Chapter 3: The Vault

The vault door stood open.

Nathan could hear the low hum of emergency power beneath the house, the sound traveling through the walls like a distant heartbeat.

“No,” Margaret whispered again.

Nathan turned toward her.

“Why are you afraid?””

“Because I locked it.””

Victoria laughed nervously.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Margaret's head snapped toward her.

“You don't understand what you just opened.””

“I didn't open anything.””

“Then who did?””

No one answered.

Nathan raised his flashlight.

“Marcus.””

The head of security stepped forward.

“Sir.””

“Get everyone out of this hallway.””

Marcus nodded.

“Everyone?””

“Everyone except my father.””

Richard remained at the top of the stairs.

He looked older under the emergency lights.

More fragile.

But Nathan noticed something else.

His father's eyes were fixed on Victoria.

Not Margaret.

Not Daniel.

Victoria.

Nathan saw it.

So did Daniel.

Daniel's hand moved toward his jacket.

Victoria noticed.

“Don't.””

Daniel smiled.

“You remember what happened last time.””

Nathan looked between them.

“What happened last time?””

Neither answered.

Nathan stepped toward the basement door.

“Open it.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Sir, your father said—”

“I didn't ask what my father said.””

Marcus opened the door.

The basement stairwell descended into darkness.

Nathan went first.

Margaret followed.

Richard came behind them.

Victoria stayed at the top.

Nathan looked over his shoulder.

“You're coming.””

She shook her head.

“I don't want to.””

“That wasn't a request.””

She slowly descended.

Daniel remained upstairs with two guards.

As they reached the bottom, Nathan saw the vault.

The steel door was open by nearly two feet.

Inside was darkness.

No alarm.

No warning light.

Nothing.

Nathan approached.

His father spoke behind him.

“Don't go in.””

Nathan turned.

“You're going to start telling me what to do now?””

Richard shook his head.

“I'm telling you because I failed once.””

“You've been failing me for sixteen years.””

Richard's face tightened.

“I know.””

Nathan entered the vault.

The air smelled like old paper, cold steel, and cedar.

A single table stood in the center.

On it were three objects.

A black ledger.

A silver key.

And a small wooden box.

Nathan stared.

“What is this?””

Margaret stepped inside.

Richard remained in the doorway.

“The three things your mother died protecting.””

Nathan looked at him.

“My mother didn't die protecting things.””

“She died protecting you.””

Nathan's voice sharpened.

“Stop saying that. Tell me what happened.””

Richard looked down.

“She discovered what I had built.””

Nathan frowned.

“The network?””

“Yes.””

“The criminal empire?””

Richard nodded.

“And she wanted out.””

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“She helped her.””

Richard gave a bitter smile.

“She saved her.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Your mother discovered that the Whitmore companies were being used to move money, weapons, and people.””

Nathan looked at the ledger.

“By whom?””

“By your father.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“And by people above me.””

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Who?””

Richard didn't answer.

Victoria suddenly entered the vault.

“Enough.””

Nathan turned.

“You've been very quiet.””

Victoria's eyes were fixed on the wooden box.

Margaret noticed.

“So that's what you came for.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“You've known about the box for months.””

Nathan stared at Victoria.

“What box?””

She didn't answer.

Margaret walked toward the table.

“Your mother told me never to open it unless Nathan was in danger.””

Nathan looked at the small box.

“What's inside?””

“A letter.””

“From my mother?””

“No.””

Margaret looked at Richard.

“From your father.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

Nathan looked at the box.

“You said there was proof.””

Daniel's voice came from the doorway.

“There is.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel entered slowly.

He carried no weapon now.

He walked to the table and pointed at the ledger.

“Your father kept records of every shipment.””

Richard stared at him.

“That ledger was destroyed.””

Daniel smiled.

“You believed that because someone wanted you to.””

Nathan opened it.

The pages were filled with dates, coded initials, company names, account numbers, locations.

He recognized some immediately.

Hotels.

Shipping companies.

Technology firms.

Businesses his family had acquired before he was born.

But then he saw another name.

Caldwell Holdings.

Nathan's breathing slowed.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You're misunderstanding it.””

Nathan looked at her.

“My fiancée's family?””

“It was your father.””

“You're listed beside him.””

“I didn't put my name there.””

“You didn't?””

“No.””

Nathan flipped another page.

There were payments.

Large payments.

Transferred every month for years.

The recipient was listed only as V.C.

Victoria's face went white.

Nathan looked at her.

“Who is V.C.?””

She didn't speak.

Margaret did.

“Victoria Caldwell.””

Victoria slapped her.

The sound echoed through the vault.

Nathan moved instantly.

He caught Victoria's wrist before she could strike again.

“Do that again.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

“Touch her again.””

His voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

Victoria pulled her wrist free.

“She ruined everything.””

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“I protected you.””

“You lied to Nathan.””

“I protected his life!””

Victoria laughed.

“By pretending to be his sister?””

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“Is that what you mean?””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“My mother was named Evelyn Ellis.””

Nathan frowned.

“She wasn't Margaret?””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

“She was your mother?””

“Yes.””

Nathan looked at Richard.

His father said nothing.

Margaret continued.

“Evelyn met your father before he married your mother.””

Nathan felt the pieces moving.

“Then why does everyone call you Margaret Ellis?””

She looked down.

“Because Margaret was my mother's sister.””

Nathan stopped.

“So you're not my sister.””

“No.””

He exhaled.

“What are you?””

Margaret met his eyes.

“Your cousin.””

Victoria whispered:

“What?””

Margaret's voice trembled.

“Evelyn was your father's first love. Your mother was his wife. When Evelyn died, your mother took me in.””

Nathan stared.

The room seemed to shift.

“She raised you.””

“Yes.””

“And my father claimed you were family.””

“She was afraid of what would happen if anyone knew who I really was.””

Richard finally spoke.

“Your mother was trying to protect you from the council.””

Nathan turned.

“What council?””

Richard's expression was grim.

“The people who still control the organization.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“Richard.””

Richard ignored him.

“They believed Nathan inherited more than the companies.””

Nathan stared at his father.

“What did I inherit?””

Richard looked toward the wooden box.

“Authority.””

Silence.

Nathan looked at the box.

“Open it.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Your mother told me not to.””

“She isn't here.””

“I know.””

“Then open it.””

Margaret hesitated.

Victoria suddenly lunged for the table.

Nathan caught her before she reached the box.

She screamed.

“Let me go!””

“What do you want?””

“Nothing!””

“You almost tore my hand off getting to that box.””

Victoria stopped struggling.

Nathan looked into her eyes.

“Why?””

Tears filled her face.

“Because you'll kill me when you find out.””

Nathan released her.

Victoria stumbled backward.

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“Tell me!””

“You weren't supposed to come home.””

Nathan went still.

“What?””

Victoria wiped her face.

“You were supposed to be in New York until Friday.””

“How did you know?””

“I knew because the flight itinerary was changed.””

“By whom?””

Victoria looked toward Richard.

Nathan followed her gaze.

Richard said nothing.

Victoria whispered:

“Your security director.””

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“Marcus?””

A voice came from behind him.

“Yes.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stood in the vault doorway.

His gun was pointed at Nathan.

Nathan's security chief looked almost apologetic.

“I'm sorry, sir.””

Nathan stared at him.

“You've worked for me for eleven years.””

“I know.””

“You've protected my family.””

“I did.””

“Then lower the gun.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I can't.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus, don't.””

Marcus's finger tightened against the trigger.

Victoria backed toward the wall.

Richard's expression changed.

“Who ordered you?””

Marcus looked at Nathan.

Then at the wooden box.

“The council.””

Nathan's eyes hardened.

“Who is the council?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Five families.””

He pointed the gun directly at Nathan's chest.

“And the first one is the Whitmore family.””

Then the wooden box clicked.

It opened by itself.

Inside was a single wedding photograph.

Nathan picked it up.

His father stood beside a young Evelyn.

And between them stood a little girl.

A girl Nathan had never seen.

On the back of the photograph, his mother's handwriting read:

*When Nathan marries Victoria, they will take control of everything.*

Nathan's blood went cold.

Below that sentence was another.

*Do not let him marry her.*

May you like

And beneath it, written in darker ink:

*Because Victoria is not the person she claims to be.*
