life insurance money.””

Vanessa's mouth trembled.

“I used some of it to pay the mortgage.””

“Which account?””

“I don't remember.””

“You managed the finances. You remember.””

“I said I don't remember!””

Brittany began crying harder.

“Mom, just tell him!””

Vanessa spun toward her.

“Stay out of this!””

Brittany flinched.

And suddenly I understood something I'd never noticed before.

Vanessa's anger wasn't only about the bedroom.

It wasn't only about my mother's possessions.

She was afraid of losing control over a story she'd spent years telling everyone.

A story in which she was the responsible wife, the hardworking stepmother, and the woman who had rescued a grieving family from financial ruin.

Dad walked toward the door.

“Emily, get your coat. We're going to Daniel's office.””

Vanessa blocked the doorway.

“You are not taking her anywhere.””

Dad stopped inches from her.

“Move.””

“Michael, if you leave with her, don't bother coming back.””

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said, “I think you should be more worried about what happens when we return.””

Vanessa stepped aside.

I grabbed my coat and followed Dad downstairs.

As we passed the kitchen, I noticed something on the counter.

A large envelope sat beside Vanessa's purse.

My name was printed on it.

Beneath it were the words:

*PROPERTY TRANSFER — FINAL AUTHORIZATION.*

I stopped.

“Dad.””

He followed my gaze.

Neither of us touched the envelope.

But when Dad leaned closer, he noticed the date printed at the top.

It was dated three days earlier.

And the signature line already bore my name.

Except I'd never signed it.

Dad took a photograph of the envelope, then called Daniel again.

When the attorney answered, Dad described what we'd found.

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel said, “Michael, listen carefully. Do not let Emily sign anything. That document may be the missing piece we've been looking for.””

“What do you mean?””

“I mean Vanessa may not have been trying to take Emily's bedroom.””

May you like

Daniel paused.

“She may have been trying to take the entire house.””
