Chapter 3: The Question Nobody Wanted Me to Ask
I stood in Maya's bedroom holding a legal document that seemed to turn my entire family into strangers.
Jordan watched me carefully.
Nia had gone silent.
Downstairs, I could hear Claire moving around the kitchen. A cabinet opened. A glass touched the counter.
Ordinary household sounds.
They felt almost offensive.
“Dad,” Jordan said quietly, “you need to ask Mom about the trust.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn't you show me this yesterday?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked toward Maya's bedroom door.
“Of what would happen if I was right.””
I folded the document and placed it inside my jacket.
“Stay here.””
I walked downstairs alone.
Claire was standing beside the kitchen island, pouring water into a glass.
Maya sat at the table, staring at her hands.
When she saw me, she immediately looked away.
“Where are the others?”” Claire asked.
“Upstairs.””
She nodded.
“Good. We need to talk.””
“Yes,” I replied.
“We do.””
I placed the legal document on the counter.
Claire's glass stopped halfway to her mouth.
“What is that?””
“You tell me.””
She looked down.
The color drained from her face.
“Where did you get this?””
“Your daughter’s bedroom.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Arthur…”
“Why is your name on a family trust amendment with my brother's?””
She set down the glass.
“It's complicated.””
“Then simplify it.””
“It's not what you think.””
“That's becoming a familiar sentence in this house.””
Maya suddenly stood.
“Mom, don't.””
Claire turned toward her.
“Sweetheart, go upstairs.””
“No.””
“Maya.””
“I said no!””
Her voice cracked.
I looked between them.
“Why is everybody so afraid of talking?””
Claire pressed her fingertips against her forehead.
“Because you don't understand what you're asking.””
“Then help me understand.””
She looked at the document again.
“Marcus was trying to protect the children.””
“From what?””
“From losing everything.””
I stared at her.
“Losing what?””
“Their future. Their inheritance. Their security.””
“Our children have a father.””
Claire flinched.
“I know that.””
“Then why does this document question their biological relationship to me?””
Silence.
The refrigerator hummed behind us.
Maya began crying.
Claire reached for her.
But Maya stepped away.
That small movement told me more than any explanation could have.
I pulled out a chair and sat down.
“Claire, I want the truth. Not another excuse. Not another secret. The truth.””
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she whispered, “Ten years ago, when Maya was in the hospital, there was a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“The hospital records.””
“What about them?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Some of the medical information didn't match.””
I stared at her.
“What information?””
She shook her head.
“It's not something I can explain in a few sentences.””
“Try.””
She looked toward Maya.
Then she spoke so quietly I almost missed it.
“Marcus helped us get through that night.””
I leaned forward.
“How?””
“He arranged the hospital transfer. He paid some expenses. He handled things while you were away.””
“I know that. I thanked him.””
“He also helped us with a private medical test.””
My stomach tightened.
“What test?””
Claire began crying.
Maya covered her mouth.
Before my wife could answer, someone knocked at the front door.
Three sharp knocks.
I looked toward the hallway.
Claire went completely still.
Maya whispered, “He's here.””
I stood.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
I walked to the front door and looked through the glass.
A man stood on the porch holding a leather briefcase.
I recognized him.
It was Daniel Foster, the attorney who had handled our estate planning for years.
But he wasn't alone.
Marcus stood beside him.
My younger brother looked directly at the door.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Marcus lifted his hand.
He wasn't waving.
He was holding another envelope.
I opened the door.
“What are you doing here?””
Marcus glanced past me toward the kitchen.
“Arthur. We need to talk.””
“You've had plenty of opportunities to talk.””
His jaw tightened.
“I know.””
“Why are you meeting my daughter behind my back?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because she asked me to.””
I felt a surge of anger.
“She is sixteen!””
“I know how old she is.””
“Then why are you putting her in the middle of whatever this is?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Arthur, perhaps we should sit down before making accusations.””
I turned toward him.
“You're involved, too?””
He adjusted his briefcase.
“I prepared the trust amendment.””
“Under whose instructions?””
He hesitated.
“Your wife and your brother.””
I laughed once.
It was the only sound I could make.
Marcus stepped inside.
“Arthur, please. Let me explain.””
“No. You can start by telling me why you paid $85,000 into your own account after Maya was hospitalized.””
His face changed.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Where did you see that?”” Marcus asked.
“In my daughter's bedroom.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
For the first time in my life, my younger brother looked genuinely ashamed.
“I was hoping she hadn't found that.””
“Why?””
He put the envelope on the table.
“Because I didn't want you to discover the truth this way.””
I picked it up.
“What truth?””
Marcus looked toward Claire.
She was standing in the kitchen doorway, crying silently.
Then he looked at Maya.
My daughter had come downstairs without me noticing.
She was standing behind her mother.
Her hands were trembling.
Marcus finally faced me.
“Arthur, the hospital made a mistake ten years ago. A mistake that changed more than one person's life.””
“What does that have to do with me?””
He swallowed.
“Everything.””
He opened the envelope and removed a medical report.
I recognized the hospital logo.
At the top was Maya's name.
Beneath it was a section labeled *PATERNITY TEST RESULTS*.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then I stopped.
The first line stated that I was not Maya's biological father.
For several seconds, the room disappeared.
I heard Claire make a small sound behind me.
I looked at her.
“Is this real?””
She couldn't answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Arthur, listen to me. The test was done because of a medical emergency. Nobody expected—”
“Whose name is on the biological father's line?””
Marcus's expression crumpled.
He looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
Before he could speak, Maya suddenly stepped forward.
“Dad, please don't let him finish.””
I turned toward my daughter.
“Why?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Because that isn't the whole story.””
Marcus looked alarmed.
“Maya, stop.””
But she continued.
“Mom told me something different.””
Claire whispered, “Maya…”
My daughter looked straight at me.
“The test says you're not my biological father. But Uncle Marcus isn't my father either.””
Nobody moved.
I stared at her.
“Then who is?””
Maya reached into her pocket and pulled out a second folded paper.
It was a copy of a document I had never seen before.
She placed it beside the medical report.
“That's what Uncle Marcus has been trying to tell you.””
I looked down.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
A name that had been part of our family for eighteen years.
And suddenly, I understood why Jordan had looked relieved when he saw Marcus on the security footage.
May you like
Because my son hadn't been afraid of the truth.
He had been waiting for someone to finally uncover it.
