Chapter 5: The Enemy Living in My House

I ended the call without saying goodbye.

For several seconds, I just stood there.

Looking at Mark.

Looking at Ofelia.

Trying to understand how the two people closest to me had been working together behind my back.

“You knew,” I said.

Ofelia looked away.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“You knew everything.””

She slowly stood.

“Laura, you don’t understand.””

I laughed.

It was a quiet, painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed at her.

“You lived in my house.””

Her face tightened.

“You invited me.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Because I thought you were family.””

The word seemed to bother her.

Family.

Maybe because she knew she had lost the right to it.

Mark moved between us.

“Enough.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“Not enough.””

For years, I had swallowed my feelings to keep peace.

I ignored comments.

I ignored disrespect.

I ignored the strange closeness between Mark and Brenda.

I told myself every marriage had difficult seasons.

But this wasn’t a difficult season.

This was a carefully planned betrayal.

Ofelia sat down.

“I never wanted things to go this far.””

I stared at her.

“But you helped.””

She looked at her hands.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

Maybe because I expected another lie.

“Why?””

She looked up.

“Because Mark was right.””

My chest tightened.

“About what?””

“That you were holding onto control.””

I stared.

“Control?””

She nodded.

“You never let him truly lead.””

I almost smiled.

After everything.

That was her excuse.

“I built the company.””

“He was your husband.””

“And?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“You should have trusted him.””

I walked toward the table.

“You mean I should have trusted him enough to steal from me?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

The next few days became a storm.

Not the dramatic kind people imagine.

No screaming every hour.

No broken dishes.

Just cold silence.

The kind that happens when a family stops pretending.

I moved into the guest room.

Mark tried several times to talk.

I refused.

Not because I was weak.

Because every conversation with him somehow ended with me apologizing.

That was his talent.

Turning his mistakes into my responsibility.

On Friday morning, Daniel called.

“We need to meet.””

“Why?””

“There is a problem.””

My heart sank.

“What kind of problem?””

“The documents Mark created are not the only issue.””

I met Daniel at a small coffee shop away from Crestview.

He arrived carrying another folder.

“You look tired,” he said.

“I am.””

He nodded.

“You have every right to be.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were emails.

Messages.

Financial records.

Then I saw something.

A date.

A year earlier.

Before Brenda was hired.

Before Ofelia moved in.

Before I suspected anything.

“This started that long ago?””

Daniel nodded.

“Possibly longer.””

I read through the messages.

Mark had been discussing Crestview’s future with investors.

Not as my company.

As his.

One message caught my attention.

From Mark to an investor:

“Once Laura is removed from daily operations, the transition will be simple.””

Removed.

That word hurt more than I expected.

Not because it surprised me.

Because it confirmed what I already knew.

I wasn’t his partner.

I was an obstacle.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“There is something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your father’s final investigation included Brenda.””

I froze.

“Brenda?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel slid another document across the table.

“Because your father believed she was not just Mark’s affair partner.””

I read the page.

My eyes widened.

It was a background report.

Brenda’s previous employment.

Previous companies.

Previous relationships.

Then I saw a name.

A company.

A connection.

I looked at Daniel.

“She knew him before Crestview.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He opened his mouth.

But before he answered, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My blood turned cold.

Because whoever sent it knew exactly what was happening.

The message said:

“Laura, if you want to know why Mark chose Brenda, ask her about the company she destroyed five years ago.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who sent this?””

He checked the number.

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Another message arrived.

This time with a photo attached.

A photo of Brenda.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone from Mark’s past.

Daniel whispered:

“Laura…”

I looked closer.

And realized the person beside Brenda was the reason my husband had been so desperate to hide everything.

May you like

Because Brenda wasn’t the beginning of Mark’s betrayal.

She was only the latest person in a much bigger plan.
