Chapter 8: The Call That Changed Everything

The name echoed through the room.

“Vanessa.””

Adrian stared at Clara.

For several seconds, he didn’t understand.

Not because he hadn’t heard her.

Because his mind refused to accept it.

“You’re saying Sophia called Vanessa?””

Clara nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before she called me.””

The silence that followed felt unbearable.

Adrian looked down at the floor.

All this time, he had believed the story was simple.

Sophia was afraid.

Sophia called Clara.

Sophia died.

But now every piece of that memory was shifting.

The night he lost his wife had never been what he thought.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Clara looked away.

“Because I didn’t know what happened during that call.””

“But you knew she called Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to protect Emma.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“From what?””

“From losing everyone.””

The answer surprised him.

Clara stepped closer.

“Adrian, think about what happened after Sophia died.””

He didn’t speak.

“You were broken.””

His face tightened.

“You barely slept. You barely ate. You looked like you were disappearing.””

She swallowed.

“And Emma was a baby.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

He remembered.

The hospital.

The funeral.

Coming home to a house filled with Sophia’s things.

A crib.

A blanket.

A life that suddenly stopped.

“I couldn’t prove Vanessa did anything,” Clara continued.

“So you decided to keep investigating?””

“Yes.””

“By yourself?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it also made him understand.

Clara had carried the burden alone.

Just like everyone else.

“She called Vanessa because she suspected her,” Adrian said.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Clara reached for her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small notebook.

“Sophia’s.””

Adrian stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“She gave it to me the night we met.””

His hands tightened.

“What’s inside?””

“I didn’t read all of it.””

He looked at her.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Sophia told me not to.””

Adrian let out a quiet breath.

“Again.””

Clara nodded.

“I know how frustrating that sounds.””

“It does.””

“But this time, I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if I found something terrible, I wouldn’t know what to do.””

Adrian took the notebook.

The cover was worn.

The edges were damaged.

But he recognized it immediately.

Sophia used that notebook everywhere.

She wrote grocery lists in it.

Ideas for Emma’s birthday.

Random thoughts.

Things she didn’t want to forget.

He opened the first page.

Most of it was normal.

Small memories.

Small plans.

Then he reached a page near the middle.

And stopped.

There was one sentence written repeatedly.

*Trust actions, not promises.*

Adrian frowned.

He turned the page.

Names filled the paper.

Dates.

Notes.

One name appeared more than any other.

Vanessa.

Beside it were three words:

*Too perfect. Too fast.*

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“She knew.””

Clara looked at him.

“She suspected.””

He kept reading.

Another page.

A note.

*March 14. Vanessa asked about Adrian’s insurance. Said it was because she cared about the future. Felt wrong.*

Adrian froze.

March 14.

The exact day Vanessa first asked him about his finances.

He had forgotten.

But Sophia hadn’t.

He turned another page.

*March 21. Vanessa angry after I told her she should slow down. She said I was trying to ruin her happiness.*

Another page.

*April 2. Found missing documents. Need proof.*

Then the last entry.

The handwriting was rushed.

Uneven.

Like Sophia wrote it quickly.

*If something happens to me, Adrian must know the truth. Clara knows where to look.*

Adrian looked up.

“Where to look?””

Clara’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“But she wrote that.””

“I know.””

“You were supposed to know.””

“I thought I did.””

“What does that mean?””

Clara looked toward the window.

“I found the envelope.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“The one Vanessa mentioned.””

“The one from Sophia?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Clara was quiet.

Then:

“Inside Emma’s old nursery.””

Adrian stared.

“Why was it there?””

“Because Sophia hid things where she knew nobody would search.””

“Emma’s nursery?””

Clara nodded.

“She knew that room would always matter to you.””

Adrian looked at the notebook.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because the envelope was empty.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“When I found it, there was nothing inside.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because someone had already opened it.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who?””

Clara looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

But Adrian already knew the answer she was thinking.

Vanessa.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*We need to talk. You owe me that much.*

Adrian stared at it.

Clara noticed.

“She knows.””

“How?””

“Because she always knows when things start falling apart.””

He looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Clara hesitated.

Then said:

“Vanessa wasn’t surprised when Olivia had the video.””

Adrian remembered.

The way Vanessa reacted.

The fear.

The panic.

“She knew there was a witness.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she stop Olivia?””

“Because she didn’t know Olivia had recorded everything.””

Adrian looked at the message again.

For the first time, he didn’t feel tempted to answer.

Instead, he typed one word.

*Where?*

The reply came immediately.

*The place where Sophia and I had our last conversation.*

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Clara looked at him.

“Where?””

He showed her the phone.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

“That’s where Sophia died.””

The old bridge.

The one everyone avoided.

The one Adrian never visited.

The one connected to the worst night of his life.

“She wants you there,” Clara whispered.

“Yes.””

“Alone?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because Vanessa had specifically said:

*You owe me that much.*

Clara shook her head.

“It’s a trap.””

“Maybe.””

“Adrian.””

He looked at her.

“But if she knows something about Sophia…”

Clara understood.

This wasn’t just about Vanessa anymore.

It was about closure.

About the truth.

About the woman they both lost.

An hour later, Adrian arrived at the bridge.

The sky was dark.

Rain had started falling.

Just like that night.

Vanessa stood near the railing.

She looked calm.

Almost peaceful.

Adrian stopped several feet away.

“Why are we here?””

She turned.

“Because you deserve to know the truth.””

He almost laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“You lied about Clara.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You tried to blame the woman who saved Emma.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I panicked.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“You planned.””

Her expression changed slightly.

For the first time, she looked less confident.

“You think you know everything now?””

“I know enough.””

“No, Adrian.””

She stepped closer.

“You know what Clara wanted you to know.””

He stared.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“She was never going to tell you the whole story.””

“Stop.””

“She was there because Sophia called her.””

“I know.””

“But you don’t know why.””

The rain grew heavier.

Adrian felt his heartbeat increase.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at the bridge.

“She didn’t just meet Sophia that night.””

A pause.

“She followed her.””

Adrian went still.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Ask her.””

The words hit him.

Because they sounded exactly like the message.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

Vanessa reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small device.

“A recording.””

Adrian stared.

“What is that?””

“The last conversation Sophia ever had.””

His breathing stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“From the person who found it.””

“Who?””

She looked directly at him.

Then said:

“The person Clara has been protecting for years.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Who?””

Vanessa stepped back.

And whispered:

“Your wife’s killer.””

Before Adrian could respond, headlights appeared behind him.

A car stopped near the bridge.

May you like

The door opened.

And the person who stepped out was someone Adrian never expected to see again.
