Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything
My mother’s voice filled the room.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years except through old memories.
A voice I had almost forgotten the exact sound of.
But now it was coming from a small computer speaker, carrying a warning she had recorded before she died.
“Because the person who hurt me is the same person who has been raising my daughter.””
Nobody moved.
The video froze for a moment.
Then my mother appeared on the screen.
She looked tired.
Not sick.
Not broken.
Just tired.
She sat at a kitchen table I recognized from old family pictures. There was a cup beside her, a stack of papers, and an expression on her face that made my chest ache.
She looked scared.
My mother.
The woman who always smiled in every photograph.
The woman everyone described as strong.
She was scared.
“David,” she continued, “if you’re watching this, I need you to listen carefully.””
My father grabbed the edge of the table.
His eyes never left the screen.
“I don’t know if I’ll have the chance to tell you this myself.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
I wiped it away quickly.
I didn’t want to miss a second.
“First, I need you to know that Lily is yours. Maybe not by blood, but by every promise you ever made to her.””
My father closed his eyes.
A broken breath escaped him.
My mother continued.
“You were the only person who stayed when things became difficult. You were the only person who loved her without asking what she could give you.””
I looked at my father.
He looked down.
I had never seen him cry before.
Not once.
But he was crying now.
Quietly.
Like he had been holding those tears for years.
The video continued.
“But David, there is something I need you to know about Karen.””
Karen immediately stood.
“That’s enough.””
Everyone turned.
My father slowly looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“Sit down.””
Karen stared at him.
For the first time, she looked like she didn’t recognize him.
“You’re going to believe a dead woman over me?””
My father’s expression didn’t change.
“I’m going to listen to my wife.””
The words hit the room.
Karen’s face fell.
My mother’s voice continued.
“Karen was not always honest with us.””
The video showed my mother looking down at the papers in front of her.
“She knew about Lily’s biological father before David did.””
Mark looked away.
My father glanced at him.
“You knew too.””
Mark nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
Mark looked ashamed.
“I tried.””
My father turned sharply.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Mark sighed.
“Karen threatened to make sure I never saw Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Everyone looked at me.
Mark looked devastated.
“I wanted to be part of your life.””
I stared at him.
“Then why weren’t you?””
He looked down.
“Because Karen convinced me that staying away was better.””
My father’s hands tightened.
“What did she say?””
Mark swallowed.
“She told me David hated me. She told me Lily already had a father and that if I appeared, I would only hurt her.””
I looked at Karen.
She didn’t deny it.
That scared me.
Because denial would have been easier.
My mother’s voice continued.
“But that is not the worst part.””
The room went silent again.
My father looked at the screen.
“What else?””
My mother paused.
Then said:
“Karen changed the hospital records.””
My heart stopped.
“What records?””
Nobody answered.
The video continued.
“When Lily was born, there was confusion because of the circumstances surrounding her birth. Karen had access to the paperwork.””
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“She changed the information.””
My father stood suddenly.
“What?””
Karen stepped forward.
“David, listen to me.””
He ignored her.
“What did she change?””
My mother answered.
“She changed the name of Lily’s biological father on the documents.””
I felt dizzy.
The room blurred.
“What?””
Rachel reached for the chair beside me.
I sat down.
My mother’s voice continued.
“I found out months later.””
My father stared at Karen.
“You changed legal documents?””
Karen shook her head.
“No.””
My mother’s voice played again.
“She told me it was for Lily’s protection.””
Karen whispered:
“It was.””
Everyone looked at her.
“It was complicated.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
Karen’s eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
He pointed at the screen.
“I don’t understand why my entire marriage has been built on secrets.””
The video continued.
“But when I confronted Karen, she made a choice.””
My mother’s face became sad.
“She chose to protect herself.””
Karen’s breathing became uneven.
My father looked at her.
“What happened?””
Karen said nothing.
My mother answered for her.
“She threatened to take Lily away.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
My mother.
My real mother.
Had known.
She had been fighting to protect me.
My father looked at Karen.
“Did you?””
Karen’s eyes filled with tears.
“David…”
“Did you threaten her?””
Karen looked away.
That was enough.
My father stepped back.
I had never seen disappointment look so painful.
It wasn’t rage.
It wasn’t hatred.
It was the look of someone realizing they had loved the wrong person.
The video continued.
“I didn’t tell David everything because I was afraid.””
My mother’s voice softened.
“I was afraid Karen would hurt Lily.””
I covered my mouth.
My mother had been afraid.
And she was right.
Because years later, Karen was still hurting me.
Not physically.
But emotionally.
Every comment.
Every comparison.
Every moment she made me feel like I didn’t belong.
My mother knew.
She had seen it coming.
Then the video reached the final part.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“David, if Lily is watching this too…”
I froze.
“She needs to know something.””
My father looked at me.
My eyes stayed on the screen.
“Lily, my beautiful girl…”
I broke.
Hearing my mother say my name after all these years was too much.
“You were never the reason people left.””
Tears streamed down my face.
“You were never difficult to love.””
I covered my mouth.
“You were never a burden.””
My father reached for my hand.
I held on.
“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””
The video paused.
My mother smiled sadly.
“And if anyone ever makes you feel like you don’t belong…”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Remember that you were chosen.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Not for a long time.
Then Karen whispered:
“She hated me.””
Rachel looked at her.
“No.””
Karen looked up.
“She always thought I was evil.””
Rachel shook her head.
“She thought you were dangerous.””
The difference was clear.
And Karen knew it.
My father slowly turned toward her.
“I need to ask you one question.””
Karen wiped her face.
“What?””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
She stared.
“Why did you do all of this?””
For several seconds, Karen said nothing.
Then something changed.
The sadness disappeared.
The fear disappeared.
What replaced it was anger.
“You want to know why?””
Her voice became sharper.
“Because I was tired of being second.””
Everyone froze.
Karen laughed bitterly.
“Do you know what it was like living in this house?””
My father frowned.
“You had everything.””
“No.””
She pointed at me.
“She had everything.””
I stepped back.
Karen continued.
“Lily had your attention. Your love. Your memories with her mother. Everything.””
My father shook his head.
“That was never taken from you.””
“Yes, it was.””
Her eyes burned.
“Because she was always the reminder that I would never be enough.””
I stared at her.
All this time.
All these years.
She had blamed me for a wound she refused to heal.
Then Karen said something that made my blood run cold.
“But destroying a dress was never my plan.””
The room went silent.
My father frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Karen smiled faintly.
A smile without warmth.
“You all think today was about graduation.””
She looked at me.
“It wasn’t.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?””
Karen looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
“The dress was just the beginning.””
Nobody moved.
My father stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Karen didn’t answer.
Instead, she said the one thing that made Mia suddenly look terrified.
“Ask Mia what she found before she destroyed the dress.””
Everyone turned.
Mia’s face went pale.
I stared at her.
“Mia?””
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
My father’s voice hardened.
“What did you find?””
Mia’s lips trembled.
“I…”
She looked at me.
Then at Karen.
Then whispered:
“The dress wasn’t the only thing hidden in your room.””
My heart stopped.
“What else?””
Mia took a shaky breath.
May you like
And finally said:
“I found the documents that prove Karen was planning to take everything from you.””
