Chapter 2: The Woman Who Left Me Her Secret
The photograph trembled in Officer Miller’s hand.
Not because of the paper.
Because of the name written on it.
Daniel Grant stared at the picture like he was seeing a ghost.
“Where did you get this?”” he asked.
His voice didn’t sound like the same man who had stood silently behind his mother while I was accused of hurting his son.
It sounded scared.
The officer looked at him carefully.
“Mr. Grant, I asked if you know this woman.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
Nobody moved.
Even Mrs. Grant stopped pretending to cry.
The porch became so quiet that I could hear the wind moving through the trees behind the house.
Leo held my hand tighter.
“Dad?””
Daniel looked at his son.
Then at the photograph.
Then away.
“She’s my wife.””
My stomach dropped.
I knew Leo’s mother was missing.
Everyone in town knew.
Her face had been on posters around Boston for months.
Emily Grant.
A woman who disappeared without leaving behind a trace.
A woman everyone believed had abandoned her family.
But the look on Daniel’s face told me something was wrong.
Not sadness.
Not relief.
Fear.
Officer Miller turned the photograph over again.
“And why would your missing wife write that Ava knows where she’s been?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
His silence was louder than any confession.
Mrs. Grant suddenly stood.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at her.
She forced a laugh.
“Emily was unstable. She was confused. She probably wrote something random because she didn’t know what she was doing.””
Leo looked up at her.
“My mom wasn’t confused.””
Mrs. Grant’s expression hardened.
“Leo, adults are talking.””
“No.””
The little boy’s voice surprised everyone.
He stepped forward.
“You always say that when you don’t want me to talk.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
Officer Miller noticed.
“Mr. Grant, I need everyone inside the house.””
Mrs. Grant immediately shook her head.
“No. This woman attacked my grandson.””
Officer Miller looked at the camera watch.
“We have a recording that shows otherwise.””
Mrs. Grant’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The confidence disappeared.
She looked at the watch like she wanted to crush it.
Then she looked at me.
And I knew.
Whatever was happening inside that house was much bigger than one accusation.
I had walked into something I didn’t understand.
And somehow, I was standing in the middle of it.
Two hours later, I sat in the living room with an ice pack pressed against my arm.
The police had taken statements.
The ambulance had checked my injury.
The house that once felt familiar now felt like a courtroom.
Every piece of furniture looked different.
Every photograph on the wall felt like it was hiding something.
Officer Miller sat across from me.
“Ava, I need you to explain something.””
I nodded.
“Okay.””
“When did Emily Grant give you that envelope?””
I looked down.
“That morning.””
“Why?””
“She didn’t explain.””
“What did she say?””
I closed my eyes, remembering.
It had happened at 8:15 a.m.
I was helping Leo into the back seat of the car when I noticed a woman standing near the sidewalk.
At first, I thought she was a stranger.
Then she said my name.
“Ava.””
I turned.
And there she was.
Emily Grant.
Older than the photos online.
Tired.
Pale.
But alive.
My hands had frozen.
“Mrs. Grant?””
She looked over her shoulder.
Like she was afraid someone was following her.
“You have to listen to me.””
I stepped closer.
“Where have you been?””
She ignored the question.
“Is Leo safe with you?””
The question confused me.
“Of course he is.””
She looked relieved.
Then she reached into her coat and handed me the envelope.
“Keep this.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“Insurance.””
“For what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For the truth.””
I remember looking toward the house.
“Mrs. Grant, you need to come inside. Daniel needs to know you’re here.””
Her expression changed immediately.
“No.””
The fear in her voice stopped me.
“No, Ava. You cannot tell Daniel.””
I didn’t understand.
“He’s your husband.””
She looked at me sadly.
“That’s why.””
Then she touched the camera watch on Leo’s wrist.
“Make sure he keeps that on.””
I looked at the watch.
“Why?””
“Because one day, he may need proof.””
Before I could ask another question, she stepped backward.
“Ava.””
“Yes?””
“If anything happens…”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Protect my son.””
Then she walked away.
And I never saw her again.
When I finished telling Officer Miller, he leaned back.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
I looked at him.
“Because I didn’t know if I should believe what happened.””
“That was Emily Grant.””
“I know that now.””
“You recognized her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why keep it secret?””
I stared at my injured arm.
Because the answer embarrassed me.
“Because I thought maybe she was trying to escape something that had nothing to do with me.””
Officer Miller was quiet.
Then he asked:
“Did you tell Daniel?””
“No.””
“Did you tell Mrs. Grant?””
“No.””
“Did you tell anyone?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He wrote something down.
Then he looked toward the hallway.
“Does Leo know his mother is alive?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because I knew the truth.
Leo had been waiting.
Every single day.
Waiting for someone to stop telling him she was gone.
“I think he always believed she would come back.””
Officer Miller looked sad.
“That’s a heavy thing for a six-year-old.””
Before I could respond, a small voice came from behind us.
“I knew she wasn’t gone.””
Leo stood in the doorway.
I hadn’t heard him walk in.
“Leo…”
He looked at me.
“My mom promised me she would come back.””
Officer Miller softened his voice.
“What did she tell you?””
Leo looked down.
“She said sometimes people have to hide when bad people are watching.””
The room went still.
I glanced at Daniel.
He looked away.
Later that night, I was packing my things.
I had no idea if I would return to work.
Part of me knew I couldn’t.
Not after what happened.
Not after seeing the way Daniel stood there.
But another part of me couldn’t leave Leo alone.
I folded my clothes into my suitcase when I heard a knock.
I opened the door.
Daniel stood there.
For the first time in two years, he looked like a stranger.
“I need to talk to you.””
I didn’t move.
“About what?””
“Emily.””
My hand tightened around the door.
“What about her?””
He looked down the hallway.
Then back at me.
“Did she tell you anything else?””
I studied his face.
“You mean besides asking me to protect your son?””
His expression changed.
“You knew she was scared.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
I almost laughed.
The anger rising inside me surprised even myself.
“You watched your mother hit me.””
His face fell.
“I know.””
“You watched her drag me out of this house.””
“I know.””
“And you said nothing.””
Daniel looked away.
“I was trying to understand.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You were choosing.””
He didn’t argue.
That hurt more.
After a moment, he said quietly:
“Emily wasn’t supposed to disappear.””
I crossed my arms.
“What does that mean?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“She found something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
“She stopped trusting me.””
The words hung between us.
“Why?””
Daniel looked toward Leo’s room.
Then whispered:
“Because she thought someone in this house was lying.””
A chill ran through me.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
“I found this in Emily’s things.””
I took it.
There was only one sentence written on it.
If anything happens to me, don’t trust the person who says they’re protecting Leo.
I looked up.
“Who was she talking about?””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward the staircase.
Toward the room where his mother was sleeping.
“I don’t know.””
A sound interrupted us.
A phone ringing.
Not Daniel’s.
Not mine.
Leo’s.
The camera watch.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at the hallway.
“Why is his watch receiving a call?””
Leo ran out holding his wrist.
The screen showed a number.
Unknown.
I felt my heart start racing.
Because the watch was not supposed to receive calls from strangers.
Leo answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through the tiny speaker.
A voice I recognized instantly.
A voice I had heard only once.
“Ava?””
My blood turned cold.
Emily Grant.
Leo looked at me.
“She’s here.””
Then the voice whispered:
“Don’t let Daniel find out where I am.””
The call ended.
May you like
And on the watch screen, one final message appeared.
*I know who hurt me.*
