Chapter 2

I stared at the photograph.

My grandmother had one daughter.

My mother, Caroline.

At least, that was what I had believed my entire life.

“Who was her first daughter?” I asked.

Dad looked away.

That small movement gave me the answer I feared.

“You knew.”

“I knew Eleanor had another child.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared before I met your mother.”

Detective Cole placed the photograph inside an evidence bag.

“Did Eleanor ever mention Diane?”

“Never.”

Dad rubbed both hands over his face.

“She warned me that someone might approach Emily after her death. She didn’t give me a name.”

My grandmother had died eleven months earlier.

Her trust transferred to me after probate closed.

It contained two million dollars, thirty percent of Hale Manufacturing, and a lakefront estate.

Ryan changed after I inherited it.

He called the money our future.

Diane began visiting every week.

They pressured me to sell the company shares.

I thought greed explained everything.

Now the secret appeared older than my marriage.

A nurse prepared me for surgery.

Before they took me away, Dad promised to investigate Vault 17.

Detective Cole stopped him.

“The key is evidence.”

“Then come with me.”

The vault was located beneath the original Hale Manufacturing building.

My grandmother had owned a private storage room there for decades.

Police opened it while I was in surgery.

When I woke, Dad sat beside my bed with a metal box.

His eyes were red.

“What did you find?”

“Your grandmother left recordings.”

Inside the box were birth certificates, letters, photographs, and a cassette player.

Dad pressed the button.

My grandmother’s voice filled the hospital room.

“My first daughter was named Diana.”

Diane.

My mother-in-law was my grandmother’s missing child.

My heart began pounding.

Eleanor explained that she gave birth to Diane at seventeen.

Her parents forced her to surrender the baby for adoption.

Thirty years later, Diane found her.

At first, Eleanor welcomed her.

Then Diane demanded money and company shares.

“She believes blood entitles her to everything I built,” Eleanor said. “When I refused, she threatened Caroline and Emily.”

Diane had not entered my life when Ryan and I married.

She had placed Ryan near me deliberately.

My marriage had been part of a twenty-year revenge plan.

The recording continued.

“Diane is my daughter, but she is not my heir. Emily is. I made that choice because Emily never treated love as a transaction.”

Tears filled my eyes.

A second cassette contained an argument.

Diane demanded half the company.

Grandma refused.

“You abandoned me,” Diane shouted.

“I was a frightened child when adults took you away.”

“You built a life with another daughter.”

“I searched for you.”

“You didn’t search hard enough.”

Grandma offered counseling, a home, and financial help.

Diane wanted ownership.

When she did not receive it, she threatened to destroy my mother’s family.

The final tape was recorded one week before Grandma died.

“Ryan has married Emily,” Grandma said. “Diane’s plan has reached my granddaughter’s home.”

She had suspected him from the beginning.

But she never warned me directly.

“Why didn’t she tell me?” I asked.

Dad unfolded a letter.

“She tried.”

The letter was addressed to me.

It had been returned unopened.

Someone had forged my refusal signature.

Ryan handled our mail.

He had hidden the warning.

Detective Cole entered with another update.

Ryan and Diane had been released pending a hearing.

The prosecutor had argued they were dangerous, but their attorney produced medical records claiming I suffered from confusion after a car accident.

I had never been in a serious car accident.

The records were forged.

The doctor who signed them was Ryan’s uncle.

They planned to argue that I authorized the trust transfer and forgot.

Dad stood.

“They broke her leg.”

“The judge issued strict protective orders.”

“That won’t stop them.”

My phone rang.

The caller was my house alarm company.

Someone had entered through the bedroom window.

A live camera showed Ryan opening my safe.

He removed a second envelope.

Across the front, Grandma had written:

PROOF OF CAROLINE’S MURDER.

Ryan looked directly at the camera.

Then he lit the envelope on fire.
