Chapter 8: The Box That Held My Father's Last Secret

The following morning, Michael accompanied me and my mother to the bank.

Vanessa had spent the night at Patricia's house.

Before leaving, she'd sent me seventeen messages.

Some were apologies.

Some were accusations.

The last one simply said:

Please don't let James destroy us.

I hadn't responded.

At the bank, a manager named Mr. Harris led us into a private room.

"Mr. Carter, the safety deposit box was opened three years ago under your father's name. Your mother was listed as the secondary authorized person.""

My mother nodded.

"That's correct.""

Mr. Harris examined the key.

"Box 314.""

He disappeared into the vault.

When he returned, he carried a small metal container.

He placed it on the table.

My mother's hands began trembling.

"Your father told me never to open it unless something happened.""

I looked at her.

"Mom, something happened.""

She nodded.

Mr. Harris left us alone.

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were three things.

A thick envelope.

A small USB drive.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

My father stood beside James Whitmore in front of a warehouse. Both men were smiling.

But someone had written a date on the back.

October 14, 2015.

Beneath the date were four words.

The night everything changed.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a series of financial records showing transfers between several company accounts.

My father's name appeared on some documents.

James's name appeared on many more.

Michael examined the pages.

"These transactions are interesting.""

"Why?""

"Several transfers were made into accounts that don't appear to belong to the company.""

"Whose accounts?""

He turned a page.

"One belongs to an offshore holding company. Another appears to be connected to James Whitmore.""

I picked up the USB drive.

"What's on this?""

Michael looked at it.

"Let's not open it on a public computer. I'll have it examined properly.""

My mother reached into the box.

"There was something else.""

She removed a folded sheet of paper from beneath the envelope.

It was a handwritten note.

Evelyn, if Daniel ever needs to know the truth, give him the recording.

I looked at her.

"What recording?""

She pointed toward the USB drive.

"I think that's what he meant.""

Michael placed the drive inside an evidence pouch.

"We'll arrange a forensic copy.""

I looked at the documents again.

There was a transaction dated two days before Dad's death.

A transfer of $240,000.

The receiving account belonged to a company called Whitmore Holdings.

But the authorization signature was my father's.

And beside it was a handwritten note.

Approved under protest.

"Why would Dad approve a payment under protest?""

Michael examined the document.

"He may have been forced to sign it. We can't establish that from this page alone.""

My mother suddenly leaned forward.

"That's what James wanted.""

"What?""

"Your father refused to transfer the money. James told him the company would be destroyed if he didn't cooperate.""

Michael looked at her.

"Did you hear that directly?""

Mom nodded.

"Your father told me after their first argument.""

I stared at the papers.

The missing money.

The threats.

The accident.

The forged property documents.

Everything was beginning to connect.

But one question remained.

Why had Vanessa become involved?

That afternoon, Michael called me.

"Daniel, we have something.""

I sat in my car outside the office.

"What?""

"The USB drive contains several audio files. One of them is a recording of your father speaking with James.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"Can you send it to me?""

"I'd prefer you listen with me. Some of the material is sensitive.""

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in Michael's office.

He connected a laptop to a speaker.

The first recording began with the sound of a door closing.

Then my father's voice.

"James, the transfers stop today.""

A second voice answered.

"You don't get to decide that.""

"I'm not signing another document.""

"You already signed the others.""

"Because you threatened my family.""

There was a chair scraping against the floor.

Then James spoke again.

"You think Daniel will thank you when he discovers what you've done?""

My father sounded exhausted.

"Daniel has nothing to do with this.""

"He's your son. His name is already in the records.""

"His name is there because you put it there!""

A pause.

Then James laughed.

"Maybe you should have thought about that before trusting me.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Michael stopped the audio.

"There's another file.""

He opened it.

This time, the recording began with my father's voice speaking quietly.

"If anything happens to me, Evelyn, you must make sure Daniel never signs anything James puts in front of him.""

Then came my mother's voice.

"What are you saying, Robert?""

"I think he's planning something.""

"Should we go to the police?""

"Not yet. I need proof.""

A few seconds passed.

Then Dad said something that made me sit forward.

"There's one person James is afraid of.""

"Who?""

"His daughter.""

The recording ended.

I looked at Michael.

"His daughter?""

Michael nodded.

"We've identified a reference in the financial records. James has a daughter named Olivia Whitmore. She was listed as a company secretary several years ago.""

"Where is she now?""

"She left the company after the financial investigation began.""

I leaned back.

"Can we contact her?""

"We can try.""

My phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

Daniel, James is coming to the house tonight. He says he has the original documents. Please don't let him speak to your mother.

I immediately called her.

She answered on the first ring.

"Daniel?""

"Why is James coming to my house?""

"I don't know. He called Mom.""

"Then tell him not to come.""

"I tried. He said he wants the remaining money.""

"What remaining money?""

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The money I didn't tell you about.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much?""

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Where is it?""

"James has it.""

"Why?""

"He said it was payment for the documents.""

I stared at the audio player.

"Vanessa, what documents?""

She began crying.

"The ones proving your father transferred the money before he died.""

"Those transfers were fraudulent.""

"I know that now!""

"How long have you known?""

"Since last week.""

I stood.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was afraid.""

I lowered my voice.

"Of James?""

She whispered:

"Of what he'll do if I tell you who actually signed the final transfer.""

I froze.

"What are you talking about?""

Then she said:

"Daniel, the final transfer wasn't signed by your father.""

A long silence followed.

"Who signed it, Vanessa?""

She took a shaky breath.

May you like

Then answered.

"Your mother.""
