Chapter 9

Bennett stood so fast the chair tipped.

His face went blank when he saw Nora.

Then my uncle.

Then Detective Aaron Vale behind them.

For the first time since I married him, Bennett looked cornered.

“Tessa,” he said.

I did not answer.

Detective Vale stepped forward.

“Bennett Halloway, we need you to come with us for questioning.”

“On what grounds?”

“Forgery, conspiracy, threats against a vulnerable patient, and attempted medical coercion.”

Bennett laughed.

It sounded almost real.

“My wife is having a breakdown.”

I looked at him calmly.

“No, Bennett. I’m having witnesses.”

His eyes flashed.

There he was.

The man behind the mask.

“You think this makes you safe?”

My uncle moved before anyone else.

He stood between Bennett and my bed.

“She is safe enough for you to be foolish in front of police.”

Bennett’s lawyer arrived within the hour.

So did Margot’s.

Diane’s.

Halloway Capital’s.

Money moved fast when it was afraid.

But evidence moved too.

By morning, the hallway shove video had been secured.

The forged medical power of attorney had been traced to Bennett’s office.

Diane’s threat was recorded.

Bennett’s own words were recorded.

And Margot made the mistake of trying to delete texts while sitting in a hospital waiting room under camera surveillance.

Detective Vale recovered enough before lunch.

Messages.

Bennett: After birth, we file instability.

Margot: What if she fights?

Diane: Then make sure she cannot.

My hands trembled when Nora read them.

My uncle looked like he might tear the room apart.

I asked the only question that mattered.

“My daughter?”

Nora’s face softened.

“We’re filing emergency protective motions before she is born.”

“Can they take her?”

“No,” she said. “Not if we stay ahead.”

I leaned back and closed my eyes.

For months, I had felt trapped in Bennett’s house.

Now I was trapped in a hospital suite.

But this trap had windows.

And people standing guard.

And for the first time, the door was locked against him.
