Chapter 7: The Child Who Held the Final Evidence
The message remained on my screen.
*But now that you have… I’ll have to find Leo.*
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Not because I was afraid for myself.
Not because I was afraid of what would happen next.
Because I saw Leo’s face in my mind.
A six-year-old boy sitting alone in a house full of people who claimed to love him.
A child who had already lost his mother.
A child who had spent months believing she might never return.
And now someone was threatening to take away the only person he had left.
I looked at Officer Miller.
“We need to go.””
He was already moving.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I turned.
“What do you mean no?””
Her eyes were full of fear.
“If they know where you are, they know where Leo is.””
“Exactly.””
“That’s why we can’t go straight back.””
I stared at her.
“My son is there.””
Her expression broke.
“I know.””
“Then what am I supposed to do?””
Emily stepped closer.
“You need to think.””
I almost snapped.
“Think?””
My voice echoed through the church.
“Your son is in danger.””
“And if you run into that house without a plan, you’re walking into a trap.””
The words stopped me.
Because she was right.
I hated that she was right.
Officer Miller checked his phone.
“No signal.””
Emily looked at him.
“Convenient.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You think I did this?””
“I think too many people have known too much for too long.””
“That includes you.””
Emily didn’t respond.
The tension between them was obvious.
A history I didn’t understand.
A trust that had already been broken.
I looked at both of them.
“Enough.””
They stopped.
“We don’t have time to decide who we hate.””
I pointed toward the watch.
“We need the rest of the file.””
Officer Miller nodded.
“The locked folder.””
“Yes.””
“Without the password, it could take hours.””
Emily looked at the device.
“Not if Leo knows.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She touched the watch gently.
“Leo was there.””
“He was six.””
“He was six, but he remembers things adults think he doesn’t.””
I thought about it.
The way Leo noticed everything.
The way he stayed quiet when people argued.
The way he remembered his mother’s exact words.
“What password would he know?””
Emily looked at me.
“Something only he and I would know.””
The drive back to the Grant house felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
The road passed in silence.
Trees.
Streetlights.
Empty sidewalks.
Everything looked normal.
That was the terrifying part.
The world continued as if nothing was happening.
As if a child wasn’t being hunted inside a beautiful house.
When we arrived, the front door was open.
My heart dropped.
Officer Miller immediately reached for his radio.
“Stay behind me.””
We entered carefully.
The living room was dark.
Too quiet.
“Leo?””
No answer.
I moved forward.
“Leo!””
A sound came from upstairs.
A small voice.
“Miss Ava?””
I ran.
I didn’t care about the danger.
I didn’t care about the instructions.
I ran.
Leo was standing outside his bedroom.
His eyes filled with tears the second he saw me.
I dropped to my knees.
“Are you okay?””
He nodded.
Then shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
I hugged him.
“Where is everyone?””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Grandma is in the kitchen.””
“And your dad?””
Leo hesitated.
“Someone came.””
My body went cold.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did they look like?””
Leo looked down.
“He had a black jacket.””
Officer Miller came upstairs.
“Did you see his face?””
Leo shook his head.
“But I heard him.””
“What did he say?””
Leo swallowed.
“He said he wanted the watch.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Leo whispered:
“He said my mom shouldn’t have trusted you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
We found Mrs. Grant in the kitchen.
She was sitting calmly at the table.
Almost peacefully.
Like she hadn’t just been accused of stealing evidence.
Like someone hadn’t threatened her grandson.
Officer Miller stepped forward.
“Where is Daniel?””
She looked at him.
“Out.””
“Where?””
“He left.””
“When?””
She smiled slightly.
“Shortly after you did.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew we were gone?””
Her smile disappeared.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“How?””
She looked at me.
“I know everything that happens in this house.””
The sentence was chilling.
Because I believed her.
Officer Miller moved closer.
“Who came here?””
Mrs. Grant looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
She shrugged.
“You’ve already decided what you believe.””
I stepped forward.
“Did you threaten my son?””
Her eyes snapped toward me.
For the first time, real emotion appeared.
Anger.
“Don’t call him your son.””
The words were quiet.
But cruel.
I stared at her.
“He trusts me.””
“He shouldn’t.””
“Why?””
She stood slowly.
“Because people like you always leave.””
The sentence confused me.
“What?””
“You think you’re different.””
She laughed softly.
“You think because you packed his lunches and read him stories, you understand him.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You don’t know what that family is.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
For a second, I thought she might.
Then she said:
“Ask Daniel what happened before Emily disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
But she had already turned away.
Daniel returned twenty minutes later.
Alone.
When he saw Emily standing in the living room, he stopped.
The shock on his face was real.
“I thought you were dead.””
Emily looked at him.
“I thought you wanted me to be.””
His face fell.
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
“I looked for you.””
“After how long?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because the answer was not good enough.
Leo ran to him.
“Dad.””
Daniel immediately hugged him.
And watching them almost broke something inside me.
Because despite everything…
Daniel loved his son.
That part was obvious.
But love wasn’t always enough.
Sometimes people hurt the people they loved because they were too afraid to face the truth.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“What did you find?””
She stared.
“You tell me.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“You heard the recording.””
His face changed.
“You saw it?””
“Yes.””
A long silence.
Then Daniel sat down.
“I didn’t know.””
Nobody moved.
“I swear.””
Emily’s voice was cold.
“You were standing right there.””
“I heard my mother talking.””
“And you did nothing.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was trying to understand.””
“Eight months later, you’re still trying?””
The pain in his face was impossible to ignore.
“I was scared.””
Emily looked away.
“Of what?””
He whispered:
“That if I admitted what my mother was capable of…”
He looked at Leo.
“I would have to admit I failed my son.””
Nobody spoke.
Later that night, we gathered in Daniel’s office.
The hidden file was still locked.
Leo sat beside me.
The watch was back on his wrist.
Emily sat across from him.
Mother and son.
Separated by months of fear.
But finally together.
“Leo,” Emily said gently.
“Do you remember a word your mother used when you were little?””
He frowned.
“A word?””
“A secret word.””
Leo thought.
Then his eyes widened.
“The blue bird.””
Emily smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
Officer Miller typed it.
The folder unlocked.
Everyone leaned closer.
Inside was one video.
Only one.
The date was the night Emily disappeared.
The recording began.
The camera showed Leo’s bedroom.
A younger Leo was sleeping.
Then Emily entered.
She looked terrified.
She sat beside him.
And whispered:
“Baby, if you ever see this…”
Leo grabbed my hand.
The video continued.
Emily looked directly at the camera.
Not at Leo.
At whoever would find it.
Then she said:
“Daniel didn’t take me.””
Everyone froze.
Emily continued:
“But he helped the person who did.””
Daniel stood.
“What?””
The video kept playing.
Emily’s voice shook.
“I know you think you’re protecting our family.””
A tear fell down her face.
“But you don’t understand.””
She looked behind her.
Like someone was coming.
“The person controlling everything isn’t Margaret.””
My heart stopped.
Emily whispered:
“It’s someone you trust.””
The screen flickered.
Then a figure appeared behind her.
A person entering the room.
A person whose face was finally visible.
Officer Miller stepped closer.
Daniel stopped breathing.
And I felt my blood run cold.
Because the person standing behind Emily in the video…
Was not a stranger.
It was someone we had all been listening to.
Someone who had been guiding the investigation.
Someone who had promised to find the truth.
The video froze on his face.
Officer Miller stared.
“No…”
Emily looked at him.
“You know him.””
He didn’t answer.
Because he did.
And then the video played one final second.
Emily whispered:
“Ava, if you’re watching this…”
Her eyes looked directly into the camera.
“Run.””
The screen went black.
And Officer Miller quietly said the name of the person in the video.
May you like
A name that changed everything.
“Daniel’s father.””
