Chapter 7: The Recording That Destroyed Their Perfect Lie

The video kept playing.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t blink.

I could only stare at the screen and listen to the voices of the people who had spent years pretending to love me.

Mark sat at the kitchen table in the recording.

Brenda was beside him.

And Ofelia stood near the window of my own house.

My house.

The same house where she drank coffee every morning.

The same house where she complained that I didn’t make enough effort as a wife.

The same house where she smiled at me while helping plan my destruction.

“Once Laura is out of the way, Crestview will finally belong to us,” Ofelia said.

The sentence replayed in my mind.

Not because it shocked me.

Because it explained everything.

The missing documents.

The fake signatures.

The sudden changes at the company.

The way Mark slowly pushed me away.

It was never random.

It was a plan.

I watched the video until the end.

Every second felt like another piece of my life being ripped apart.

Mark talked about investors.

Brenda talked about timing.

Ofelia talked about my father.

“He was always suspicious,” she said in the recording.

“That old man made things harder than they needed to be.””

My hands trembled.

My father.

Even after death, they spoke about him with disrespect.

“He left protections in place,” Mark replied.

Brenda frowned.

“Can you get around them?””

Mark smiled.

The same smile I had seen thousands of times.

The smile I once loved.

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“Laura trusts me.””

The room went silent.

Then Ofelia laughed.

“She always has.””

I closed the laptop.

I couldn’t hear anymore.

Not because I didn’t want the truth.

Because I had enough.

I sat there in the darkness for nearly an hour.

Eventually, I heard a knock on the door.

“Laura?””

Mark.

Of course.

The man responsible for my pain was now standing outside my room like he was the victim.

“Go away.””

A pause.

Then his voice softened.

“Please.””

That word used to affect me.

Not anymore.

“You don’t get to ask me for anything.””

“Laura, let me explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Explain what?””

Silence.

“The video?””

Another silence.

And that was all I needed.

He knew.

“You watched it.””

“Yes.””

I heard him breathe out.

“Then you need to understand the context.””

Context.

That word almost made me angry enough to open the door.

Instead, I stayed still.

“My father helped you build Crestview.””

“Yes.””

“He believed in you.””

“Yes.””

“He trusted you.””

A pause.

“Laura…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“But I want you to answer one question.””

“What?””

“Did you ever love me?””

The silence lasted too long.

That was my answer.

Finally, he whispered:

“Yes.””

But it sounded like a lie.

I opened the door.

Mark stood there.

The man I married.

The man I built a life with.

The man who had destroyed it.

“You loved me?””

“Yes.””

“Then how could you do this?””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked ashamed.

“I felt invisible.””

I stared.

Invisible.

That was his excuse.

“You felt invisible?””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Mark, do you know how many nights I stayed awake working on payroll because we couldn’t afford an accountant?””

He looked away.

“Do you know how many times I missed family events because the company needed me?””

Silence.

“Do you know how many times I defended you when people said you were too ambitious?””

His jaw tightened.

“I built that company with you.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

I pointed toward the laptop.

“You started believing the company existed because of you.””

His expression hardened.

“And what about me?””

“What about you?””

“You stopped seeing me as your husband.””

The words shocked me.

Not because they were true.

Because he actually believed them.

“You wanted a wife who would admire you.””

I looked at him.

“But you married a partner.””

He said nothing.

The next morning, Daniel arrived with devastating news.

“The recording changes everything.””

I handed him the flash drive.

“Can it be used?””

He examined the files carefully.

“Yes.””

A small wave of relief passed through me.

Then he continued.

“But there is a problem.””

“What?””

“The recording was obtained from Brenda.””

I frowned.

“She recorded them.””

“Yes.””

“So?””

Daniel looked serious.

“If Mark’s attorneys claim she participated in the plan, they may argue she is unreliable.””

I understood.

“We need more.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“How much more?””

“Enough to prove the entire operation.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“We need financial records, communication history, company documents.””

I nodded.

“Then we find them.””

He studied me.

“You’re ready?””

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the world continued as if nothing had happened.

Cars moved.

People walked.

Children laughed.

Nobody knew my entire life had changed.

“Yes.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Your father would be proud.””

That sentence almost broke me.

Because I wished he could see me.

I wished I could ask him why he kept the truth from me.

Later that day, I went to Crestview for the first time in months.

The building looked exactly the same.

The glass doors.

The marble floors.

The company logo on the wall.

But I felt like a stranger.

Employees stopped talking when I entered.

Some looked surprised.

Others looked uncomfortable.

Then I saw Brenda.

She stood near Mark’s office.

Everyone around her suddenly became quiet.

Mark walked out.

“Laura.””

I ignored him.

“I need access to the company records.””

His expression changed.

“You no longer handle operations.””

I smiled.

“That’s interesting.””

I held up a copy of my ownership documents.

“Because according to this, I still do.””

His face turned pale.

Employees started watching.

For years, Mark had controlled the story.

Today, that story was changing.

“Let’s not do this here,” he said.

“Why?””

I looked around.

“Afraid people will hear the truth?””

His voice lowered.

“You don’t understand the consequences.””

I stepped closer.

“No, Mark.””

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“You don’t.””

Before he could answer, the elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Everyone immediately became quiet.

Mark’s face changed.

Because he recognized him.

So did I.

Richard Hale.

The man from the photograph.

He smiled.

“Laura.””

My blood ran cold.

“Richard.””

He looked around the office.

“Looks like things are finally becoming interesting.””

Mark moved forward.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard smiled.

“Checking on my investment.””

I froze.

Investment?

Mark’s face went pale.

And suddenly I understood.

Richard wasn’t just connected to Brenda.

May you like

He was connected to Crestview.

And he had just walked into my company like he owned part of it.
