Chapter 4

David survived the gunshot.

The bullet passed through his shoulder, but the shooter escaped through a service tunnel beneath the hotel.

Captain Torres found a gold cuff link beside the rear exit.

It carried Chief Caldwell’s initials.

Caldwell claimed someone had stolen it.

He also insisted he was at police headquarters during the shooting, but security footage from his office had disappeared.

David was taken into protective custody.

From his hospital bed, he explained why Margaret had selected Lily for Richard.

My late wife, Anne, had been the secret biological daughter of Ashford Resorts founder Charles Ashford.

Charles had an affair with Anne’s mother before marrying Margaret’s aunt. To avoid scandal, he publicly treated Anne as a family friend.

Privately, he gave her thirty percent of the company.

When Anne died, those shares passed to Lily.

“Margaret knew Richard could gain influence over the shares through marriage,” David said.

“So she pushed him toward my daughter.”

“He was already engaged to someone else. Margaret ended it.”

Lily looked sick.

“My entire marriage was planned.”

Richard’s affection, the sudden proposal, and the beautiful wedding had been steps in Margaret’s business strategy.

“When did Richard learn?” I asked.

“Before the wedding.”

Lily turned away.

I wanted to tear every Ashford building apart.

Instead, I asked what Anne had hidden in the archive.

David said she kept copies of company ledgers and recorded conversations with Charles. The files proved Margaret’s branch of the family had stolen from the company for decades.

One recording might connect Chief Caldwell to a young hotel employee’s disappearance.

Her name was Sofia Reyes.

She vanished eight years earlier after accusing Richard of assault.

The case was closed by Caldwell.

Lily remembered Sofia.

“She trained me when I joined the company. Richard said she stole money and ran away.”

Captain Torres reopened the missing-person investigation.

Sofia’s car had been found near the river, but no body was recovered.

Her mother still lived nearby.

We visited her that afternoon.

Mrs. Reyes gave Lily a small package Sofia mailed days before disappearing. She had been afraid to open it.

Inside was a hotel access card, a photograph of Richard striking Sofia, and a handwritten message.

IF I DISAPPEAR, CHECK ROOM 814.

Room 814 belonged to the oldest Ashford hotel downtown. Official records claimed it had been permanently closed after water damage.

Lily used her shareholder authority to enter.

The room had no furniture.

A square section of carpet looked newer than the rest.

State officers lifted it and found dried blood beneath the floorboards.

They also discovered a hidden camera inside the wall.

Its storage system still contained one damaged video.

Technicians recovered part of it.

Sofia appeared in the room arguing with Richard. She threatened to expose his violence and the company’s money laundering.

Chief Caldwell entered.

The video ended seconds later.

It was enough to obtain search warrants, but not enough to prove what happened to Sofia.

Richard remained jailed on state charges, yet his attorney organized an emergency Ashford board meeting.

He planned to remove Lily as a shareholder by declaring her mentally incompetent.

The forged clinic records would support him.

Lily insisted on attending.

“You’re injured,” I said.

“This is why he hurt me. If I hide now, he wins.”

She entered the boardroom wearing a high-necked dress. Before speaking, she removed the scarf covering her bruises.

Every director stared.

“My husband called these injuries a fall,” she said. “His mother called them discipline.”

Richard appeared by video from jail.

“This is a family matter.”

“No,” Lily replied. “This is evidence.”

She played the Easter recording.

Then she presented David’s testimony and the reopened Sofia Reyes case.

The board voted to suspend Richard and freeze his authority.

Margaret lost her seat minutes later.

As we left the building, local police surrounded me.

Chief Caldwell stepped from the lead car.

“Paul Bennett, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Richard Ashford.”

He displayed a new video.

It showed me entering Richard’s jail cell and attacking him.

I had never been inside that jail.

But the man in the video had my face.
