Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Came Home

The name stared back at me.

*Emily.*

For a moment, I thought I had forgotten how to breathe.

“That’s not my name.””

My voice sounded distant.

Almost like someone else was speaking.

Thomas didn’t answer.

Neither did Mara.

Daniel picked up the paper again.

His eyes moved over the handwriting.

“This is Mom’s writing?””

Mara nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then what does Emily mean?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Thomas.

“You knew?””

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Regret.

“I suspected.””

My heart sank.

“You suspected?””

“Leah—”

“No.””

I pushed myself away from the couch.

Pain shot through my injured leg, but I barely felt it.

“You all keep saying my name like that fixes everything.””

I pointed at the paper.

“My mother wrote that I wasn’t Leah.””

Mara stood.

“She didn’t mean—”

“What did she mean?””

My voice cracked.

“Who am I?””

Nobody answered.

That silence hurt more than any lie.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“You’re my sister.””

I looked at him.

“Am I?””

The question destroyed him.

His face fell.

“Leah.””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked down.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

Because that was the cruelest part.

My father hadn’t just stolen facts from me.

He had stolen my confidence in my own life.

Every memory had a question mark attached to it.

Every photograph.

Every story.

Every moment I thought I understood.

Thomas walked slowly toward the table.

“There is something your mother wanted you to know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Another secret?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

He continued.

“And I think this one explains everything.””

He opened the folder he had brought.

Inside were several documents.

The first was a hospital record.

I recognized the logo.

The same hospital where I had been born.

Thomas placed it in front of me.

“This was sealed.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Richard requested restricted access.””

I looked at the page.

Two newborn records.

Two identical birth times.

Then a handwritten note.

*Identification issue unresolved.*

My stomach twisted.

“What does that mean?””

Mara sat beside me.

“It means there was confusion after the birth.””

“Confusion?””

She nodded.

“Your mother was exhausted. She had complications. The babies were moved between rooms.””

I stared at the document.

“And nobody knew which baby was which?””

“Not immediately.””

Daniel whispered, “That’s impossible.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“It happened.””

I looked up.

“Then how did Dad decide?””

Nobody answered.

I already knew.

“He chose.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That one of you was not his biological child.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Thomas placed another document down.

A DNA report.

The date was three years before my accident.

I looked at the names.

My father.

And a woman.

My mother.

The results were highlighted.

*Probability of paternity: 0%.*

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Daniel looked away.

“Dad knew.””

Mara nodded.

“He had a test done secretly.””

My throat tightened.

“Which means…”

Thomas finished the sentence.

“He knew one of the twins was not his.””

I stared at the report.

A thousand questions crashed into each other.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

“Who wasn’t his daughter?””

Mara looked at me.

“Your mother never knew.””

“But Dad did.””

“Yes.””

“And he chose one of us.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas’s voice was quiet.

“Because Richard believed he could use the truth.””

I looked at him.

“What truth?””

“That one child belonged to another man.””

My entire body froze.

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Thomas looked at the DNA report.

Then at me.

“Your mother’s first love.””

I sat down slowly.

The room spun.

My mother.

My father.

Another man.

A secret buried before I was even old enough to speak.

“Who was he?””

Mara looked away.

“His name was Andrew Hale.””

I looked at Thomas.

His face changed.

I understood before anyone spoke.

“You.””

Thomas nodded.

“I was your mother’s first love.””

The room became completely silent.

Daniel stared.

“Wait.””

He pointed at Thomas.

“You’re saying—”

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at me.

“I am your biological father.””

I couldn’t move.

The stranger who had appeared with my mother’s letter.

The man my father feared.

The man who had known the truth.

My father.

Not the man who raised me.

The man standing in front of me.

“No.””

The word came out weak.

Thomas looked hurt.

“I understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to show up after twenty-eight years and say that.””

“You’re right.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I don’t.””

“Where were you?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Trying to find you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because Richard made sure I couldn’t.””

I stood.

“You let him?””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“I fought him.””

“Not enough.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Everyone went quiet.

Thomas accepted it.

“You’re right.””

That made me angrier.

I wanted him to argue.

To defend himself.

To give me something to hate.

Instead, he looked devastated.

“I should have found you sooner.””

I looked away.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Everyone needs to slow down.””

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“I spent my whole life being told I was difficult. Confused. Too emotional.””

My voice shook.

“And now I find out I wasn’t even the person I thought I was.””

Daniel’s eyes softened.

“You’re still you.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“You’re the same person who sat with Mom every night when she was sick. You’re the same person who gave Noah your favorite birthday gift because he liked it more than you did. You’re the same person who never stopped trying to believe Dad loved you.””

My eyes filled.

Daniel swallowed.

“That doesn’t disappear because Richard lied.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Not my father.

Someone younger.

“Leah?””

I stiffened.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Michael.””

Thomas looked confused.

Daniel put the phone on speaker.

Michael continued.

“I don’t know how much they’ve told you.””

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m Caroline’s brother.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

His voice was shaking.

“It’s not.””

Mara stepped closer.

“Caroline had no brother.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“That’s what Richard wanted everyone to believe.””

My heart started racing.

“Where is Caroline?””

Silence.

Then Michael said:

“She’s not safe.””

“We know.””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He took a breath.

“Caroline found something.””

“What?””

“The original hospital records.””

Thomas looked at me.

Michael continued.

“She found out which baby left the hospital.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“And?””

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

“She found out Richard chose wrong.””

The room went still.

“What does that mean?””

Michael’s voice dropped.

“It means the daughter Richard raised was never supposed to be you.””

I looked at Thomas.

At Daniel.

At the papers scattered across the table.

“Where is Caroline now?””

Michael hesitated.

Then:

“She’s coming to you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

The line went quiet.

Then Michael said:

“Because she knows who tried to kill your mother.””

A sound came from the hallway outside my apartment.

A soft scrape.

Everyone turned.

Someone was standing on the other side of the door.

Daniel moved in front of me.

Thomas reached for the nearest object.

The person outside knocked.

Three times.

Slowly.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Leah.””

My blood froze.

It was Caroline.

But she sounded terrified.

“Please open the door.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“He found me.””
