Chapter 2: The Recording My Father Was Never Supposed to See

I woke to the sound of the garage door rattling.

For one terrified second, I thought Vanessa had come back to throw away the mattress, too.

Instead, I heard footsteps outside.

Then a voice.

“Emily?””

I sat up so quickly that the blanket slipped to the floor.

It was Dad.

I scrambled toward the interior door and pounded on it with both hands.

“Dad! I'm here!””

The lock turned.

Michael Carter stood in the doorway wearing yesterday's blue shirt, his face pale and his hair disheveled. A black travel bag hung from one shoulder.

He looked at the mattress.

The washing machine.

The bare concrete floor.

Then he looked at me.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

That was all he said before dropping his bag and pulling me into his arms.

I hadn't cried when Vanessa took my room. I hadn't cried when Brittany wore Mom's robe. I'd even managed to swallow my tears when the garage door locked.

But the moment Dad wrapped his arms around me, everything I'd been holding back came pouring out.

“I'm sorry,” I sobbed into his shirt.

He pulled away just enough to look at me.

“Sorry for what?””

“For making Vanessa mad. I tried to be good. I didn't say anything to Brittany, and I didn't—”

“Stop.”” His voice broke.

“You have nothing to apologize for.””

He took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

“Why didn't you call me?””

“She took my phone.””

His expression changed.

“She did what?””

I nodded.

“She said you had enough problems without my drama.””

Dad closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, the warmth was still there, but something colder had settled behind it.

“Where is she?””

“In the kitchen, I think.””

He glanced toward the ceiling, as if he could see through the house.

Then he crouched in front of me.

“Emily, I need you to tell me exactly what happened. Not what you think I want to hear. Not what will keep anyone from getting upset. Just the truth.””

I wiped my nose with the sleeve of my sweatshirt.

“She said Brittany needed a bigger room. She moved my mattress here and took my phone. She said if I complained, she'd tell you I stole money.””

“Did you?””

“No!””

“I know.”” He squeezed my hands.

“I know you didn't.””

He stood, picked up his travel bag, and guided me toward the house.

I hesitated at the threshold.

“Dad?””

He turned.

“Is Vanessa going to be angry?””

His face crumpled for a fraction of a second.

Then he knelt again.

“Whatever Vanessa feels about this, it is not your responsibility. You're my daughter. You should never have had to ask permission to be safe in your own home.””

I followed him inside.

The kitchen lights were on. A coffee maker hummed on the counter, and a stack of paint samples lay beside a catalog filled with bedroom furniture.

Vanessa sat at the island wearing a cream-colored robe, scrolling through her phone. Brittany was beside her, eating cereal from a large ceramic bowl.

Neither had heard us enter.

Vanessa looked up first.

Her smile appeared automatically.

“Michael! You're home early.””

She rose and crossed the kitchen, reaching to kiss his cheek.

He stepped aside.

Her hand stopped in midair.

“What is wrong with you?””

Michael placed his travel bag on the floor.

“That's what I'd like to ask you.””

Brittany looked between them.

“Dad, why are you being weird?””

Michael ignored her.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

“Why was Emily sleeping in the garage?””

Vanessa blinked.

Then she laughed.

“Oh, for heaven's sake. She told you that?””

“I saw it.””

The color drained from her face.

“What?””

“I saw her on the security camera. I watched you move her mattress. I watched you take her phone. I watched you lock her in there.””

Brittany's spoon slipped from her fingers and clattered against the bowl.

Vanessa recovered quickly.

“Michael, you're misunderstanding what happened. Emily was being disrespectful, and I needed to teach her that there are consequences.””

“Consequences for what?””

“She screamed at Brittany!””

“I didn't scream,” I whispered.

Vanessa swung toward me.

“Don't interrupt adults.””

Michael stepped between us.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Vanessa stared at him as if he'd slapped her.

“I am her stepmother. I am responsible for maintaining order in this house.””

“You are responsible for treating my child like a human being.””

“Your child?”” Vanessa repeated, her voice rising.

“She's sixteen, Michael. She's old enough to understand that families have to make sacrifices. Brittany has outgrown her room, and Emily doesn't need all that space.””

“Then why didn't you discuss it with me?””

“Because you are never here!””

The words rang through the kitchen.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Vanessa's breathing grew shallow. She pressed her palms against the countertop, her fingernails whitening.

“You leave me alone to manage everything,” she continued.

“The house, the bills, the girls. You work in Dallas, you travel constantly, and then you come home expecting me to keep everything exactly the way your first wife left it.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“This is not about the curtains, Vanessa.””

“No? Then why does everything have to revolve around her?””

Her gaze flicked toward me.

“Every photograph. Every piece of furniture. Every time I try to make this house ours, Emily acts as though I'm desecrating a grave.””

I felt my stomach twist.

Dad's voice lowered.

“Did you put my daughter in an unheated garage because you were jealous of a dead woman?””

Vanessa slapped her palm against the counter.

“Don't you dare call me jealous!””

Brittany jumped up.

“Mom was just trying to help me! Emily doesn't even use half the stuff in that room!””

Michael turned toward her.

“Brittany, did you know Emily was going to sleep in the garage?””

She crossed her arms.

“Mom said it was temporary.””

“Did you see her out there last night?””

Brittany hesitated.

“Yes.””

“And you left her there?””

Her chin lifted.

“It's not my fault she doesn't know how to share.””

Dad stared at her for a long moment.

Then he said, “Go upstairs.””

“But—”

“Now.””

Brittany grabbed her bowl and hurried away, her bare feet slapping against the stairs.

Vanessa waited until she disappeared.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Michael, we can talk about this privately. Emily is emotional, and she tends to exaggerate when she doesn't get her way.””

Dad reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“Would you like to hear what you said to her at midnight?””

Vanessa went completely still.

He tapped the screen.

Her own voice filled the kitchen.

Maybe you'll learn to appreciate what this family gives you.

Then came the sound of the lock clicking.

A few seconds later, another recording began.

Vanessa's voice was clearer this time.

Emily, wake up. We need to talk about what happens if your father finds out.

My heart began pounding.

I hadn't heard that part before.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“What happens if I find out?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

He played the rest of the recording.

On the screen, Vanessa stood over my mattress, holding a folder. She glanced toward the camera, unaware it was recording her voice.

“Listen carefully,” the recording said.

“If Michael asks, you chose to sleep out here. You told me you wanted to be left alone. If you contradict me, I'll make sure he knows about the money.””

Then her voice dropped even lower.

“And if you tell him what I did with your mother's things, you'll regret it.””

The recording ended.

My father stared at the phone.

I stared at Vanessa.

For the first time since she had married my dad, she looked genuinely frightened.

Michael slowly raised his eyes.

“What money?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“That recording is taken out of context.””

“What money, Vanessa?””

She backed away from the counter.

“Emily has been taking cash from my purse. I was trying to protect the family from a bigger problem.””

I shook my head.

“I haven't taken anything.””

“Enough!”” Dad snapped.

The sudden sound made me flinch.

He noticed immediately and softened his voice.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart. Not at you.””

Then he faced Vanessa again.

“You have until I finish this coffee to explain what money you're talking about.””

Vanessa looked at the clock.

Then at the stairs.

Then at the front door.

She seemed to realize that every escape route had disappeared.

Finally, she whispered, “Ask your daughter what she found in her mother's closet.””

I froze.

Dad turned toward me.

“What did you find, Emily?””

My throat went dry.

Three weeks earlier, I'd discovered a small envelope tucked inside the lining of Mom's old jewelry box. I hadn't opened it because my name was written across the front in Mom's handwriting.

I had hidden it beneath a loose floorboard in my bedroom, afraid Vanessa would throw it away if she found it.

Now I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to take my room.

She hadn't wanted more space for Brittany.

May you like

She'd been searching for something.

And whatever it was, she was terrified that my father would discover it.
