Chapter 6: The Truth Emily Tried to Leave Behind
Daniel didn’t sleep that night.
Not because he was searching for answers.
Because every answer he found created another question.
He sat alone in the living room, staring at the empty chair across from him.
Emily’s chair.
The chair she used to sit in while helping Lily with homework.
The chair where she drank tea every night after putting their daughter to bed.
The chair where Daniel had sat beside her during the final weeks of her illness, promising her everything would be okay.
Back then, he thought losing Emily was the hardest thing he would ever experience.
Now he wasn’t sure.
Because grief was painful.
But betrayal was different.
Grief took someone away.
Betrayal made you question everything they left behind.
At 3:17 in the morning, Daniel finally picked up his phone and called Rachel again.
She answered after two rings.
“Daniel?””
“I need you to tell me everything.””
Rachel was quiet.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised even him.
“I’m not sure I want to know. But I need to.””
A long pause followed.
Then Rachel sighed.
“Emily knew something was wrong before Lily was born.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What?””
“She found out Michael wasn’t the person he claimed to be.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Who was he?””
“He was someone from Emily’s past.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
Rachel sounded exhausted.
“Because Emily never gave us the whole story.””
Daniel looked at the photograph on the table.
Claire.
Michael.
Lily.
A secret family hidden behind his own.
“What did Emily tell you?””
“That Michael was dangerous.””
Daniel frowned.
“Dangerous how?””
Rachel hesitated.
“She didn’t explain.””
“Rachel.””
“I’m telling you what she told me.””
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“And Claire?””
“She knew.””
“So Claire knew Michael was dangerous?””
“Yes.””
The room felt colder.
“Then why would Emily ask Claire to protect Lily?””
Rachel’s voice became softer.
“Because Emily believed Claire was the only person who could keep Lily safe.””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Then why did Claire hurt her?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Because neither of them knew.
The next morning, Daniel found Noah in the kitchen.
His son was sitting at the table with a notebook open in front of him.
But he wasn’t writing.
He was thinking.
“You didn’t sleep either,” Daniel said.
Noah looked up.
“No.””
Daniel sat across from him.
“I owe you an apology.””
Noah looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For not listening.””
Noah looked down.
“Dad…”
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I should have noticed.””
Noah was quiet for a moment.
Then he said:
“I tried to tell you.””
Daniel swallowed.
“When?””
“Little things.””
“Like what?””
Noah closed the notebook.
“Lily stopped asking Claire for help.””
Daniel looked at him.
“She used to ask her everything. Homework. Clothes. Even stupid things like which color marker looked better.””
Noah’s voice lowered.
“Then she stopped.””
Daniel listened.
“She started waiting for Claire to leave before coming downstairs.””
A painful silence filled the room.
“She used to sing when she cooked with Maria,” Noah continued.
“Now she stays quiet.””
Daniel looked away.
Because he remembered.
He remembered all those moments.
He just never connected them.
“I thought she was adjusting.””
Noah shook his head.
“She wasn’t adjusting.””
He looked directly at his father.
“She was disappearing.””
That sentence stayed with Daniel.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
Lily hadn’t become difficult.
She had become smaller.
Later that morning, Daniel asked Claire to meet him.
Not as a husband.
Not as someone trying to save a marriage.
As a father.
She walked into the living room slowly.
“You wanted to talk?””
“Yes.””
She sat down.
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
Inside were copies of the documents from the hidden box.
Claire looked at them.
“You found those.””
“Yes.””
She didn’t deny it.
That was new.
Daniel noticed.
“Why were they hidden?””
Claire looked tired.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No. It’s incomplete.””
Claire looked at him.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
She laughed softly.
“The truth is complicated.””
“Then start somewhere.””
Claire looked at the floor.
“I met Emily when we were teenagers.””
Daniel listened.
“She was the kind of person everyone loved.””
A small smile appeared on Claire’s face.
“She was kind. She trusted people too easily.””
“And you?””
Claire looked up.
“I was jealous.””
The answer surprised him.
“Of Emily?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because everything seemed easy for her.””
Daniel frowned.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
Claire nodded.
“I know.””
She took a breath.
“When she got pregnant, Michael disappeared.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“And you helped her?””
“At first.””
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked away.
“I helped because I felt guilty.””
“Guilty for what?””
No answer.
Daniel waited.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because I knew where Michael was.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I knew he didn’t leave.””
“Then why didn’t you tell Emily?””
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Claire’s voice shook.
“Of what he would do.””
Daniel stood.
“You let Emily believe he abandoned her?””
“I thought keeping quiet would protect her.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“You protected yourself.””
Claire started crying.
“I was young.””
“And then?””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“You weren’t young when you came into my life.””
Claire looked away.
Daniel understood.
The secret didn’t end years ago.
It followed her.
All the way into their home.
That afternoon, Daniel drove to the old storage unit where Emily had kept her belongings before she died.
He had avoided opening it for years.
Too painful.
Too many memories.
But now he needed answers.
Inside were boxes filled with photographs, letters, and old journals.
He spent hours searching.
Then he found it.
A small blue notebook.
Emily’s handwriting was on the first page.
Daniel’s hands shook as he opened it.
The first entries were ordinary.
Pregnancy thoughts.
Baby names.
Dreams for Lily.
Then the tone changed.
One sentence caught his attention.
*“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””*
He kept reading.
*“Michael came back today.””*
Daniel stopped.
His heart raced.
*“He says he wants to meet Lily. I told him no.””*
Another page.
*“Claire knows. I don’t understand why she won’t tell me the truth.””*
Another.
*“Daniel loves Lily. More than anyone. That’s why I’m afraid.””*
Daniel frowned.
Why would Emily be afraid because he loved Lily?
He turned the page.
And there it was.
The answer.
*“If Daniel finds out Lily is not biologically his, I know he will still love her. But Michael knows exactly how to destroy people. He will use the truth to hurt everyone.””*
Daniel stopped breathing.
Emily had believed in him.
She knew.
She knew he would stay.
Then why hadn’t she told him?
He turned another page.
The final entry was dated three days before Emily’s death.
*“I found proof. The truth is not about Lily’s father. It’s about why Michael came back.””*
Daniel’s hands tightened.
Below it was one final line.
*“Claire knows what happened the night Lily was born.””*
A noise came from behind him.
Daniel quickly turned.
The storage unit door was open.
He hadn’t left it that way.
A woman stood outside.
Not Claire.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
Someone he had never seen before.
She looked directly at the notebook in his hands.
Then she said:
“Daniel Carter?””
He stood.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked frightened.
“My name is Olivia.””
“Why are you here?””
She glanced around.
Then whispered:
“Because if you’re reading Emily’s journal, it means Claire failed to keep the secret hidden.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“What secret?””
Olivia stepped closer.
“The truth about the night Lily was born.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What happened that night?””
Olivia looked toward the street.
Then back at him.
“Your daughter wasn’t the only person who almost died.””
She lowered her voice.
“Emily did too.””
May you like
A pause.
“And someone in your family knows why.””
