Chapter 4: My Father's Final Recording

“Whatever you hear, remember that your father wasn't telling you the whole truth either.””

Marcus's words followed me upstairs.

I closed the bedroom door and turned the lock.

For several seconds, I stood in the middle of the room, staring at the flash drive Daniel had given me.

My father's final instructions.

I had spent two years believing I knew everything about the man who raised me. He had been stubborn, protective, and sometimes painfully secretive, but he had never given me a reason to question his love.

Now Marcus was suggesting that my father had hidden something from me.

I sat at the edge of the bed and opened Daniel's email.

The audio file was labeled:

*For Denise — Play Only When Necessary.*

My fingers trembled as I pressed play.

A familiar voice filled the bedroom.

“Denise, sweetheart. If you're hearing this, something has gone terribly wrong.””

I covered my mouth.

It was my father.

His voice was weaker than I remembered, but unmistakable.

“I wish I could have told you everything while I was alive. I wanted you to have a happy marriage. I wanted you to believe that the man you chose was worthy of you.””

There was a pause.

Then he continued.

“But I discovered something about Marcus shortly after your wedding. Something I hoped was a misunderstanding.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you discover?”” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“Before I became ill, I discovered that Marcus had approached a private lender using documents connected to our family properties. He claimed he had authority to secure a loan against one of the buildings.””

I sat up.

My father coughed.

“I confronted him. He told me it was a mistake. He said he was trying to impress me and prove himself. I wanted to believe him.””

Another pause.

“But I later discovered that he had been discussing a much larger transaction with someone I trusted.””

The audio crackled.

I leaned closer.

“His name is Robert Hale.””

I frowned.

Robert Hale.

The name sounded familiar.

My father continued.

“Robert has been my business associate for almost twenty years. I trusted him with confidential property negotiations. I never imagined he would help Marcus.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

Have you listened to the recording?

I typed:

Who is Robert Hale?

His reply came almost immediately.

Your father's former business partner. I'll explain tomorrow.

I returned to the recording.

“Denise, there's something else. If Marcus has started moving the Riverside property, it means he has probably found the original agreement.””

My breath caught.

“What agreement?””

My father's voice became more urgent.

“The agreement I signed with Robert before your wedding. It concerns the true ownership of the land beneath the Riverside building.””

I stopped breathing for a moment.

The building was mine.

At least, that was what every document I had ever seen said.

My father continued.

“Marcus may believe he has found a way to take control of it. But there is a condition in the original contract that he doesn't know about.””

The recording ended with a soft click.

I sat motionless.

Then I played it again.

And again.

The same words.

The same warning.

The same unanswered question.

What condition?

I called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

“Denise?””

“What exactly did my father mean about the land beneath Riverside?””

There was silence.

“Did you listen to the entire recording?””

“Yes. Why didn't you tell me about Robert Hale?””

“Because I wanted to review the original agreement before discussing it.””

“Daniel, I don't need another person deciding what I should know.””

“I understand.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

He sighed.

“Your father and Robert formed a partnership to purchase the Riverside land twenty-two years ago. Your father later acquired the remaining interest, but there was a clause concerning a future transfer.””

“What kind of clause?””

“A right of first refusal. Under certain conditions, the property could only be transferred to a designated party.””

“Who?””

“Your father never told me the full details. The original document was kept in a private safe.””

I looked toward the bedroom door.

“Where is that safe?””

“At the Riverside office.””

“Then we'll go there tomorrow.””

“Denise, there's something you should know first.””

“What?””

“Robert Hale has been asking about you.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“He called me yesterday. He wanted to know whether Marcus was still managing your assets.””

“And what did you tell him?””

“That I was reviewing the accounts.””

Daniel paused.

“Denise, I think Robert knows your father left something important behind.””

I ended the call.

For a while, I sat quietly.

Then I heard footsteps outside the bedroom.

Marcus knocked.

“Denise. Open the door.””

I didn't answer.

“Come on. We need to talk.””

“Not tonight.””

His hand struck the door.

“Stop treating me like a criminal!””

I looked at the flash drive.

“You'll have to get used to people asking questions.””

He went quiet.

Then he spoke in a much softer voice.

“Your father wasn't the saint you think he was.””

I stood.

“Go downstairs, Marcus.””

“You don't know what he did.””

“Neither do you, apparently.””

His footsteps retreated.

I thought the conversation was over.

Then my phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from an unknown number.

Denise, my name is Robert Hale. Your father and I made a promise before he died. You need to meet me before Daniel tells you his version of the story.

A second message followed.

And whatever you do, don't let Marcus sell Riverside.

I stared at the screen.

How did Robert know I had listened to the recording?

And why was everyone suddenly afraid of a building my father had spent his life protecting?

I typed one question.

What did my father promise you?

His reply arrived seconds later.

To tell you who your husband really is.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

And why your marriage was never an accident.
