Chapter 3: The Sister I Thought I Could Trust

The photograph sat between us like a loaded weapon.

I stared at it until my eyes hurt.

A silver sedan.

Parked near the emergency entrance.

The license plate was clear.

My sister’s car.

Karen’s car.

My mind rejected it before my heart even had time to react.

“No,” I whispered.

Detective Harris watched me carefully.

“Mrs. Carter, are you saying this is not your sister’s vehicle?””

“It is.””

“Then why was it here before she told you she was coming?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because I did not have an answer.

Karen had always been the one person I never questioned.

She was my little sister.

The person who knew every secret I carried.

The person who knew how afraid I was of Daniel.

The person who had hugged me in my kitchen three months earlier and said, “If he ever hurts you, you call me. I don’t care what time it is.””

I remembered her voice.

I remembered believing her.

And now her car was outside the hospital before she even knew I was there.

The detective leaned forward.

“Mrs. Carter, I’m not asking you to accuse anyone. I’m asking you to help us understand.””

I looked at the photo again.

“Maybe she came here for another reason.””

Detective Harris nodded slightly.

“Possible.””

“Maybe she was visiting someone else.””

“Possible.””

“Maybe…”

My voice faded.

Because I heard myself doing it.

Making excuses.

The same thing I had done for Daniel.

The same thing I had done for Evelyn.

Finding explanations for people who had hurt me because accepting the truth felt impossible.

The detective noticed.

“You don’t have to defend anyone right now.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because I realized I had spent my entire life defending people who never defended me.

A knock interrupted us.

The door opened.

Karen stood there.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were red.

She looked exactly like the sister who had always loved me.

“Where is she?””

The moment she saw me, her face collapsed.

“Oh my God.””

She rushed toward the bed.

But Detective Harris stepped between us.

“Ms. Carter, please wait.””

Karen stopped.

“What?””

“We have some questions.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

Then landed on the detective.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Her expression changed.

Confusion.

Then anger.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered if I actually knew her.

“Karen.””

Her eyes immediately softened.

“Yes?””

“Why was your car outside the hospital before I called you?””

The color disappeared from her face.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

And that second hurt more than anything.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

She looked at Detective Harris.

Then back at me.

“I don’t understand.””

I pushed the photograph toward her.

Her fingers touched the edge.

She did not pick it up.

“Karen?””

She swallowed.

“I…”

The hesitation was small.

Almost invisible.

But it was enough.

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

The room became silent.

Karen looked away.

That was when I knew.

The truth was standing in front of me.

And it was wearing my sister’s face.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this,” she whispered.

My heart sank.

“Find out what?””

Karen sat down slowly.

Her hands shook.

“I knew Daniel was angry.””

I stared at her.

“Angry?””

She looked at me.

“I knew he was planning something.””

A cold wave moved through my body.

“What does that mean?””

Karen started crying.

“I thought it was just an argument.””

“You thought he was going to hurt me?””

“No.””

“Then why were you there?””

She covered her face.

“I followed him.””

The room went completely still.

Detective Harris spoke first.

“You followed Mr. Carter to the house?””

Karen nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because he called me.””

My breath stopped.

“Daniel called you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The morning before it happened.””

My hands tightened around the blanket.

“What did he say?””

Karen looked down.

“He asked me to talk to you.””

I felt sick.

“Talk to me about what?””

“About leaving him.””

I blinked.

“What?””

Karen wiped her tears.

“He said you were unhappy. He said you were thinking about leaving after the baby was born.””

“That’s not true.””

“I know.””

“Then why would he say that?””

Karen’s silence answered before her words did.

“Because he wanted me to convince you to stay.””

The room felt colder.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“So you went to the house?””

“Yes.””

“And what happened?””

Karen looked at me.

“I got there too late.””

My stomach turned.

“Too late?””

She nodded.

“I parked across the street.””

I could barely breathe.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you heard?””

Karen closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

A sound escaped my throat.

Not a scream.

Not a cry.

Something worse.

A broken sound.

“You heard me?””

She nodded.

“I heard you calling Daniel’s name.””

My vision blurred.

“And you didn’t help me?””

Karen started crying harder.

“I wanted to.””

“Wanted to?””

“I was scared.””

I stared at her.

The same excuse.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had explanations.

But I was the one who had been lying on that bench.

I was the one who had been screaming.

“Karen,” I whispered, “you heard me begging.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed outside.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

I turned my face.

I could not look at her anymore.

The person I thought would save me had watched me suffer.

Detective Harris continued questioning her.

“Why didn’t you call emergency services?””

Karen’s voice was barely audible.

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

My head snapped toward her.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He knew I was there.””

The room changed.

Suddenly, the photograph made sense.

The threat made sense.

The message.

Karen’s name.

“He knew you were outside?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Karen hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out her phone.

“My phone.””

She unlocked it.

“I was recording.””

Detective Harris took it.

“Recording what?””

“Everything.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Karen looked at me.

“Because I thought I could use it against him if I needed to.””

I stared.

“You recorded it?””

She nodded.

“But before I could leave, Daniel came outside.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did he do?””

Karen looked terrified.

“He told me if I called anyone, he would tell you I was the reason your marriage failed.””

I almost laughed.

It was so cruel.

So calculated.

He knew exactly what would hurt.

“He knew you would believe him?””

Karen looked down.

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

Daniel knew both of us.

He knew our weaknesses.

He knew how to control us.

Detective Harris examined the phone.

“Is the recording still here?””

Karen nodded.

“Yes.””

He pressed play.

At first, there was nothing.

Wind.

Cars passing.

Then voices.

Daniel.

Evelyn.

And then…

A third voice.

My body froze.

Because it was not Karen.

It was someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

The recording continued.

Daniel said something that made Detective Harris immediately stop.

“What?”” I asked.

The detective looked at me.

His face was pale.

“Mrs. Carter…”

He replayed the last few seconds.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

Giving instructions.

I knew that voice.

Because I had heard it before.

At my wedding.

In my home.

At family gatherings.

It belonged to someone who had smiled at me while secretly helping destroy my life.

Detective Harris looked up.

“Who is Michael Carter?””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Michael.

Daniel’s older brother.

The man everyone called the successful one.

The man who had given the speech at our wedding.

The man who had hugged me and said, “Welcome to the family.””

I looked at the recording.

At my sister.

At the detective.

And suddenly I understood.

Daniel and Evelyn had never been trying to hide what they did.

They had been confident because they believed they had enough people on their side.

My family had not fallen apart because of one cruel man.

It had been built around a secret.

And now that secret was starting to come apart.

Detective Harris picked up his phone.

“We need to locate Michael Carter immediately.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because according to this recording…”

May you like

He paused.

“…he was the one who told them what to do next.””
