Chapter 3

The first intercepted call came at 2:17 in the morning.
Dominic was speaking to one of the officers he had bribed.
“She ran to her mother,” he said.
The officer asked what he wanted done.
“Bring her back.”
“What about the judge?”
Dominic laughed.
“Her mother is old. She is nothing without that robe.”
I stood in the hospital hallway listening to the recording through Agent Reed’s phone.
For one second, anger rose so hot inside me that I could barely breathe.
Then I became calm.
I had learned long ago that rage could cloud judgment.
Evidence did not.
“Keep recording,” I said.
Clara stayed at the hospital until morning.
The baby was unharmed.
But Dr. Park ordered rest and warned Clara that stress could cause complications.
As the sun came up, Clara looked at me from her hospital bed.
“I feel stupid,” she said.
I sat beside her.
“You are not stupid.”
“I stayed.”
“You survived until you could leave.”
“But I should have told you.”
I touched her face carefully, avoiding the bruise.
“Abuse is designed to make people feel ashamed. The shame belongs to him, not you.”
She cried quietly.
Then she nodded.
And for the first time since she arrived, I saw something new in her eyes.
Not safety.

Not yet.
But the beginning of belief.
