Chapter 2: The Voice On The Recording
The room became completely silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes right before something breaks.
Ryan stood in the middle of the living room, his hand slowly falling away from my throat. His eyes moved between me, Linda, and the phone still playing the recording.
Linda’s face had gone pale.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked like she didn’t know what to say.
That scared me more than her anger ever had.
Because Linda always had an answer.
She always had a story.
She always knew exactly how to make herself look innocent.
But now she was trapped.
“Emily,” Ryan said quietly.
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Confused.
“What is that?””
I held my phone tighter.
“The truth.””
Linda immediately stepped forward.
“Ryan, don’t listen to her. She’s trying to manipulate you.””
I looked at her.
“Manipulate him?””
My voice shook.
“You spent months making me feel like I was crazy every time I told him what you did.””
“Watch your mouth.””
“No.””
The word came out stronger than I expected.
“No, Linda. I’m done being afraid of you.””
Ryan looked at me.
I could see the confusion in his eyes.
Maybe for the first time, he was seeing something he had refused to see.
Not his wife being dramatic.
Not his mother being misunderstood.
Two people standing in front of him.
One telling the truth.
One trying to bury it.
I pressed play again.
The recording filled the room.
Linda’s voice came through the speaker.
“I’m telling you, I can’t keep waiting.””
Ryan’s eyebrows pulled together.
His eyes slowly moved toward his mother.
The recording continued.
“She thinks she owns this place now. She walks around like she’s the queen of the house.””
A cold feeling ran through me.
I remembered that phone call.
Five minutes before she attacked me.
I had been in the kitchen filling the bucket when I heard Linda whispering in the hallway.
At the time, I didn’t know she was talking about me.
I didn’t know she was preparing herself.
I just knew something felt wrong.
The recording continued.
“I’m going to fix this tonight.””
Ryan looked at Linda.
“What does that mean?””
Linda immediately shook her head.
“I don’t know. That’s not what it sounds like.””
The recording kept playing.
“I need Ryan to finally see who she really is.””
My stomach twisted.
Then came Linda’s final sentence.
“I’ll make sure he chooses me.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Ryan stared at his mother.
“Mom.””
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“Ryan, you’re really going to believe a recording from her?””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
She was still doing it.
Even with the evidence sitting between us.
“You just heard yourself,” I said.
Linda turned toward me.
“You think a few words prove anything?””
“A few words?””
I stepped forward.
“My face was in a bucket.””
Her expression hardened.
“You pushed me.””
“I pushed you away after you attacked me!””
“You touched me first!””
Ryan raised his voice.
“Stop!””
Both of us froze.
He rubbed his forehead.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not protective.
Just overwhelmed.
“I need to understand what happened.””
I stared at him.
“Then ask the right person.””
His eyes met mine.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you’ve spent three years believing everything your mother tells you without ever asking why I’m always the one apologizing.””
Ryan looked away.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because deep down, I had hoped this moment would change everything.
I thought once he saw the truth, he would immediately understand.
But people don’t erase years of denial in a few seconds.
Especially when the person they are forced to question is someone they love.
Linda walked toward him slowly.
“Ryan, I know you’re upset.””
She touched his arm.
“I know this is shocking.””
He looked at her.
“Mom…”
“No, let me speak.””
Her voice became soft.
Careful.
“I have never liked fighting with Emily. I tried. I really tried.””
I watched her.
Almost impressed by how easily she could transform.
“I welcomed her into this family.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You humiliated me.””
Linda looked at me with fake sadness.
“See? She’s still attacking me.””
Ryan looked between us.
“Emily, just…”
He stopped.
Like he didn’t know how to finish.
I understood what he was going to say.
Just calm down.
Just stop.
Just let Mom explain.
Those words had protected Linda for years.
“I need air,” I whispered.
Ryan frowned.
“Emily—”
“No.””
I grabbed my jacket from the chair.
“I need five minutes where nobody tells me how I’m supposed to feel.””
I walked toward the front door.
Behind me, Linda said quietly,
“Ryan, I’m scared of her.””
I stopped.
Slowly, I turned around.
The woman who had held my head underwater was now hiding behind my husband.
My husband.
The person who promised me he would always protect me.
I looked at Ryan.
“Ask her why she knows the camera doesn’t work.””
Linda’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Ryan saw it too.
“Mom?””
Linda looked away.
“I just assumed.””
“You assumed?””
“Yes.””
“That’s a pretty specific assumption.””
She sighed.
“I don’t know, Ryan. Maybe because she’s always been paranoid.””
My heart sank.
There it was again.
The blame.
The shift.
Somehow, everything always became my fault.
Ryan looked tired.
“Emily, can we talk tomorrow?””
I stared at him.
Tomorrow.
That word hurt.
Because tomorrow was what people said when they didn’t want to deal with today.
“Sure.””
I opened the door.
Then I heard Linda say something behind me.
Something that made me stop.
“She was always going to leave you.””
I slowly turned.
Ryan looked at her.
“What?””
Linda’s eyes were still on me.
“She never loved you.””
My chest tightened.
“Linda…”
“She wanted your money. Your house. Your lifestyle.””
“That’s not true.””
Ryan looked at me.
And for a second, I saw doubt.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Doubt.
That tiny crack was enough to hurt.
Because Linda didn’t need Ryan to completely believe her.
She only needed him to question me.
That was how she won.
I left without saying another word.
I drove for almost an hour before I realized I had no idea where I was going.
The rain had gotten heavier.
Streetlights reflected across my windshield like broken pieces of glass.
My hands were shaking on the steering wheel.
Not from what Linda did.
I had already survived that.
What hurt was Ryan’s reaction.
The man who held my hand when my father died.
The man who promised me, “It’s you and me against the world.””
The man who knew every scar I carried.
He saw me struggling to breathe.
And his first instinct was to protect the person hurting me.
I pulled into a small parking lot near an empty park.
I sat there for almost twenty minutes.
Then my phone rang.
Ryan.
I stared at the screen.
Part of me wanted to answer.
Another part of me was afraid.
Because I didn’t know which Ryan would be on the other side.
The husband who loved me.
Or the son who always chose his mother.
I finally answered.
“Hello?””
There was silence.
Then Ryan spoke.
“Where are you?””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Because I want to talk.””
“About what?””
Another pause.
“About the recording.””
I waited.
“Ryan, what do you want to know?””
“I listened to it again.””
My heart beat faster.
“And?””
“I heard something.””
The rain tapped against the windshield.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“After Mom said she would make sure I choose her…”
He stopped.
“What?””
“I heard another voice.””
I sat up.
“What voice?””
“I don’t know.””
The fear in his voice was new.
Real.
“Emily…”
“Yes?””
“I think my mother wasn’t talking to herself.””
I looked out at the dark park.
A strange chill moved through me.
Because I had been so focused on proving what Linda did to me.
I hadn’t thought about who she was talking to.
Ryan continued.
“There was someone else on that call.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
May you like
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Emily… I think it was someone we both know.””
