Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Names
The envelope sat on the floor between us.
Nobody touched it.
Not Daniel.
Not Caroline.
Not Thomas.
Not Mara.
It was as if all of us understood the same thing at the exact same moment.
Whatever was inside would change what little certainty we had left.
My father had spent twenty-eight years building a wall of lies.
And now he had thrown one more piece of the truth at my feet.
I stared at the name written across the front.
*ELENA.*
My hands felt numb.
“That’s not my name.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Maybe it was.””
I looked at him.
“You knew about this?””
He shook his head immediately.
“No.””
“Then why does my father keep knowing things before everyone else?””
Nobody answered.
That was the worst part.
Every question led to another locked door.
Daniel crouched down and picked up the envelope.
He turned it over carefully.
“No seal.””
“Meaning?””
“Meaning Dad wanted us to find it.””
Caroline’s expression darkened.
“He always did that.””
I looked at her.
“Did what?””
“Made people think they discovered something themselves.””
She looked at the envelope.
“He liked controlling the moment.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
No photograph.
No documents.
Just a handwritten note.
He read it silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The handwriting wasn’t my mother’s.
It was my father’s.
*You want the truth? Fine. Ask Thomas why he never told you that Elena was your real name.*
I looked up.
“Who is Elena?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Nobody moved.
Then he whispered:
“You.””
The room went silent.
I laughed softly.
“No.””
Thomas looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m not doing this again.””
My voice rose.
“I’m not standing here while everyone reveals another piece of my life like I’m some puzzle.””
Nobody interrupted.
I pointed at the papers.
“You all keep saying my name isn’t my name.””
I looked at Thomas.
“You say you’re my father.””
At Caroline.
“You say you’re my sister.””
At Mara.
“You knew my mother’s secrets.””
Then I looked toward the door where Richard had disappeared.
“And he spent my entire life making me doubt myself.””
My voice broke.
“So someone tell me one thing that is actually mine.””
Silence.
Then Caroline walked toward me.
Slowly.
She stopped in front of me.
“My name is Caroline Morgan.””
I looked at her.
“Okay.””
“My whole life, I hated that name.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because it was the name he gave me.””
She touched her chest.
“He wanted me to remember that I was the daughter he rejected.””
Her eyes filled.
“But then I found out something.””
“What?””
“He didn’t choose between us because of blood.””
She looked at Thomas.
“He chose because of fear.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your mother knew Richard was dangerous.””
I swallowed.
“She changed my name?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted to protect you.””
“From what?””
Thomas took a breath.
“From him finding out who you really were.””
I stared.
“Meaning?””
He sat down.
“Your mother knew Richard had discovered the DNA results.””
I looked at the report.
“He knew I wasn’t his.””
“Yes.””
“And he still raised me.””
Thomas’s face tightened.
“Because he believed you were useful.””
The word hurt.
Useful.
Not loved.
Not wanted.
Useful.
“Why?””
“Because your mother loved you.””
Thomas looked at me.
“She knew Richard would never forgive Andrew’s child.””
I looked at him.
“So she hid me.””
“Yes.””
“By pretending I was his.””
“Yes.””
“And Caroline?””
“She was hidden because Richard wanted revenge.””
I closed my eyes.
My entire life was built around a decision made before I could speak.
My mother tried to protect me.
My father tried to own me.
And my sister lost everything because of it.
I looked at Caroline.
“I’m sorry.””
Her face softened.
“For what?””
“For getting the life you should have had.””
She shook her head.
“You didn’t steal anything from me.””
“But I had a family.””
“And I had the truth.””
She smiled sadly.
“Neither one was enough.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was true.
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Daniel gave them everything.
The recording.
The messages.
The documents.
The evidence from the apartment.
For the first time in years, my father’s version of events wasn’t the only one.
But Richard Morgan was gone.
The officers searched the area.
Nothing.
He had vanished.
Of course he had.
Men like my father didn’t run from consequences.
They ran from losing control.
When the apartment finally became quiet again, Thomas placed the flash drive on the table.
“We need to watch this.””
Mara nodded.
“Your mother recorded everything.””
I looked at the screen.
A part of me wanted to destroy it.
Because every answer had brought more pain.
But I needed to know.
I plugged it in.
A video appeared.
The date was three years earlier.
One week before my accident.
My mother appeared on screen.
Older.
Paler.
But alive.
I covered my mouth.
I had forgotten how much I missed her.
“Hello, Leah.””
Her voice alone nearly broke me.
“If you’re watching this, then Richard failed.””
Tears blurred my vision.
My mother smiled sadly.
“I know you’re probably angry.””
I whispered:
“I am.””
Daniel looked at me.
The video continued.
“I know you’ll wonder why I didn’t tell you everything sooner.””
My mother looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
She took a breath.
“Not for myself.””
Her eyes lifted.
“For you.””
The screen flickered.
Then she continued.
“Richard found out about the DNA test.””
My hands tightened.
“He knows one of my daughters is Andrew’s child.””
She paused.
“He does not know which one.””
Thomas looked away.
My mother continued.
“He believes Caroline is the one.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And that is why he abandoned her.””
I closed my eyes.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“But Richard made one mistake.””
A pause.
“He assumed love follows blood.””
The words hit me.
“He thought because Elena was his daughter, he had power over her.””
I froze.
Elena.
My mother said my name.
Not Leah.
Elena.
“I named you Elena because Andrew loved that name.””
Thomas covered his face.
My mother smiled.
“He said it meant light.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“I kept that name hidden because Richard would have destroyed it.””
The video continued.
“Leah was the name Richard gave you.””
I stopped breathing.
“He changed your identity.””
Daniel whispered:
“Oh my God.””
My mother looked away.
“I let him believe he won.””
Then her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Because I discovered what Richard had done.””
The room became silent.
“He wasn’t only stealing money.””
She looked directly at the camera.
“He was buying silence.””
My mother reached for something off-screen.
A folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Names.
“He has hurt people who threatened him.””
She swallowed.
“And one of those people was Andrew.””
Thomas looked up sharply.
“What?””
My mother continued.
“Andrew did not disappear.””
The room froze.
“He was killed.””
Thomas stood.
“What?””
My mother’s voice shook.
“Richard arranged it.””
Nobody moved.
The video continued.
“I tried to report him.””
She looked terrified.
“But Richard found out.””
A pause.
“He told me if I went to the police, he would make sure both my daughters disappeared.””
The screen flickered.
Then came the final sentence.
The one that changed everything.
“Leah… Elena… if you’re watching this, you need to know the truth.””
She leaned closer.
“Your father didn’t cause your accident because you found his money.””
I held my breath.
“He caused it because you found the evidence that he killed your real father.””
The video ended.
No goodbye.
No final words.
Just a black screen.
Nobody spoke.
Then Caroline whispered:
“Richard killed Andrew.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
But he wasn’t looking at the screen.
He was looking at the floor.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Thomas?””
His face was pale.
“I knew Andrew died.””
I stared.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“I knew.””
My stomach tightened.
“You knew?””
“I knew Richard was involved.””
“Then why didn’t you tell my mother?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
The same words.
Again.
Everyone had been afraid.
My mother.
Mara.
Thomas.
Even Daniel.
And my father had built his entire empire on that fear.
I stood.
“What else do you know?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What else?””
He looked at me.
And finally said:
“The night Andrew died…”
His voice broke.
“I was there.””
The room went silent.
Again.
But this time, there was something different.
Not confusion.
Not fear.
Betrayal.
Thomas whispered:
“I saw Richard leave the scene.””
Daniel stood.
“Then why didn’t you stop him?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because I wasn’t just a witness.””
He swallowed.
“I was the reason Richard wanted Andrew gone.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked down.
Then he said the one thing none of us expected.
“Because Andrew wasn’t your biological father.””
Everyone froze.
Thomas looked at me.
“I was.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Caroline’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
“It’s Richard.””
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Don’t answer.””
But Caroline already had.
She put it on speaker.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
“Now you know the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then he said:
“But you still don’t know the biggest lie.””
My fingers curled.
“What lie?””
A pause.
Then my father whispered:
“The accident three years ago wasn’t meant for Elena.””
My blood turned cold.
“It was meant for Caroline.””
May you like
The call ended.
And every person in the room looked at my sister.
