Chapter 7: The Lie That Changed Everything

“No.””

Richard's word echoed through the underground chamber.

Nathan slowly lowered the phone.

Thomas Reed's voice still seemed trapped inside his head.

Samuel isn't your brother.

He's your father.

Nathan looked at Samuel.

Samuel hadn't moved.

His face was unreadable.

Nathan looked at Richard.

His father's expression was worse.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

Richard swallowed.

“No.””

Nathan stepped toward him.

“You recognized the lie before I even repeated it.””

“Because Thomas is trying to destroy you.””

“Then tell me he's lying.””

Richard said nothing.

Nathan's voice dropped.

“Tell me.””

Richard looked at Samuel.

Samuel gave a bitter smile.

“Go ahead.””

Richard shook his head.

“You don't understand.””

Nathan's hand tightened around the phone.

“Then explain it.””

Margaret stepped between them.

“Your father is telling the truth.””

Nathan turned toward her.

“You too?””

She shook her head.

“Samuel is your brother.””

“Then why would Thomas say—”

“Because he wants you to doubt everyone.””

Nathan stared at her.

“Did Thomas invent the photograph too?””

“What photograph?””

Nathan grabbed the picture from the table and held it out.

The one showing Amelia beside the strange teenage boy.

Samuel stepped closer.

His eyes narrowed.

“I know him.””

Nathan looked at him.

“Who?””

“The Ghost.””

“What is his real name?””

Samuel's expression hardened.

“Elias Vale.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Nathan noticed.

“You know him.””

She didn't answer.

“Margaret.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He was my husband's brother.””

Nathan froze.

“Your husband?””

Margaret nodded.

“I was married once.””

Nathan had never heard her mention it.

“To Elias?””

“No.””

She looked toward Eleanor.

“Eleanor knows.””

Nathan turned.

“Tell me.””

Eleanor's face became grim.

“Elias was born into the Vale family, one of the five families controlling the council.””

Nathan looked at Samuel.

“And Amelia?””

“Was promised to him,” Samuel said.

Nathan's stomach tightened.

“Promised?””

“As part of an alliance.””

Richard stepped forward.

“And that's when your mother intervened.””

Nathan looked at him.

“What did she do?””

“She broke the agreement.””

“And that caused all this?””

Richard nodded.

“Your mother refused to allow Amelia to be used.””

Nathan looked at the photograph.

“Then why was she killed?””

Eleanor answered.

“Because the council discovered Evelyn had created a second inheritance.””

Nathan frowned.

“The trust.””

“Yes.””

“One half for me.””

“One half for Samuel.””

Nathan looked at Samuel.

“And Amelia?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“She was given something else.””

“What?””

“Protection.””

Nathan looked confused.

“From whom?””

Eleanor's answer was quiet.

“From all of you.””

Samuel stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Your mother knew the council would hunt the children.””

“So she separated us.””

“Yes.””

“Where was Amelia sent?””

Eleanor looked down.

“To the Vale family.””

Samuel's face changed.

“No.””

“They claimed they wanted to protect her.””

“But they killed her.””

“Yes.””

Silence filled the chamber.

Nathan turned toward Victoria.

“You knew.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I was there.””

Samuel looked at her.

“You watched.””

“I was sixteen!””

“You were old enough to understand.””

“I didn't!””

“You saw them take her.””

Victoria's voice broke.

“They told me she was going somewhere safe.””

“And you believed them?””

“Yes!””

Samuel stared at her.

For a moment, his anger disappeared.

What remained was grief.

“What was the last thing she said?””

Victoria began trembling.

“I don't remember.””

“Yes, you do.””

She looked away.

“She asked about you.””

Samuel's face tightened.

“What did she say?””

Victoria cried harder.

“She asked me to tell you…”

She stopped.

Samuel waited.

“What?””

“She said she wasn't afraid.””

Samuel closed his eyes.

Nathan looked at him.

For the first time, he saw the brother beneath the anger.

Not a criminal.

Not a rival.

Just a man who had spent sixteen years wondering why someone he loved disappeared.

Nathan stepped toward him.

“I'm sorry.””

Samuel opened his eyes.

“For what?””

“For not knowing you existed.””

Samuel stared at him.

Then gave a small laugh.

“You didn't erase me.””

Nathan nodded.

“Our father did.””

Richard flinched.

Nathan turned.

“Why?””

Richard's face hardened.

“Because Samuel was different.””

Nathan frowned.

“Different how?””

Richard took a breath.

“Your mother believed Samuel could survive the council.””

“And I couldn't?””

“She believed you could survive something worse.””

“What?””

“Power.””

Nathan said nothing.

Richard continued.

“You always wanted to belong. You wanted people to love you. You believed loyalty meant something.””

Nathan stared.

“And Samuel?””

Richard looked at his firstborn.

“He was willing to become cruel.””

Samuel smiled without humor.

“You're describing yourself.””

Richard didn't deny it.

Nathan looked toward the exit.

“So Thomas is using that against us.””

“Yes,” Eleanor said.

A muffled explosion shook the chamber.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Everyone looked up.

Daniel rushed through the doorway.

“They've breached the chapel.””

“How many?””

“Twenty, maybe more.””

Nathan picked up the ledger.

“Then we leave.””

Daniel shook his head.

“There's a problem.””

“What?””

“Thomas Reed is with them.””

Nathan's eyes hardened.

“Where?””

“In the chapel.””

“Take me to him.””

“No.””

Nathan stared at Daniel.

“That's not negotiable.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Thomas has been waiting for you.””

“Good.””

“He knows how you think.””

“Then he'll be disappointed.””

Nathan turned toward Samuel.

“You coming?””

Samuel smiled.

“Thought you'd never ask.””

They moved toward the passage.

Victoria started to follow.

Nathan stopped her.

“You stay here.””

She stared at him.

“I can help.””

“You've helped enough.””

Her face tightened.

“Nathan, please.””

He looked at her.

“You lied about your identity.””

She nodded.

“You lied about my family.””

“Yes.””

“You manipulated my wedding.””

“Yes.””

“But you also tried to keep the council from killing me.””

Victoria nodded.

“I did.””

Nathan studied her.

“I don't know what to do with that yet.””

He stepped aside.

“Stay with Margaret.””

Victoria looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because she's the one person here who never lied to hurt me.””

Margaret looked down.

Nathan followed Samuel and Daniel into the tunnel.

They reached a hidden staircase.

At the top, gunfire echoed through the chapel.

Daniel whispered:

“Thomas wants you alive.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust requires your signature.””

Nathan stopped.

“So if I die?””

“They'll have to use Samuel.””

Nathan looked at his brother.

Samuel smiled.

“They'll never get my signature.””

Nathan nodded.

“Good.””

They reached the chapel.

The wooden doors stood open.

Bodies lay across the marble floor.

Nathan stepped inside.

“Thomas!””

A slow clap came from the altar.

Thomas Reed emerged from behind a column.

He was wearing the same gray suit Nathan had seen him wear at hundreds of family meetings.

No weapon.

No fear.

Just a small smile.

“Nathan.””

Nathan raised his gun.

“You have ten seconds.””

Thomas laughed.

“Always dramatic.””

“You've worked for my family for twenty-one years.””

“Twenty-two.””

“You betrayed my father.””

“I saved him.””

“You betrayed my mother.””

“I warned her.””

“You betrayed me.””

Thomas's smile faded.

“I protected you.””

Nathan took another step.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

Thomas looked at Samuel.

“Now I understand why.””

Samuel's expression hardened.

Thomas looked back at Nathan.

“You think this is about money.””

“It isn't?””

“No.””

Thomas reached into his coat.

Daniel raised his weapon.

Thomas stopped.

Then slowly removed an old envelope.

He held it up.

“Your mother sent this to me the night before she died.””

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because she knew I was the only person left who could protect all three children.””

Samuel took a step forward.

“There are only two.””

Thomas smiled.

“No.””

Nathan froze.

Thomas's gaze shifted toward the chapel doors.

“There's a third.””

A woman appeared in the doorway.

She was wearing a black coat.

Her hair was dark.

Her face was partially hidden.

Nathan stared at her.

Samuel went completely still.

The woman slowly removed the scarf covering her mouth.

Nathan's heart stopped.

He knew that face.

He had seen it in the photographs.

A child.

A little girl.

Amelia.

Impossible.

She smiled faintly.

May you like

“Hello, brothers.””

And behind her, Margaret screamed.
