Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed
Daniel didn’t know whether to trust the woman standing in front of him.
For years, he had believed he understood his own story.
He knew how he met Emily.
He knew how they fell in love.
He knew how Lily came into the world.
He knew how Emily died.
At least, he thought he did.
But now every memory had a shadow behind it.
Every moment had another version.
And the person who knew the truth was standing in front of him in a dusty storage facility, telling him that the worst night of his life wasn’t what he thought it was.
“Who are you?”” Daniel asked again.
The woman looked nervous.
“My name is Olivia Hayes.””
“That doesn’t tell me anything.””
She nodded slowly.
“I know.””
Daniel held up Emily’s journal.
“You said you know what happened the night Lily was born.””
Olivia looked at the notebook.
“I do.””
“Then tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“Not here.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because some secrets are dangerous when the wrong people hear them.””
Daniel immediately thought of Claire.
“You mean her.””
Olivia didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
They sat in a small coffee shop fifteen minutes away from the storage unit.
Daniel barely touched his drink.
He was too focused on the woman across from him.
“Start from the beginning,” he said.
Olivia wrapped both hands around her cup.
“I worked at the hospital where Lily was born.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“What were you?””
“A nurse.””
Daniel studied her face.
“Why have I never heard of you?””
“Because I left shortly after.””
“Why?””
Olivia looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Afraid of what?””
She looked around the coffee shop before answering.
“Michael.””
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
Daniel felt it.
The fear.
The same fear Emily had written about.
“What did Michael do?””
Olivia took a breath.
“Michael wasn’t just someone from Emily’s past.””
Daniel waited.
“He was involved in something Emily discovered.””
“What?””
Olivia hesitated.
“She found out he had been lying about who he was.””
Daniel frowned.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning Michael wasn’t the man Emily thought she knew.””
Daniel looked confused.
“But why was he involved with her?””
“Because Emily was valuable to him.””
That answer made no sense.
“Valuable?””
Olivia nodded.
“She came from a family with money and influence.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Emily never cared about that.””
“I know.””
Olivia’s voice softened.
“That’s why Michael underestimated her.””
Daniel looked at the table.
“What does any of this have to do with Lily?””
Olivia reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this after Emily died.””
Daniel stared.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because I was told not to.””
“By who?””
Olivia looked at him.
“Claire.””
The answer felt like a punch.
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of Lily.
Not of Emily.
A photograph of Michael.
Standing beside a car.
Talking to someone.
Daniel looked closer.
His heart stopped.
The person standing with Michael was Claire.
But they weren’t arguing.
They weren’t strangers.
They looked comfortable.
Like they had done this before.
“How long did they know each other?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked up.
“But Emily knew.””
“Yes.””
“And she trusted Claire anyway?””
Olivia’s expression became sad.
“Emily wanted to believe people could change.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“She was wrong.””
Olivia didn’t answer.
When Daniel returned home, he didn’t tell anyone about Olivia.
Not yet.
He needed to think.
He needed to separate facts from emotions.
But when he walked through the front door, he immediately knew something was wrong.
The house was too quiet.
“Lily?””
No answer.
His heart jumped.
He rushed upstairs.
Her bedroom door was open.
Empty.
“Lily?””
Then he heard her voice.
From the backyard.
He found her sitting near the garden with Noah.
She was holding a small box.
Daniel walked over.
“What happened?””
Noah looked up.
“She found this in her closet.””
Daniel sat beside them.
“What is it?””
Lily opened the box.
Inside were old drawings.
Photographs.
Small childhood memories.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“These are yours.””
Lily nodded.
“I was looking for my old coloring books.””
She picked up one picture.
It showed three people holding hands.
Emily.
Daniel.
Lily.
Then she looked at him.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Did Mommy know Claire?””
Daniel froze.
The question was too direct.
“Why do you ask?””
“Because Claire told me something.””
His stomach tightened.
“What?””
Lily looked down.
“She said Mommy didn’t want me.””
Daniel felt anger rise instantly.
But he forced himself to stay calm.
“When did she say that?””
“Before.””
“Before what?””
“Before you came downstairs that morning.””
Daniel looked at Noah.
Noah’s face changed.
“What exactly did she say?””
Lily hugged the box.
“She said if Mommy really loved me, she would have stayed.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
He felt sick.
Because Claire wasn’t just hurting Lily in the present.
She was using Lily’s deepest wound against her.
“Sweetheart,” Daniel said gently.
“Yes?””
“Your mother loved you more than anything.””
Lily looked at him.
“Then why did she leave?””
That question had no easy answer.
But Daniel knew one thing.
Emily didn’t choose to leave.
She fought to stay.
And now he finally knew that.
That night, Daniel confronted Claire again.
She was in the kitchen.
The same kitchen where everything had started.
She looked up when he entered.
“You’re late.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“I need to ask you something.””
Claire sighed.
“Another question?””
“Yes.””
She looked at him.
“What now?””
Daniel placed the photograph from Olivia on the counter.
Claire’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You know this picture.””
She didn’t speak.
“Claire.””
Her voice became quiet.
“Where did you get that?””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked away.
Daniel felt something break inside him.
“Were you working with Michael?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“Then why were you with him?””
Claire said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why did Emily write your name in her journal?””
Claire looked shocked.
“She did what?””
“You heard me.””
For the first time, fear replaced anger.
“Daniel, you need to stop digging.””
He stared.
“What?””
“You don’t know what you’re getting into.””
The words chilled him.
Not because they sounded like a threat.
Because they sounded like a warning.
“Is that supposed to scare me?””
“No.””
“Then what is it?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, some truths don’t fix things.””
“Some truths destroy them.””
“Yes.””
She whispered the word.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
Claire looked toward the stairs.
Toward Lily’s room.
Then she said something he never expected.
“Because Lily was never supposed to know.””
Daniel froze.
“What does that mean?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“Ask yourself why Emily never told you.””
“I know why.””
“Do you?””
Daniel stared.
“She trusted me.””
Claire shook her head slowly.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“She was protecting you.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“From what?””
Claire looked terrified.
“From the truth about what happened after Lily was born.””
Before Daniel could respond, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Both of them turned.
They ran toward the sound.
Noah was standing outside Lily’s bedroom.
His face was pale.
“What happened?””
Noah pointed inside.
The window was open.
The room had been searched.
Drawers were pulled out.
Books scattered across the floor.
Daniel rushed in.
“Lily?””
“She’s okay,” Noah said quickly.
“She’s downstairs with Maria.””
Daniel looked around.
Someone had been looking for something.
Something hidden.
Then he saw it.
On Lily’s bed.
A small white envelope.
His name was written on it.
Daniel picked it up.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
*“You’re looking in the wrong place. Ask Claire what happened the night Emily died.””*
Daniel stared at the message.
Then he slowly turned toward Claire.
Because for the first time, he realized something terrifying.
May you like
Claire wasn’t just hiding the truth.
She was afraid of someone else too.
