Chapter 6

The raids began before dawn.

Federal agents entered three warehouses.

They seized ledgers, phones, weapons, and millions of dollars in illegal goods.

Two corrupt officers were arrested at home.

One councilman tried to flee.

He did not get far.

Dominic was arrested outside his downtown office.

News cameras captured him in handcuffs.

The man who had bragged that police belonged to him now had agents reading him his rights.

Clara watched the footage from the safe apartment.

She covered her mouth.

“I thought he was untouchable.”

“That is what he wanted you to believe.”

Dominic’s lawyer immediately claimed the investigation was political.

But the recordings spoke for themselves.

So did the financial records.

So did the witnesses.

And Clara had the courage to give a statement.

She told investigators about the bruises.

The threats.

The locked doors.

The night she ran barefoot through the rain.

Afterward, she sat silently for a long time.

Then she said, “I told the truth.”

“Yes,” I said.

She looked at me.

“It feels strange.”

“It will feel stronger every time.”
