Chapter 7: The Doctor Who Was Never On My Side

The hallway outside the interview room became a blur.

Detective Harris moved quickly, speaking into his phone while officers followed behind him.

The hospital that had felt like my first safe place now felt like another battlefield.

Every person wearing a badge.

Every person wearing a white coat.

Every stranger walking past my room.

I found myself wondering the same thing over and over.

Who knew?

Who had been watching?

Who had been helping?

The question was worse than the pain.

Because pain came from one moment.

Betrayal came from realizing the moment was only part of a much larger plan.

The nurse pushed my wheelchair back toward the room.

I noticed she kept looking over her shoulder.

“You okay?”” I asked.

She looked surprised.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

She gave a small, nervous smile.

“I should be asking you that.””

“I’m asking anyway.””

She looked down.

“I’ve worked here for six years. I’ve seen a lot of things.””

I waited.

“But I’ve never seen someone fight this hard after everything you’ve been through.””

I looked away.

“I don’t feel strong.””

The nurse adjusted the blanket over my legs.

“Strong people usually don’t.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because I had spent so long believing strength meant never breaking.

Never crying.

Never admitting I was afraid.

But maybe strength was something else.

Maybe strength was telling the truth when everyone around you wanted a lie.

When we reached my room, Detective Harris was already there.

His expression was serious.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“What happened?””

He closed the door behind him.

“We are placing an officer outside your room.””

“Because of Dr. Cole?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“I trusted him.””

“I know.””

“He asked me questions. He looked me in the eyes.””

Detective Harris was quiet.

“Sometimes people use trust as a weapon.””

I looked at the hospital bed.

The place where I had cried.

The place where I had finally told the truth.

The place where someone had watched me sleep.

“What did he do?””

The detective placed a folder on the table.

“We are still investigating.””

“But?””

He opened it.

“But the deleted notes were recovered.””

My heart jumped.

“You recovered them?””

“Our technical team did.””

He turned the folder around.

The original medical examination.

The injuries.

The statements.

The details that proved what happened.

My eyes filled.

Not because I was relieved.

Because I realized how close I came to losing everything.

“He tried to erase it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Because someone paid him.””

The room went quiet.

“Daniel?””

“We believe so.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Money.

Control.

Power.

Everything came back to the same thing.

Daniel had never been afraid of hurting me.

He had been afraid of consequences.

My phone vibrated.

I looked down.

Another message.

Unknown number.

Detective Harris immediately reached for it.

“Don’t open it.””

But I already saw the preview.

*“Ask your sister what happened the night your father died.””*

My breathing stopped.

My father.

A memory buried deep.

A memory I had not thought about in years.

“What does that mean?”” Detective Harris asked.

I looked at Karen’s name in my contacts.

“She knows something.””

The detective studied me.

“Your sister?””

“Yes.””

“About your father?””

“I don’t know.””

But the fear in my voice answered for me.

A few minutes later, Karen returned.

She immediately noticed our expressions.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

She read the message.

The color left her face.

“Where did you get that?””

My chest tightened.

“You know.””

Karen looked away.

That was enough.

“Karen.””

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought it would destroy you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Karen, my husband tried to destroy me yesterday.””

She looked at the floor.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Her hands shook.

“The night Dad died…”

I waited.

“He didn’t die the way we were told.””

The room became silent.

My father.

The man who raised us.

The man whose death had always been described as a tragic accident.

“What are you saying?””

Karen looked at Detective Harris.

“Can I tell her alone?””

“No,” he said calmly.

“If this involves an investigation, everything needs to be documented.””

Karen nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“Dad found out something about Daniel’s family.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“About their money.””

Again.

Always money.

“He found documents.””

“What documents?””

Karen swallowed.

“The same trust documents Daniel is fighting for now.””

I stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“Dad found out the trust had conditions.””

“What conditions?””

“That Daniel needed a child.””

I looked down.

My baby.

The same thing.

The same reason.

Karen continued.

“But Dad also found another clause.””

“What?””

“If Daniel was ever involved in violence against the mother of his child…”

She paused.

“The trust would be transferred away from him.””

The room felt frozen.

“So Dad knew.””

“Yes.””

“And then he died.””

Karen nodded.

“I was seventeen. I didn’t understand everything.””

My voice became quiet.

“But you knew something.””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Daniel told me not to.””

I stared.

“Daniel?””

“He came to me after Dad’s funeral.””

My hands tightened.

“What did he say?””

Karen looked ashamed.

“He told me if I talked about what Dad found, people would think I was lying because I was grieving.””

I felt anger rising.

“He manipulated you.””

“Yes.””

“And you let him.””

The words were harsh.

But true.

Karen nodded.

“I did.””

Silence.

For a moment, I saw my younger sister again.

The girl who followed me everywhere.

The girl who cried when I moved away.

The girl who believed I could solve every problem.

But somewhere along the way, fear had changed both of us.

“What else did Dad find?””

Karen looked at the folder.

“Records.””

“What records?””

“Payments.””

My heart stopped.

“Payments to who?””

Karen looked at me.

“People who helped Daniel’s family.””

The answer came before she said it.

“Dr. Cole?””

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“Anyone else?””

Karen hesitated.

That hesitation frightened me.

“Karen.””

She whispered:

“There was a police officer.””

Detective Harris immediately looked up.

“Name.””

Karen shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

“I was young.””

“Try.””

She closed her eyes.

“I only remember Dad saying one thing.””

“What?””

“That if anything happened to him…”

Her voice broke.

“He told us not to trust anyone who said it was an accident.””

The room fell silent.

Because suddenly, the message made sense.

Daniel did not just know about my father.

He knew what my father discovered.

He knew what secrets had survived.

And now he knew I was getting close.

Detective Harris stood.

“We need to review your father’s case.””

Karen looked at him.

“It was closed.””

“Closed cases can be reopened.””

I stared at my phone.

At Daniel’s message.

At the years of lies.

A thought entered my mind.

A terrifying thought.

“Detective.””

He turned.

“What?””

“If Daniel knew my father found those documents…”

“Yes?””

“Then why did he marry me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the question was too obvious.

Too painful.

The truth slowly formed.

Daniel had not chosen me because he loved me.

He had chosen me because I was connected to the evidence.

Because I was the daughter of the man who almost exposed his family.

Because he needed to know what I knew.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a video.

From Daniel.

Detective Harris told me not to open it.

I did anyway.

The screen showed Daniel sitting somewhere dark.

His face was calm.

Almost peaceful.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Just confident.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Emily.””

My blood ran cold.

He rarely used my first name.

Only when he wanted something.

“I know you’re talking to the police.””

He smiled slightly.

“I know you found Rachel.””

A pause.

“I know you found the documents.””

I stopped breathing.

Then he said the words that made every person in the room go silent.

“But there’s one thing you still don’t know.””

He leaned closer to the camera.

“Your father didn’t die because he discovered our secret.””

The video paused.

Then continued.

“He died because he was about to tell you who was really responsible.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And beneath the video was one final message.

*“Ask your mother what she saw that night.””*
