Chapter 7: The Dead Man Who Owned My Son's Company

Martin's warning followed me all the way home.

By the time Emma and I reached my driveway, the afternoon sun had disappeared behind a wall of gray clouds. The house looked exactly as it had for forty-six years: white shutters, a crooked mailbox, and the old maple tree my wife had planted when Ethan was born.

Yet I no longer looked at it the same way.

Every window seemed vulnerable.

Every locked door felt temporary.

And every family photograph inside reminded me that the people trying to take everything from me were the same people I had once trusted with my life.

Emma parked the car and turned toward me.

"Dad, you're not staying alone tonight.""

"I'm not alone. You're here.""

"You know what I mean.""

I looked at the front door.

"Then let's go inside and see what your brother found.""

We had barely entered the living room when Martin called.

"Richard, I've reviewed the information Ethan sent us. There's a serious problem with Hale Property Consulting.""

I sat down.

"The dead man?""

"His name was Victor Lang. He died three years ago, but the company was registered under his identity six months ago.""

Emma stared at me.

"How can a dead man register a company?""

"Someone may have used his personal information without authorization," Martin replied.

"We need the official records to determine how it happened.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Who was Victor Lang?""

Martin paused.

"That's what I'm trying to establish. The registration lists a business address connected to a commercial property in the next county. I'm sending the details to my investigator.""

I thanked him and ended the call.

Emma pulled a chair beside mine.

"Do you think Sophia knew the identity was stolen?""

"I think we need to stop guessing.""

She nodded, then opened the photographs Ethan had sent.

The blue folder contained twenty-three pages.

Some were bank forms. Others were draft property transfers, medical statements, and handwritten notes. The final pages contained a list of dates, names, and amounts.

Emma enlarged one photograph.

"Dad, look at this.""

A spreadsheet listed three payments made over six weeks.

$10,000.

$15,000.

$25,000.

Beside each amount was a short description.

*Medical assessment.*

*Document preparation.*

*Transfer processing.*

The payments totaled fifty thousand dollars.

At the bottom was a note in Sophia's handwriting.

*Final release after guardianship approval.*

I stared at the words.

"They've been paying people to make this happen.""

"Or trying to," Emma said.

"We need to know who received the money.""

She sent the images to Martin through the secure channel he had provided. Then she opened another photograph.

This one showed a page with a list of people Sophia intended to contact after the hearing.

Linda Brooks was there.

So was Dr. Whitmore.

But a third name caught my attention.

*Daniel Mercer — Trust Administration.*

I recognized it immediately.

Daniel had been the financial adviser who helped me establish my retirement portfolio almost fifteen years earlier. He had retired several years ago, but he had remained a trusted friend. We exchanged Christmas cards and occasionally spoke over coffee.

"Emma, do you remember Daniel Mercer?""

"Of course. He came to Mom's funeral.""

I pointed to the screen.

"Why would Sophia be contacting him?""

Emma studied the entry.

"Maybe he knows something about the trust.""

I picked up my phone and called Daniel.

He answered after four rings.

"Richard! I was just thinking about you.""

His cheerful tone made the question difficult.

"Daniel, I need to ask you something important.""

"Of course. What's wrong?""

"Have you spoken to my daughter-in-law recently?""

Silence.

It lasted only a second, but I noticed it.

"Why do you ask?""

"Because her documents contain your name.""

Daniel cleared his throat.

"I see.""

"Do you know anything about a company called Hale Property Consulting?""

Another pause.

"Richard, this isn't something we should discuss over the phone.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why not?""

"Because there are matters involving your trust that require careful handling.""

I stood up.

"What matters?""

"I'd rather meet in person.""

"Then meet me at my lawyer's office.""

Daniel sighed.

"That may not be possible.""

"Why?""

"Because I signed a confidentiality agreement.""

I felt the room grow cold.

"With whom?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel, I've known you for fifteen years. If someone is using my name to steal my house, I need to know whether you've helped them.""

His voice dropped.

"I never wanted it to come to this.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Come to what?""

Before he could answer, I heard a woman's voice in the background.

"Daniel, hang up.""

I recognized that voice.

Sophia.

"Daniel?"" I said sharply.

"Is Sophia with you?""

The line went dead.

Emma stared at me.

"She was there?""

I nodded slowly.

My daughter began pacing.

"She's meeting with people connected to your trust while filing false documents against you. Dad, this is bigger than we thought.""

I looked at the photographs again.

The dead man's company.

The mysterious payments.

The financial adviser who suddenly couldn't speak freely.

For the first time, I wondered whether the plan had begun long before Sophia married Ethan.

At six thirty, Martin called again.

His investigator had located the registered business address for Hale Property Consulting. It was a small office suite above a closed insurance agency.

The building's property manager confirmed that someone had rented the office using Victor Lang's identity.

But there was another detail.

The lease payments came from an account associated with Daniel Mercer.

Martin's voice was grave.

"We can't conclude that Daniel knowingly participated in fraud based on that alone. But his connection to the company needs to be investigated.""

I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the dark window.

"Can we speak to him?""

"We've requested a meeting through his attorney. He may agree to provide information, but we shouldn't contact him repeatedly or pressure him.""

"Understood.""

After the call, Emma heated soup. I tried to eat, but every spoonful felt like swallowing sand.

Then a knock sounded at the front door.

Three sharp knocks.

Emma froze.

I rose slowly and looked through the side window.

Ethan stood on the porch, soaked from the rain.

He held a thick envelope against his chest.

I opened the door but left the security chain in place.

"What are you doing here?""

He looked exhausted.

"I need to talk to you.""

"Then talk.""

He glanced past me.

"Can I come in?""

I hesitated.

Emma appeared behind me.

"If you're here to lie again, leave.""

Ethan flinched.

"I'm not.""

I removed the chain.

He entered, dripping rainwater onto the mat, and placed the envelope on the kitchen table.

"I brought the rest of the documents from the blue folder.""

Emma folded her arms.

"How did you get them?""

"Sophia left the folder in her car. I photographed the pages and returned it before she noticed.""

"That's not what I asked," Emma replied.

"How did you get the documents you're carrying?""

Ethan looked at me.

"I made copies before I gave the folder back.""

Martin had advised us not to accept potentially stolen originals, but copies Ethan lawfully possessed and was willing to provide could be preserved through his attorney. I told him we would document everything and let Martin handle it.

Then I asked the question that mattered.

"Who is Victor Lang?""

Ethan sat down.

"He was Sophia's former business partner.""

I stared at him.

"Former?""

"They worked together before she met me. She said he died after a heart attack.""

"Did you know him?""

"Once. I met him at a dinner party about six years ago.""

Emma leaned forward.

"Then why is his identity being used by a company registered last year?""

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know. But I found an email from Sophia to Daniel Mercer. It said they needed to use Victor's records because his estate was complicated and unlikely to be examined closely.""

I felt a chill travel down my back.

"Did the email say Victor was dead?""

"Yes.""

"Then she knew.""

Ethan nodded.

He opened the envelope and removed a printed email chain.

The messages showed Sophia asking Daniel about the requirements for transferring assets held in a trust. Daniel had warned her that any change would require verification and that a court-appointed guardian could not automatically take ownership of the assets.

Sophia's reply was chillingly direct.

*We don't need to own the trust. We only need temporary authority to move the money. Once it reaches Victor's company, the rest can be handled privately.*

Emma read the sentence twice.

"They planned to empty Dad's accounts.""

Ethan's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

I sat down opposite him.

"How long have you known?""

He looked at his hands.

"I saw the email three weeks ago.""

The silence that followed was unbearable.

"You knew three weeks ago," I repeated.

"I thought I could stop it.""

"How?""

"I asked Sophia to abandon the plan. She told me we'd lose everything if we backed out.""

"And you believed her?""

He nodded.

"She showed me the debts. The threats. The money we owed. I panicked.""

I looked at my son.

"You could have come to me.""

"I was ashamed.""

"You were ashamed of asking for help, so you helped someone steal from me?""

He began to cry.

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds exactly like what you did.""

Emma turned away, wiping her eyes.

For a moment, Ethan said nothing.

Then he reached into his pocket and placed one final sheet on the table.

"Dad, there's another name in the email chain.""

I looked down.

The message was addressed to Sophia, Daniel, and a third person.

*Samuel Whitmore.*

Beneath the doctor's name was a note about the guardianship petition.

But the final line was the one that made me stop breathing.

*After the hearing, make sure Richard cannot contact his attorney without our approval.*

I looked up.

"Who wrote this?""

Ethan swallowed.

"Sophia.""

"And Daniel agreed?""

"I don't know.""

I stared at the message.

They hadn't simply planned to take my money.

They had planned to isolate me, convince a court I was incapable, and prevent me from defending myself.

I looked at Ethan.

"Why are you helping me now?""

His voice broke.

"Because yesterday, when I saw you standing in court, I realized what I'd become.""

He wiped his face.

"I kept telling myself I was doing everything for my family. But I was destroying the one person who had never stopped helping me.""

I wanted to believe him.

God help me, I wanted to.

But before I could answer, Emma's phone rang.

It was Martin.

She put him on speaker.

"Martin, Ethan is here. He's brought more evidence.""

"Good. Please don't discuss the documents with anyone else until we arrange to preserve them properly.""

Then his tone changed.

"Richard, there's an urgent development. My investigator has just learned that someone accessed the registry file for Victor Lang's estate this morning.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Who?""

"We don't know yet. But the inquiry was submitted using your personal details.""

Emma went pale.

Ethan stood abruptly.

"No," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"What is it?""

He stared at the document on the table.

Then he said something that turned my blood cold.

"That means Sophia isn't trying to steal the house anymore.""

May you like

He looked directly at me.

"She's trying to make you look like the person behind the entire fraud.""
