Chapter 8

Margaret’s brother, Senator Charles Vale, owned the helicopter through a private security company.

He claimed it had been stolen.

Flight records proved his pilot took off using authorized codes.

Federal agents arrested the pilot after the helicopter landed at a rural airfield, but Richard had already transferred to another vehicle.

Senator Vale used his office to accuse investigators of political persecution.

He demanded Margaret’s release and described Lily as a “confused spouse manipulated by her father.”

Lily watched his interview beside Ethan’s hospital bed.

“He has never spoken to me alone.”

“He doesn’t need the truth,” I said. “He needs a story that protects his family.”

Grace provided another recording.

It showed Senator Vale at the mansion discussing Lily’s trust.

“Once Richard controls her shares, the hotels can move campaign money without questions,” he said.

The conspiracy now reached beyond local police.

Federal prosecutors obtained warrants for Vale’s offices.

Before agents entered, his staff shredded documents and destroyed computers.

But David had kept copies of campaign payments inside Anne’s archive.

He agreed to testify.

My brother knew he could go to prison for approving the illegal transfers. For the first time, he stopped asking for protection from consequences.

“I failed Anne,” he told me. “Then I failed Lily.”

“You can still tell the truth.”

“It won’t make me a good man.”

“No. But it may stop worse men.”

Margaret changed her story again after learning investigators had the Vale recording.

She offered full cooperation.

This time, she admitted arranging Richard’s escape.

“Why should anyone believe you now?” Lily asked through the glass.

“Because Charles plans to kill Richard.”

“Your brother?”

“He believes Richard knows too much.”

The Ashford family was turning against itself.

Margaret revealed that Vale owned a riverfront campaign retreat. Richard was hiding there until false documents could be prepared.

Federal agents surrounded the retreat.

Lily insisted on remaining at the hospital with Ethan.

I joined Captain Torres at the command point.

Richard called before agents entered.

He had somehow accessed the hospital cameras.

Lily appeared on a monitor beside him.

She was still inside Ethan’s room.

“If anyone enters this building,” Richard said, “someone at the hospital kills Lily.”

A nurse stood behind my daughter holding a syringe.

I recognized her from Easter dinner.

She was Vale’s chief of staff.

Richard had placed her near Ethan before the raid.

I called Lily.

She answered without showing fear.

“Dad?”

“Look at me.”

Her eyes moved toward the hospital camera.

“I’m looking.”

“Trust yourself.”

The chief of staff ordered her to hang up.

Lily dropped the phone and grabbed the woman’s wrist.

The syringe fell.

Ethan pressed his emergency button while Lily fought to keep the woman away from him.

Hospital security entered and restrained her.

“Lily is safe!” Captain Torres shouted.

Federal agents stormed the retreat.

Vale attempted to escape by boat.

Richard ran through the woods.

I followed Torres to the riverbank.

Richard appeared behind me and pressed a gun against my back.

“Tell them to lower their weapons.”

Torres stopped.

“Release him.”

Richard dragged me toward Vale’s boat.

The senator shouted from the deck.

“You were supposed to bring Lily!”

“You tried to have me killed!”

Richard turned his gun toward Vale.

The senator fired first.

The bullet struck Richard’s side.

I broke free as state officers returned fire.

Vale’s boat crashed into the dock.

Richard fell into the river.

Despite everything he had done, I jumped after him.

He was unconscious beneath the surface.

I pulled him toward shore.

Captain Torres helped lift him onto the dock.

Paramedics stopped the bleeding.

Richard opened his eyes.

“You saved me.”

“I want you alive when Lily tells the court what you did.”

Senator Vale survived and was arrested.

Richard finally returned to custody under federal guard.

But the offshore money was still missing.

Investigators discovered someone had accessed it during the raid.

The verification used Lily’s face and voice.

The transfer appeared to come from her hospital room.

Someone had created a perfect digital copy of my daughter.

And the money had been sent to an account bearing my name.
