Chapter 1

Margot shoved me in the middle of the hospital hallway while my husband watched.

Not hard enough to break bones.

Not hard enough to send me crashing into equipment.

But hard enough to make every nurse, patient, doctor, and stranger in that polished corridor understand one thing.

She believed I was nothing.

I hit the marble on one hip, one hand flying over my stomach.

Eight months pregnant.

Faded blue maternity dress.

Swollen ankles.

No wedding ring on my finger because Bennett had told me three days earlier that I no longer deserved to wear “his family’s symbol.”

My name was Tessa Halloway.

On paper, I was Bennett Halloway’s wife.

In his house, I had become an inconvenience.

To Margot Vale, his twenty-six-year-old mistress with perfect hair and cruel eyes, I was just the last obstacle between her and the billionaire life she thought she had earned.

Bennett stood over me in his charcoal suit, watch shining beneath the hospital lights.

“Don’t make this dramatic, Tessa.”

I looked up at him.

For one second, I searched his face for the man who had once held my hand during thunderstorms.

I found only calculation.

Margot clung to his arm.

“Maybe now you’ll finally understand where you belong.”

I didn’t cry.

That disappointed her.

Women like Margot wanted tears. They wanted begging. They wanted proof their cruelty had landed.

I breathed.

My daughter moved gently beneath my palm.

A tiny kick.

A reminder.

I was not alone.

“Are you really going to say nothing?” I asked Bennett.

His jaw tightened.

“Margot is upset.”

A nurse gasped.

Someone whispered, “She’s pregnant.”

Bennett noticed the witnesses then.

His whole expression changed.

He reached down, offering his hand like a caring husband.

“Get up, Tessa. People are watching.”

I stared at that hand.

Three years ago, it slid a ring onto my finger.

Three days ago, it froze every personal card in my wallet.

Now it wanted to look clean for an audience.

I pushed myself up without taking it.

“I’m okay,” I told the nurse.

Calmly.

That bothered Margot more than screaming would have.

I looked at Bennett.

Then at my stained dress.

Then at the black security camera in the corner.

Recording everything.

And then I saw him walking toward us.

Dr. Adrian Mercer.

Hospital director.

My uncle.

His face changed the moment he saw me.

He looked at Margot.

Then Bennett.

Then he said four words that froze the entire hallway.

“Touch my niece again.”

Bennett went still.

Margot’s fingers slipped from his arm.

My uncle stepped beside me.

May you like

His voice turned colder.

“Bennett, who exactly did you think you married?”
