Chapter 1

The bat struck my leg before I reached the front door.
Pain exploded through my knee.
I fell onto the living-room floor and screamed.
Ryan stood over me with both hands wrapped around the wooden handle.
“You should’ve listened.”
I tried to crawl backward.
My injured leg would not move.
On the other side of the room, my mother-in-law calmly folded her arms.
“This is what happens when wives disobey,” Diane said.
I stared at my husband.
An hour earlier, he had asked me to sign documents transferring control of my grandmother’s trust.
When I refused, he locked the doors.
Diane placed the papers in front of me and said marriage required sacrifice.
I tore them in half.
That was when Ryan picked up the bat.
“You broke my leg over money,” I whispered.
“You forced me to.”
Diane sighed as though I were an inconvenience.
“The trust belongs to the family now.”
“My grandmother left it to me.”
“You married Ryan. That made it ours.”
“No. It didn’t.”
I reached for my phone.
Ryan lifted the bat again.
“If you call the police, the next hit won’t be on your leg.”
My fingers found my father’s number.
Ryan grabbed for the phone.
The front door suddenly opened.
Dad stood in the doorway.
His eyes moved from me to the bat in Ryan’s hands.
“Get away from my daughter.”
Ryan pointed toward me.
“She attacked my mother.”
Dad crossed the room.
Ryan swung the bat.
Dad blocked it with his forearm and punched Ryan across the jaw.
Ryan fell backward onto the couch.
The bat struck the floor.
Diane rushed toward Dad.
He stepped between us.
“Touch Emily, and you’ll join your son.”
Diane stopped.
Dad knelt beside me.
His hands shook when he saw my leg.
“Can you move your toes?”
“Yes.”
“An ambulance is coming.”
Ryan tried to stand.
Dad pushed him back.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
Diane reached for the papers on the dining table.
Dad saw her.
He picked them up first.
The document title read:
IRREVOCABLE TRANSFER OF THE ELEANOR HALE FAMILY TRUST.
My signature appeared on the final page.
It looked almost perfect.
But I had never signed it.
The document transferred my grandmother’s money, company shares, and lakefront property to Diane.
“It’s forged,” I said.
Diane lunged for the pages.
Dad shoved her back.
“You planned this before you attacked her.”
Ryan wiped blood from his lip.
“Emily agreed last week.”
“I did not.”
“She forgets things when she’s emotional,” Diane said.
Dad’s face hardened.
“Is that the lie you planned to tell the police?”
Sirens approached outside.
Diane looked toward the kitchen.
She tried to run.
Dad blocked the hallway.
Police entered with paramedics.
I told them everything.
Ryan claimed the bat had fallen and struck me by accident.
Diane said Dad attacked them during a family disagreement.
Then an officer examined the bat.
My blood marked one side.
Ryan’s fingerprints covered the handle.
The torn transfer papers lay beneath the table.
Dad gave police the complete forged copy.
Officers handcuffed Ryan.
He looked at me as if I had betrayed him.
“Emily, tell them you don’t want to press charges.”
I pulled off my wedding ring.
The movement hurt more than I expected.
“Breaking my leg ended this marriage.”
I placed the ring beside the forged document.
“Trying to steal my grandmother’s trust will end your freedom.”
Diane began shouting when officers handcuffed her.
“You ungrateful little thief! That inheritance was never supposed to be yours!”
I stared at her.
“How would you know what my grandmother intended?”
Diane stopped struggling.
She had revealed too much.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed two fractures.
I would need surgery.
Dad stayed beside me until Detective Maya Cole arrived with evidence from the house.
Police had searched Diane’s purse.
Inside, they found my grandmother’s original trust key.
It had disappeared from my safe six months earlier.
They also found a photograph of Diane standing beside my grandmother’s hospital bed the night Eleanor died.
Diane had always claimed she never met her.
On the back, my grandmother had written:
If Diane Cole comes near Emily, open Vault 17.
