Chapter 4: The $487,000 Secret
"Your father left it for you.""
My mother's voice trembled from the staircase.
I turned toward her.
"Mom, what money are you talking about?""
Evelyn slowly descended the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Well, now we're getting somewhere.""
I shot my wife a warning look.
"Not another word.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're telling me to be quiet in my own house?""
"Right now, yes.""
My mother reached the bottom of the staircase. She was wearing the same pale blue cardigan she'd worn to dinner. Her silver hair was slightly disheveled, and her eyes were swollen from crying.
She looked at the bank statement.
Then she looked at me.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
"After I understood what your father had arranged.""
I picked up the paper.
The account had been opened eleven years earlier. The statement showed a balance of $487,000, with the most recent transaction dated just two weeks ago.
"Mom, Dad died three years ago. How is there still an active account in his name?""
She sat down.
"Because your father didn't want the money transferred immediately.""
Vanessa scoffed.
"Convenient explanation.""
I ignored her.
"Please tell me everything.""
Mom folded her hands.
"Do you remember when your father sold his construction company?""
I nodded.
"He told me he'd received a good offer, but I never knew how much.""
"He received considerably more than he told you. Almost seven hundred thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"Seven hundred thousand?""
She nodded.
"Your father had been worried about your future. He knew you were building a family, raising Ethan, and working long hours. He wanted to leave you something that would give you security.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because he made me promise.""
My mother reached into her cardigan pocket and produced a small envelope.
It was yellowed with age.
My father's handwriting was on the front.
For Daniel. When the time is right.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My throat tightened.
"Where did you get this?""
"He gave it to me two weeks before he died.""
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My dear Daniel,
If you're reading this, I've probably left this world before I had the chance to explain everything.
I sold my company because I wanted your future to be easier than mine was. Your mother and I have spent our lives working hard, and I don't want you spending yours worrying about money.
I've placed most of the proceeds into a protected account. Your mother is responsible for overseeing it until you are ready.
There is one thing I want you to remember. Money can make people show you who they really are. Don't let it change the way you treat the people who stood beside you before you had any.
Take care of your mother. She sacrificed more than you'll ever know.
Love, Dad.
I stopped reading.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I looked at the final paragraph.
"Mom, why didn't you transfer this to me?""
She shook her head.
"Your father arranged for the money to be released in stages. He wanted you to have it when you turned forty.""
I was thirty-nine.
"Did Vanessa know about this?""
Mom hesitated.
"She found out last year.""
I turned toward my wife.
Vanessa's expression had become unreadable.
"How?""
Mom continued.
"She was helping me organize some documents. She found a letter from your father's attorney. At first, she asked questions about it. I thought she was simply curious.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Because I was curious. I'm your son's wife. I have a right to know about our family's finances.""
Mom looked down.
"Then she started asking me to withdraw money.""
"How much?"" I asked.
"First, five thousand. She said she needed it for an emergency.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you take five thousand dollars from my mother's account?""
She lifted her chin.
"She gave it to me.""
"Why?""
"Because I needed it.""
"For what?""
"Personal expenses.""
Mom's voice was almost inaudible.
"Then she asked for another ten thousand.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"Oh, stop making it sound like I robbed you!""
I turned toward her.
"Did you take the money?""
"Your mother agreed to help me.""
"That wasn't my question.""
She threw her hands up.
"Fine! Yes! I took some money.
So what? It's family money!""
I looked at the statement again.
"How much?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
My mother reached into her pocket and pulled out another folded sheet.
"This is what I wrote down.""
I unfolded it.
There were seven transactions.
$5,000.
$10,000.
$8,500.
$12,000.
$15,000.
$7,500.
And one final withdrawal of $20,000.
The total was $78,000.
I looked at my wife.
"Seventy-eight thousand dollars?""
She shrugged.
"Don't act like we're struggling.""
"That's not the point.""
"You make more than enough money, Daniel. I wanted to enjoy some of it.""
"You took it from my mother's account!""
"She was never going to spend all that money!""
Mom's face crumpled.
"I was saving it for you, sweetheart.""
I walked over and knelt beside her.
"I know, Mom.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Wonderful. Everyone feels sorry for Evelyn. Nobody cares about what I've put up with.""
I stood.
"You're going to explain every withdrawal to my attorney.""
Her face changed.
"You're threatening me?""
"No. I'm telling you what's happening.""
She looked at the envelope in my hand.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"You're forgetting one very important thing, Daniel.""
"What?""
"Your mother signed the authorization forms.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She nodded weakly.
"I did. Vanessa told me they were temporary documents so she could help manage the account.""
"Did you understand what you were signing?""
Mom shook her head.
Vanessa smiled.
"Then perhaps you should be careful about accusing me of anything.""
I took a step toward her.
"Let the attorney decide.""
She grabbed her handbag.
"Fine. But don't expect me to sit here while you humiliate me.""
Patricia appeared at the kitchen doorway.
She had apparently been listening from the living room.
"Vanessa, darling, let's go.""
Vanessa turned toward her mother.
Then she looked at me.
"You'll regret choosing her over me.""
I didn't answer.
She walked out.
Patricia followed, but not before giving my mother a cold look.
When the front door slammed, the house finally became quiet.
I sat beside Evelyn.
"Mom, I need to ask you something.""
She looked at me.
"Anything.""
"Did Vanessa ever threaten you?""
Her fingers began trembling.
She stared at the floor.
Then she whispered:
"She told me that if I ever told you about the money, she would make sure you lost everything.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Everything?""
Mom nodded.
"She said she had papers with your signature.""
I looked at the letter from my father.
Then at the bank statement.
Then at my mother.
"What papers, Mom?""
May you like
She swallowed.
"The papers that would give her control of this house.""
