Chapter 9: The Brother Who Stole My Life

I couldn't stop looking at the DNA report.

For twenty-four years, I had believed my first daughter was dead.

Then I had discovered she was alive.

Then I had learned she was supposedly Marcus's child.

Now I was being told she was mine.

And the second child, Nia, was Marcus's.

The same man had fathered my wife’s children while I had raised them as my own.

But Emily was different.

Emily was my biological daughter.

My child.

The baby I had once held in my imagination for twenty-four years.

I looked at her.

“Are you certain?””

Emily nodded.

“I had an independent test done. Then I asked for the original hospital samples to be reviewed.””

“Why would the first report say Marcus was your father?””

She opened another folder.

“Because the original samples were switched.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was staring at the floor.

“You did this?””

He didn't answer.

“Marcus!””

He finally looked up.

“Yes.””

The word came out almost inaudibly.

I stepped toward him.

“You changed the DNA results?””

“I didn't do it alone.””

“Who helped you?””

He glanced toward Daniel.

The attorney slowly stood.

“Arthur, I think it's important that we separate the medical errors from the family decisions.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Daniel adjusted his jacket.

“I discovered irregularities when I reviewed the trust documents.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was bound by confidentiality.””

“Confidentiality?””

I laughed.

“You've spent years helping my family hide the truth, and now you want to discuss professional obligations?””

Daniel placed his hands on the table.

“I have evidence that the original reports were manipulated by someone outside the hospital.””

“Who?””

He looked at Marcus.

My brother closed his eyes.

“Me,” he whispered.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you'd find out.””

“Find out what? That you slept with my wife? That you fathered my children? That you gave away babies?””

He flinched.

“I knew you would never forgive me.””

I stepped closer.

“You made that decision for me.””

“I know.””

“You stole twenty-four years from Emily.””

“I know.””

“You made Nia believe she was your niece.””

His voice cracked.

“I know.””

“And you let Jordan and Maya grow up believing I was their biological father.””

Marcus finally looked at me.

“But you were their father.””

I struck the table with my palm.

“Don't use that word to excuse what you did!””

The room fell silent.

Emily stood beside Maya.

Nia was sitting on the sofa, staring at the photograph of the twins.

Jordan remained near the doorway.

I looked at my brother.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus sat down.

For the first time, he stopped trying to defend himself.

He explained that the affair with Claire had started before my first daughter was born.

My father had discovered it.

Rather than confront me, he had arranged a private agreement with Marcus and Claire.

He believed that if the truth became public, it would destroy our family business and damage the Reed name.

The twins were born during a period when my father controlled much of the family's money.

He arranged for Emily to be adopted by the Carter family.

Nia was placed with Helen Carter under a private guardianship arrangement, then returned to Claire and me under a different set of records.

The arrangement was supposed to be temporary.

But when my father died, Marcus and Claire continued hiding everything.

Jordan was born first.

Then Maya.

Then Nia.

I listened without interrupting.

Every explanation sounded worse than the one before it.

Finally, I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

“Why did you let me raise them?””

Marcus looked up.

“Because you loved them.””

I stared at him.

“That was your reason?””

“No. It was also because I was a coward.””

He swallowed.

“I couldn't give them the life you could. I didn't have the patience. I didn't have the stability.

I was selfish, Arthur. I wanted the children to have everything, but I didn't want the responsibility of being exposed.””

Claire began crying.

Marcus continued.

“I watched you become the father I should have been.””

I looked at him.

“You watched me sit beside Jordan's bed when he had surgery.””

He nodded.

“You watched me teach Maya to ride her bicycle.””

Another nod.

“You watched me hold Nia when she had nightmares.””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“And every time you came to my house, you knew.””

He couldn't answer.

I stepped back.

I felt anger, but beneath it was something much worse.

Grief.

Not grief for the children.

Grief for the brother I thought I had.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“There is another issue we need to address.””

I turned toward him.

“What now?””

He opened the trust document.

“Your father established a family trust that would transfer control of the Reed properties and investments to the next generation.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Your father included a clause requiring the beneficiaries to be biologically related to the Reed family.””

I looked at the children.

“That's why you changed the records?””

Daniel nodded.

“Marcus believed that if his biological children were officially recognized as your children, they would qualify as beneficiaries.””

I looked at my brother.

“So all of this was about money?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not all of it.””

“How much?””

Daniel answered.

“Approximately twelve million dollars in property, investments, and business shares.””

The number hung in the air.

Twelve million.

I looked at Claire.

“Were you involved in changing the trust?””

She nodded.

“I signed the amendment.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus said the children deserved their inheritance.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Then why did you hide the fact that they were his?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because if the truth came out, the trust would freeze.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Which is exactly what happened when the irregularities were discovered.””

He turned another page.

“However, there is something else. The trust includes a clause that allows the biological beneficiaries to challenge any transfer made through fraudulent documentation.””

I looked at him.

“What happens then?””

“The person responsible could lose control of the assets and face civil liability.””

Marcus suddenly stood.

“Daniel, don't.””

The attorney looked at him.

“You asked me to prepare the documents. I'm explaining the consequences.””

I turned toward my brother.

“Were you planning to take the money?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I was trying to secure the children's future.””

“By stealing mine?””

He said nothing.

Then Emily spoke.

“I don't want the money.””

Everyone looked at her.

She closed her folder.

“I didn't come here for an inheritance. I came because I wanted to know why my biological father never looked for me.””

She looked at me.

“And now I know you didn't know I existed.””

My throat tightened.

“I would have searched for you.””

“I believe you.””

She looked toward Claire.

“But someone made sure you couldn't.””

Claire began sobbing.

Emily turned toward Nia.

“I also want my sister to know that none of this was her fault.””

Nia stood.

“I'm sorry.””

Emily shook her head.

“You don't owe me an apology.””

Then she looked at Jordan and Maya.

“Neither do you.””

Jordan approached her.

“Does this mean we're really family?””

Emily smiled sadly.

“We always were.””

For a moment, the room felt almost peaceful.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly turned toward me.

“Arthur, the bank has just frozen the trust accounts.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

He glanced at Marcus.

“Someone submitted a formal challenge this morning.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Your brother.””

I turned toward Marcus.

He shook his head.

“I didn't submit anything.””

Daniel showed me the filing.

It had been submitted using Marcus's digital signature.

But the accompanying statement contained something even more disturbing.

It accused me of knowingly concealing the children's biological identities to gain control of the inheritance.

I looked at the document.

“That isn't true.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

Then he pointed to the final page.

There was a witness signature.

*Claire Reed.*

My wife had signed a sworn statement claiming I had known about the affair and the children's paternity for years.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She began crying.

“I didn't write that.””

“But you signed it.””

“I was told it was necessary to protect the children.””

“By whom?””

She looked toward Marcus.

He shook his head.

Then Emily stepped forward and pointed at the filing number.

“Wait.””

She took the document from Daniel.

“I've seen this number before.””

She opened her phone and searched through an old email.

A moment later, she turned the screen toward us.

The email was from Helen Carter, the woman who had arranged Nia's guardianship.

It had been sent to Emily's adoptive father shortly before his death.

The subject line read:

*IF THE REED FAMILY EVER DISCOVERS THE TWINS, CONTACT THIS PERSON.*

Beneath it was a name.

Not Marcus.

Not Claire.

Not Daniel.

It was the name of someone who had been sitting quietly in our house for years.

Someone who had never once been accused.

Someone who had been helping us search for the truth.

I looked at the name.

Then I looked toward the staircase.

And suddenly, I understood why Nia had been so afraid to speak when this nightmare began.

May you like

Because the person behind the final betrayal wasn't my brother.

It was someone much closer to home.
