Chapter 8: The Daughter Nobody Knew About

Linda stood in the doorway like she had been waiting for this moment for years.

No panic.

No tears.

No desperate attempt to pretend.

Just a quiet confidence that made my skin crawl.

Ryan held the birth certificate in his hand.

His fingers were trembling.

“Who is she?””

Linda looked at him.

Not at the paper.

Not at the evidence.

At him.

“My daughter.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Ryan stared.

“What?””

Linda walked into the office slowly.

“She is my daughter.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“You told me I was your only child.””

“I told you what you needed to know.””

The sentence made my stomach turn.

Because it was the same thing she had done to me.

She never lied accidentally.

She lied strategically.

She decided what people deserved to know.

Ryan looked down at the birth certificate again.

“What’s her name?””

Linda’s eyes moved toward me.

Then she said:

“Emily.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Linda watched my reaction carefully.

Like she had been waiting for it.

Ryan looked between us.

“What are you talking about?””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

Linda tilted her head.

“You never wondered why I recognized your last name?””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Of course you didn’t.””

Her smile was cruel.

“You trusted everyone.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Mom, explain.””

Linda ignored him.

She kept looking at me.

“Your father was very good at hiding things.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

“Why? Because you think he was perfect?””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“You don’t get to rewrite my memories.””

Linda laughed softly.

“You really are just like him.””

The room went silent.

Ryan looked at her.

“Mom.””

But she continued.

“Your father always believed he could save everyone.””

“Stop.””

“He believed exposing me would make him a hero.””

My breathing became uneven.

“Exposing you?””

Linda walked closer.

“Do you want to know why your father was so interested in my business?””

I didn’t answer.

“Because he knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That you weren’t his daughter.””

The room disappeared.

I heard nothing.

Not Ryan.

Not the rain.

Nothing.

I just stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Linda’s expression didn’t change.

“You heard me.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Ryan stepped between us.

“Mom, enough.””

“No.””

Linda looked at him.

“For once, everyone is going to hear the truth.””

She pointed at the birth certificate.

“Emily is my daughter.””

My stomach turned.

“No.””

“You were born before I married Daniel.””

I shook my head.

“My mother…”

“Your mother raised you.””

Linda’s voice became colder.

“But she wasn’t the only woman who gave birth to you.””

I couldn’t move.

The memory of my mother’s face flashed through my mind.

Her arms around me.

Her voice telling me I was loved.

My entire life.

My entire identity.

Was it all a lie?

“No.””

I whispered it again.

Linda smiled.

“That’s exactly how Ryan reacted when he learned his father wasn’t dead.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Don’t compare this.””

“I’m showing you a pattern.””

“No.””

His voice became angry.

“The pattern is you lying.””

For the first time, Linda looked hurt.

Not because he insulted her.

Because he rejected her.

“You think I did all this because I hated Emily?””

She laughed quietly.

“You’re wrong.””

I looked at her.

“Then why?””

Her eyes moved to me.

“Because I wanted my daughter back.””

The words made me sick.

“Your daughter?””

“Yes.””

“I am not your daughter.””

Linda stepped closer.

“You are.””

I backed away.

“No.””

“Ask Daniel.””

That name changed everything.

Ryan looked at me.

“Dad knows?””

Linda smiled.

“Your father knows many things.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Ryan froze.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Daniel.

Ryan stared.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked at Linda.

Then at me.

And his expression broke.

“Emily.””

I felt my heart racing.

“How do you know?””

Daniel stepped inside.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

Ryan looked furious.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I knew part of it.””

“Part?””

“I knew Linda was hiding something.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You all knew.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“I tried to tell you.””

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

Ryan froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Linda.

“She stopped me.””

Linda smiled.

“Because you would have believed him.””

Ryan stared.

“Mom…”

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, your father and I were friends.””

I swallowed.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

His eyes moved toward Linda.

“From her.””

The room went silent.

Linda crossed her arms.

“You’re still pretending you’re innocent?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m not the one who changed a child’s identity.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That Linda had a child before you.””

I looked at Linda.

“Me?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not you.””

Confusion filled me.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked at Ryan.

Then back at me.

“Your father discovered Linda had another daughter.””

I looked at the birth certificate.

The name.

The one we still hadn’t said aloud.

“Who is she?””

Daniel’s face became heavy.

“She’s the reason Linda has been controlling both of you.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

Then said:

“Claire.””

The room stopped.

My sister.

My sister.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“She is Linda’s biological daughter.””

Ryan looked shocked.

“But Claire is Emily’s sister.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel looked at Linda.

“Because your mother gave Claire to another family.””

My head spun.

“Why?””

Linda finally spoke.

“Because I was young.””

I looked at her.

“And that excuses everything?””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“I understand perfectly.””

“You think I wanted to lose my child?””

“Then why did you abandon her?””

Linda’s face changed.

A flash of pain appeared.

Real pain.

But it disappeared quickly.

“Because I had no choice.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You always had a choice.””

Ryan looked at Linda.

“You manipulated Emily because she was your daughter?””

Linda looked at me.

“I manipulated you because I wanted to protect you.””

I laughed.

The sound came out broken.

“Protect me?””

“You were being raised by people who lied to you.””

“My mother loved me.””

Linda went silent.

And that silence told me something.

Something important.

She didn’t hate my mother.

She hated that my mother won.

“She took my place,” Linda whispered.

I stared.

“What?””

“Your mother got the life I should have had.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“Linda.””

“No.””

She pointed at me.

“She raised my daughter.””

Her voice cracked.

“She got the family. The memories. The love.””

I looked at her.

“And you thought hurting me would fix that?””

Linda didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

Ryan stepped closer.

“You attacked your own daughter.””

Linda looked at him.

“I was trying to wake her up.””

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You were trying to control her.””

The words hurt Linda.

I could see it.

Because coming from Ryan, they mattered.

Then her expression changed.

She smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

“You still don’t understand.””

Ryan frowned.

“What?””

Linda looked at Claire’s birth certificate.

Then at me.

“You think the truth is that Claire is my daughter.””

She stepped closer.

“But that’s only half the truth.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

Linda looked directly into my eyes.

“The reason Claire betrayed you…”

She paused.

“Is because she knows what really happened the night your father died.””

I froze.

Ryan looked at me.

Daniel closed his eyes.

May you like

And Linda whispered:

“Ask your sister why she was there.””
