Chapter 8: The Documents Under My Bed
The room went silent after Mia’s confession.
Not the uncomfortable silence from before.
Something heavier.
The kind of silence that comes when everyone realizes the truth is about to become impossible to hide.
My father looked at Mia.
“Documents?””
Mia nodded slowly.
Her eyes were full of fear.
“I found them three days ago.””
Karen immediately turned toward her.
“Mia.””
Just her name.
Nothing else.
But the warning in her voice was obvious.
Mia flinched.
For years, I had seen Mia act fearless.
She could insult me without blinking.
She could destroy something I loved and call it honesty.
But now?
She looked like a child who had finally realized she had been standing beside the wrong person.
My father noticed too.
“Mia.””
His voice softened.
“You need to tell me everything.””
Mia looked at Karen.
Then at me.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
I swallowed.
“What documents?””
She took a shaky breath.
“They were hidden under the loose floorboard in your room.””
My stomach dropped.
“My room?””
She nodded.
“When I went in there to take the dress…”
She stopped.
Her face changed.
Like she was remembering the moment.
“I saw the floorboard wasn’t completely closed. Something was sticking out.””
My father looked at her.
“And you took them?””
“No.””
Mia shook her head.
“I was going to.””
Everyone stared.
She looked ashamed.
“I thought maybe there was something valuable.””
A bitter laugh escaped her.
“I was still angry. I still wanted something to use against you.””
I looked at her.
At least she was finally telling the truth.
“But then I saw the names.””
My father frowned.
“What names?””
Mia looked at me.
“Yours.””
The room felt colder.
“What did they say?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t understand everything. They were legal papers.””
She paused.
“But I saw the words ‘guardianship’ and ‘inheritance.’”
My father’s expression changed.
Karen’s face became completely still.
That reaction told us everything.
My father turned toward her.
“What did you do?””
Karen shook her head.
“Nothing.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
Karen looked away.
My father walked toward Mia.
“Where are the documents?””
Mia hesitated.
“I hid them.””
“Where?””
She swallowed.
“In my closet.””
Nobody spoke.
My father walked past her.
Straight toward her room.
Karen followed.
“David, wait.””
He stopped.
But he didn’t turn around.
“What?””
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
He slowly looked back.
“No.””
His eyes were cold.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Mia’s room looked exactly like I expected.
Perfect.
Expensive.
Organized.
The room of someone who had always been given everything.
My father opened the closet.
He searched through boxes, bags, and drawers.
Mia stood in the doorway.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody expected those words.
Especially not from her.
My father stopped.
Mia looked at me.
“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””
No.
It didn’t.
But it was the first honest thing she had said to me in years.
“I was jealous of you.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought you were the reason Dad didn’t love me enough.””
My father looked at her.
“Mia…”
She shook her head.
“No. Let me say it.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I hated you for things that weren’t your fault.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because part of me wanted to forgive her.
And part of me remembered the scissors.
The ruined dress.
The way she smiled.
So I stayed silent.
My father found a small black folder behind a stack of shoes.
He picked it up.
Karen immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Everyone turned.
My father opened the folder.
Inside were papers.
Lots of them.
He started reading.
The first few pages were financial documents.
Then his expression changed.
“What is this?””
Karen said nothing.
My father looked at her.
“What is this?””
She sat down.
“I can explain.””
“That’s not an explanation.””
He held up the papers.
“These are documents transferring control of Lily’s trust fund.””
My heart stopped.
“My what?””
Nobody answered.
My father looked at me.
“Your mother left money for you.””
I stared.
“What?””
He nodded slowly.
“Your mother had a life insurance policy and savings account.””
I looked at Karen.
“Did you know?””
Karen looked down.
“Yes.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“How much?””
Karen didn’t answer.
“How much?””
She whispered:
“Enough.””
The word made my stomach twist.
My father looked back at the papers.
“She was trying to become your financial guardian?””
Karen’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No.””
His voice was sharp.
“You were trying to control it.””
Karen stood.
“You think I’m a monster.””
Nobody responded.
Because her actions were speaking.
“I raised her.””
She pointed at me.
“I cooked for her. I drove her places. I helped with school.””
I stared at her.
“And I appreciate the things you did.””
She looked surprised.
“But that doesn’t give you the right to take things that belonged to me.””
Karen’s face hardened.
“You think you know everything.””
“No.””
I looked at the documents.
“But I know enough.””
My father continued reading.
Then he found something else.
A signature.
His face went pale.
“Karen.””
She stopped.
“What?””
He held up the paper.
“Did you forge my signature?””
The room froze.
Mia gasped.
“No.””
Karen’s eyes widened.
“I didn’t.””
My father looked at the signature.
Then at her.
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
“Then explain why my name is here.””
Karen had no answer.
For the first time, she looked completely trapped.
My father put the documents down.
“This is not just about secrets anymore.””
Karen started crying.
“David, please.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“I defended you.””
His voice cracked.
“I defended you when Lily told me she felt like you didn’t want her here.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at him.
“When did I say that?””
He looked at me sadly.
“You didn’t.””
A pause.
“But I knew.””
That hurt.
Because he knew.
He had known I was hurting.
And he still didn’t see how deep it went.
My father looked at Karen.
“I thought time would fix things.””
Karen whispered:
“I loved you.””
He shook his head.
“Maybe you did.””
The words were painful.
“But love without honesty destroys people.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Mia suddenly grabbed her phone.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I just remembered something.””
She opened her phone.
“I took a picture of the documents before I hid them.””
My father walked toward her.
“Show me.””
She handed him the phone.
He looked through the pictures.
Then stopped.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He zoomed in.
His face changed.
“What?””
I took the phone.
And saw the last document.
It wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about guardianship.
It was a letter.
Signed by my mother.
But the date was impossible.
Because it was written after she had supposedly lost consciousness in the hospital.
My hands started shaking.
My mother had written something after the night everyone said she could no longer speak.
I looked at Rachel.
“You knew about this?””
Rachel looked shocked.
“No.””
My father stared at the document.
Then at Karen.
“Where did this come from?””
Karen didn’t answer.
Mia whispered:
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at me.
“The reason I destroyed your dress…”
Her voice broke.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
She swallowed.
“Because Karen told me if I didn’t…”
She looked terrified.
“She would reveal something about my past.””
My father stepped forward.
“What did she threaten you with?””
Mia looked at Karen.
Then whispered:
“She said she had proof that I wasn’t really her daughter.””
The room went completely silent.
Karen closed her eyes.
And my father finally understood.
The secrets weren’t separate.
The dress.
The documents.
The lies.
They were all connected.
Someone had been controlling both of us.
Me and Mia.
For years.
Then my father looked at the final page of the document.
His expression changed.
“Lily.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He handed me the paper.
At the bottom was one sentence.
A sentence written in my mother’s handwriting.
*If Karen is ever exposed, find the person who helped her hide the truth.*
Below it was a name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made Mark step backward.
May you like
Because it was someone he knew.
Someone who had been part of our family all along.
