Chapter 8: The Recording Robert Left Behind

Robert Hale's death changed everything.

By noon, the news had spread through the business community.

The official statement described it as an apparent accident at his private residence.

But Daniel didn't believe it.

Neither did Andrew.

And judging by Marcus's expression, neither did my husband.

We met Eleanor Price at a small law office in Connecticut that afternoon.

She was seventy-six, with silver hair, sharp eyes, and a voice that sounded like it had spent a lifetime refusing to be intimidated.

When I entered her office, she stood immediately.

“Denise Bennett.””

I nodded.

“Mrs. Price.””

She studied my face.

“You look exactly like Margaret.””

I swallowed.

“Did you know my mother well?””

Eleanor gestured toward the chairs.

“Sit down. There's a great deal you need to understand.””

Andrew sat beside me.

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

Marcus had refused to come.

He claimed he needed to speak with his attorney.

I hadn't argued.

Eleanor opened a locked drawer and removed an old leather folder.

“Your mother came to me shortly before she died,” she began.

“She was frightened.””

“Of Edward?””

“Of Edward, yes. But also of someone else.””

“Who?””

Eleanor looked at Andrew.

“Your brother.””

Andrew stiffened.

“Me?””

“Not you personally. She was afraid Edward would use you to destroy the relationship between her and Richard.””

I frowned.

“Why would Edward want that?””

Eleanor took out a handwritten letter.

“Because your mother discovered that Edward had been using her signature to obtain loans against several properties.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Do you have proof?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Your mother brought me copies of the original documents. She believed Edward had been stealing from Richard for years.””

I stared at the letter.

“Why didn't my father go to the police?””

“Because Edward threatened to reveal Andrew's existence and accuse Margaret of abandoning her child.””

Andrew lowered his head.

Eleanor continued.

“Your father believed that if the scandal became public, Edward would use it to gain custody of Andrew. He was terrified of losing another child.””

I looked at my brother.

He was staring at his hands.

For twenty years, he had grown up believing his mother had abandoned him.

Meanwhile, I had grown up believing I had lost the only mother I would ever have.

Two children.

One lie.

And one family determined to keep it alive.

“What happened to the original documents?”” I asked.

Eleanor opened the folder.

“Your mother gave them to me for safekeeping. But before she died, she asked me to return them to Richard.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Eleanor's expression changed.

“Because Richard came to me three days before his death and told me someone had broken into his office.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Did he identify the person?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Marcus Carter.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Are you certain?””

“I saw him myself.””

She looked directly at me.

“Your father told me that Marcus had taken a document from the office. A document that could prove Edward had stolen money from your family.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Do you still have the original?””

Eleanor nodded.

She reached into the folder and placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“Your father gave me this. He told me not to open it unless Denise and Andrew came together.””

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Beside it was Andrew's.

We looked at each other.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten statement from my father.

My children,

If you are reading this together, then perhaps I finally succeeded in bringing you home.

I began to cry.

Andrew placed his hand over mine.

I continued.

I failed both of you in ways I will never be able to repair. I allowed fear to make decisions for me. I thought I could protect you by keeping you apart.

I was wrong.

Edward Carter stole my son. Marcus Carter tried to steal my daughter. And Robert Hale helped them both.

My eyes moved down the page.

But the greatest betrayal was not the money.

It was what happened to Margaret.

I stopped.

“Mrs. Price, what does this mean?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Your father believed your mother had been poisoned.””

The room fell silent.

Andrew slowly stood.

“Poisoned?””

Eleanor nodded.

“She became ill very suddenly. The doctors initially believed it was a rare infection. But your father later discovered that her medical records had been altered.””

My hands began shaking.

“Who altered them?””

“We never proved it.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Did Richard have evidence?””

Eleanor reached into another folder.

“He left a recording.””

I looked up.

“Another one?””

She nodded.

“This one was made approximately six months before his death.””

She placed a small digital recorder on the table.

I pressed play.

My father's voice filled the room.

“Margaret knew something. She discovered that Edward was using the properties to secure loans he had no intention of repaying.””

He paused.

“She confronted him. Two weeks later, she became ill.””

I covered my mouth.

“I don't know whether Edward was responsible. I never found enough evidence. But I know that Marcus visited Margaret in the hospital the day before she died.””

Andrew looked horrified.

“Marcus?””

My father's voice continued.

“He told me he was there to offer support. But when I asked Margaret what they discussed, she became frightened.””

The recording crackled.

Then my father said something that made Daniel sit forward.

“Margaret told me Marcus had offered her a deal. He wanted her to sign over her interest in Riverside. In exchange, he promised to reveal where Andrew was being kept.””

Andrew gripped the table.

“He knew where I was?””

“Yes,” my father said in the recording.

“And he used that knowledge against her.””

I closed my eyes.

The recording ended.

For a long moment, the only sound was the ticking clock on Eleanor's wall.

Then Andrew spoke.

“I need to know what happened to my mother.””

Eleanor nodded.

“I have something else.””

She opened a small drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

“This was delivered to my office two weeks ago. The sender asked me to give it to Denise if anything happened to Robert Hale.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who sent it?””

“I don't know.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a USB drive and a handwritten note.

The truth about Richard Bennett's death is on this recording. Don't let Marcus destroy it.

Daniel immediately took the USB drive.

“We'll make a forensic copy before playing it.””

Eleanor nodded.

While Daniel examined the device, Andrew looked at me.

“Denise, I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“I met Marcus because he promised he could help me find the truth about our mother.””

I waited.

“He told me Edward had kept all the original records. He said if I helped him obtain the Riverside property, he would give me the documents.””

I stared at him.

“You agreed?””

“I was desperate.””

“Andrew, that property belonged to our father.””

“I know.””

“Then why would you help him?””

Andrew's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I spent twenty years believing our mother didn't want me. I thought if I could finally understand why she gave me away, I might stop feeling like something was wrong with me.””

I reached across the table and took his hand.

“Nothing was wrong with you.””

He looked away.

“I should have come to you first.””

“Yes,” I whispered.

“You should have.””

Daniel interrupted.

“The USB contains three video files and one audio recording.””

He turned his laptop toward us.

The first video showed Robert Hale sitting in a dimly lit office.

He looked directly into the camera.

“My name is Robert Hale. If you're watching this, there's a good chance I'm no longer alive.””

I felt a chill.

Robert continued.

“I participated in a plan to transfer the Riverside property without Denise Bennett's knowledge. I did it because Edward Carter promised me financial security.””

He swallowed.

“But there is something Denise needs to know. Marcus was not the person who created the plan.””

Daniel paused the video.

I stared at the screen.

“Who did?””

Daniel pressed play again.

Robert leaned closer to the camera.

“The plan began with Richard Bennett himself.””

I couldn't breathe.

Robert continued.

“Your father knew that Riverside contained something worth far more than the property itself. He created a secret trust to protect it. And when Edward discovered what was hidden beneath that building, he decided he wanted it.””

Robert glanced nervously toward the door.

Then he whispered:

“But Richard had already moved the most important part of the trust into Denise's name.””

The video suddenly froze.

Daniel frowned.

“What happened?””

The screen went black.

A message appeared.

*FILE DAMAGED.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Can you recover it?””

“Possibly.””

Andrew stood.

“There was another file, wasn't there?””

Daniel nodded.

He opened the audio recording.

A man's voice emerged.

It wasn't Robert.

It wasn't my father.

It was Marcus.

And he was speaking to someone whose voice I recognized immediately.

My husband said:

“Once Denise is gone, everything will belong to us.””

The other man laughed.

Then he replied:

“That's what you said about her mother.””

May you like

My blood turned cold.

Because the voice belonged to Edward Carter.
