Chapter 4: The Doctor Who Sold My Life

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

The man standing beside my open safe was Dr. Samuel Whitmore, the cardiologist who had treated me after my heart surgery two years earlier. I remembered his silver hair, his expensive watches, and the reassuring way he used to tell me that growing old didn't mean surrendering my independence.

Now he was standing in my bedroom with my daughter-in-law, examining documents that could strip me of both.

Emma gripped my arm.

"Dad, that's your doctor.""

"I know.""

"Why would he be helping Sophia?""

I watched the footage as Dr. Whitmore placed another paper on the bed. Sophia leaned over his shoulder, pointing at something near the bottom.

Then he said something that made my stomach turn.

"Once the judge signs the order, Richard won't be able to challenge anything we do.""

Sophia laughed softly.

"And the house?""

"That depends on whether your husband follows instructions.""

"My husband?"" she replied.

"Ethan will do whatever I tell him.""

I closed my eyes.

My son had become a weapon in his wife's hands, but I was beginning to suspect that Sophia was taking orders from someone else, too.

Emma reached for her phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

"Wait.""

She stared at me.

"Dad, they've broken into your safe!""

"I know. But I want to understand what they're after before we do anything that might alert them.""

"Understand what? They're stealing your life!""

Her voice cracked on the final word.

I took her hand.

"Listen to me. We have the footage. We have the forged documents.

And we have Martin. Let's make sure we protect the evidence before anyone knows we've seen it.""

Emma reluctantly lowered her phone.

I called Martin instead.

He arrived twenty minutes later, carrying his briefcase and speaking to his assistant through his car's hands-free system. When he stepped inside, I showed him the footage.

He watched Dr. Whitmore remove documents from my safe, his expression growing darker with every second.

"Richard, I need to be very careful about what I tell you," he said when the recording ended.

"A guardianship petition doesn't automatically give someone control over your property. But if they convince a court that you're incapable of managing your affairs, they could obtain authority to make important decisions on your behalf.""

"Even if I'm perfectly capable?""

"That is precisely why we need to challenge this immediately.""

Emma pointed at the screen.

"Can we prove the doctor lied?""

"Possibly. We need the original medical report, the doctor's records, and evidence of what he actually examined Richard for.""

I sat down heavily.

"Dr. Whitmore operated on my heart. He knows I can manage my own affairs.""

Martin looked directly at me.

"Did you have any recent appointment with him?""

"No. Not in over a year.""

"Then how could he have prepared a current assessment?""

I had no answer.

Martin instructed us to preserve the original video files, document the apparent unauthorized entry, and avoid confronting Sophia or Dr. Whitmore until we had secured the evidence.

Then he made two calls.

The first was to the appropriate court office to determine whether an emergency petition had actually been filed.

The second was to a colleague who handled elder financial abuse cases.

When he finished, he sat across from me.

"The court has received a petition, but no final order has been issued. We have time to respond.""

I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

"How much time?""

"That depends on the hearing schedule. We need to act quickly.""

Emma paced beside the window.

"What about Ethan? Is he part of this?""

Martin hesitated.

"His signature appears on the supporting affidavit. That makes his involvement important, but we still need to establish what he knew and whether the statements he signed were knowingly false.""

I stared at the floor.

"I raised that boy to tell the truth.""

Martin's voice softened.

"People can make terrible choices, Richard. Our job is to establish what happened, not to guess why.""

I understood what he meant.

But understanding didn't make it hurt less.

Before leaving, Martin asked me to review the documents visible in the footage. I enlarged the image of the paper Dr. Whitmore had placed beside the safe.

Most of the text was too small to read.

One line, however, was perfectly clear.

*Proposed temporary guardian: Ethan Hale.*

Beneath it was a second name.

*Financial representative: Sophia Hale.*

Emma covered her mouth.

"They're trying to give Ethan control over Dad's life and Sophia control over his money.""

Martin nodded grimly.

"That's what the petition appears to request.""

I leaned back in my chair.

"Then why does the doctor need to be involved?""

"His medical assessment could be used to support the claim that you cannot manage your own affairs.""

I remembered Dr. Whitmore standing beside my hospital bed, telling me I had been fortunate to survive the operation.

He had held my hand and promised to help me regain my strength.

I had trusted him.

That afternoon, I had finally begun to understand how dangerous misplaced trust could be.

After Martin left, Emma insisted that I stay at her apartment while we worked through the legal process.

I refused.

"This is my home.""

"Dad, they've already entered your bedroom twice. What if they come back?""

"Then they'll find the locks changed and the cameras working.""

"That doesn't mean you're safe.""

I looked around the living room.

My wife's photograph stood on the mantel, beside the little wooden sailboat Ethan had made in school. I could still see the crooked blue paint he'd used on the hull.

I had promised my wife I would never abandon the home we'd built together.

"I'm not leaving," I told Emma.

"Not because I'm stubborn, and not because I want to punish anyone. I'm staying because I won't let them frighten me out of my own life.""

Emma stared at me for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

"All right. But I'm staying here tonight.""

We spent the evening checking the doors, documenting the condition of the safe, and saving every available recording.

At 8:40 p.m., my phone rang.

Ethan.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Then I answered.

"Dad?""

His voice sounded exhausted.

"What do you want, Ethan?""

"I need to see you.""

"We can meet at Martin's office.""

"No. Please. Just you and me.""

I looked at Emma.

She shook her head.

"Ethan, your lawyer can contact Martin. Until then, I have nothing to discuss privately.""

He exhaled sharply.

"You're really going to do this to me?""

The words struck me harder than they should have.

"Do what?""

"Destroy my life over a misunderstanding.""

I closed my eyes.

"You hit me. You signed a statement claiming I'm mentally incompetent. Your wife filed documents with my forged signature. And a doctor I trusted walked into my bedroom with her.""

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered, "You don't know everything.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Then tell me.""

"I can't.""

"Can't, or won't?""

"Dad, please. Just listen to me. Sophia says if I don't cooperate, everything will fall apart.""

"Everything for whom?""

He didn't answer.

I heard a door close on his end of the call.

Then his voice dropped.

"She told me the guardianship would only be temporary. She said we'd protect your money from people who might take advantage of you.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Ethan, stop lying to me.""

"I'm not lying!""

His voice cracked.

For the first time since the slap, I heard something beneath his anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Dad," he whispered, "there's something in Sophia's desk you need to find.""

I sat upright.

"What?""

"A blue folder. She keeps it locked in the bottom drawer. It has all the original papers.""

"Original papers for what?""

He took a shaky breath.

"Everything.""

I glanced at Emma, who had been listening from across the room.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because I saw what she did to you. And because I think she's going to do something worse.""

My heart began to pound.

"What does she plan to do?""

Before he could answer, I heard Sophia's voice in the background.

"Ethan? Who are you talking to?""

He went silent.

"Ethan?"" I repeated.

Then he whispered four words.

"She knows about Emma.""

The call disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Emma came toward me.

"What happened?""

I told her everything.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then her expression changed.

"Dad, what if the blue folder isn't just about the house?""

"What else could it be?""

May you like

She looked toward the front door.

"What if we're not the only people she's planning to take something from?""
