Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile
Adrian stared at the message until the words blurred.
*“If you think the video showed everything, you’re about to learn the worst part.””*
His thumb hovered over the screen.
For a moment, he considered calling the number.
Then he stopped.
Because a small part of him already knew.
The truth was no longer about what happened at the pool.
It was about everything that happened before it.
Everything he had ignored.
Everything he had explained away.
He looked toward the staircase where Emma was sleeping.
His daughter had almost fallen into the pool.
And the person he trusted most had stood there and tried to destroy the person who saved her.
The thought made his stomach turn.
He typed a reply.
*Who are you?*
The message showed as delivered.
No answer came.
Adrian waited.
Ten seconds.
Thirty.
One minute.
Nothing.
Then another notification appeared.
Not from the unknown number.
From Vanessa.
*We need to talk. Alone.*
Adrian stared at the screen.
A few months ago, he would have responded immediately.
He would have left work early.
He would have driven across town just to make sure she was okay.
But tonight, he felt something different.
Something he hated admitting.
Doubt.
Not a small doubt.
A heavy one.
The kind that changed the way you remembered everything.
He thought about the first time Vanessa met Emma.
She had cried.
She had told him she wanted to be the mother figure Emma needed.
At the time, Adrian thought it was beautiful.
Now, he wondered if he had mistaken performance for love.
The next morning, Adrian arrived at Clara’s apartment.
He had spent the entire night awake.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image.
Clara jumping into the pool.
Clara holding Emma.
Clara being accused.
He knocked.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
Clara stood there wearing a simple sweater, her hair tied back.
She looked tired.
Not angry.
That somehow made him feel worse.
“Adrian.””
Her voice was polite.
Too polite.
He hated that.
Because once, she used to smile when she saw him.
“I need to talk to you.””
Clara looked past him.
“About what?””
“About everything.””
She hesitated.
Then opened the door wider.
“Five minutes.””
He stepped inside.
Her apartment was small but warm.
Pictures covered one wall.
Most of them were of Emma.
Emma laughing.
Emma painting.
Emma sleeping with a stuffed rabbit.
Adrian looked at them.
“You kept all these?””
Clara followed his eyes.
“She loves looking at them.””
A painful silence followed.
Because Adrian realized something.
Clara had created memories for Emma.
While he had been too busy surviving his own grief to notice.
“I should have believed you,” he said.
Clara looked down.
“Yes.””
The simple answer surprised him.
“I know.””
He swallowed.
“I was wrong.””
Clara turned toward him.
“Why?””
“Why what?””
“Why did you believe her?””
The question had been waiting.
Adrian looked away.
Because the answer was uncomfortable.
“Because I thought I knew her.””
“And you thought you knew me too?””
He didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Clara nodded slowly.
“That’s the part that hurt.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You already said that.””
“I mean it.””
She looked at him.
“Do you?””
The question hit harder than he expected.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me something.””
Adrian waited.
“Did you ever actually see me as family?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the truth was complicated.
He trusted Clara.
He depended on Clara.
He knew she loved Emma.
But family?
He had never allowed himself to say that.
Not after losing his wife.
Not after promising himself he would never let anyone replace what he had lost.
Clara noticed his silence.
“That’s what I thought.””
“Clara…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I spent three years protecting your daughter. I stayed when she had nightmares. I stayed when she was sick. I stayed when you were too overwhelmed to even ask how I was doing.””
Her eyes became wet.
“And yesterday, one lie was enough for you to look at me like I was dangerous.””
Adrian lowered his head.
“I failed you.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But he deserved it.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
The same one.
Clara noticed.
“Are you going to answer?””
Adrian pressed the call button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman spoke.
A voice he didn’t recognize.
“Adrian?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“My name is Rachel.””
Clara looked confused.
Rachel continued.
“I used to work for Vanessa.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Work for her?””
“Yes.””
The voice sounded nervous.
“I saw what happened yesterday.””
Adrian glanced at Clara.
“What do you know?””
Rachel took a breath.
“Vanessa didn’t just want Clara gone.””
A chill moved through him.
“What does that mean?””
“She wanted Emma away from anyone who knew too much.””
Clara stepped closer.
Adrian put the phone on speaker.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel hesitated.
“I was Vanessa’s assistant before she met you. I handled her schedule, appointments, and personal things.””
“And?””
“And I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Insurance papers.””
Adrian frowned.
“For who?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“For Emma.””
The room went silent.
Clara looked at Adrian.
“Why would Vanessa have insurance papers for Emma?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“That’s exactly why I quit.””
Adrian felt his hands tighten.
“Rachel, I need you to explain.””
“I can’t over the phone.””
“Then meet me.””
“No.””
The fear in her voice was obvious.
“I already made one mistake by waiting this long.””
“Where are you?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Adrian, listen carefully.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Do not tell Vanessa that I contacted you.””
“Why?””
“Because if she knows I’m talking…”
The call suddenly cut off.
Adrian stared at the phone.
“Rachel?””
Nothing.
The line was dead.
Clara crossed her arms.
“Insurance papers.””
Adrian looked at her.
“I don’t understand.””
“Maybe we should find out.””
For the first time since yesterday, they were on the same side.
Not employer and employee.
Not suspect and accuser.
Two people trying to uncover the truth.
But neither of them noticed the car parked across the street.
Inside, Vanessa sat silently.
She watched Adrian leave Clara’s apartment.
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
Because she had been waiting.
Waiting to see if Adrian would come back to her.
Waiting to see if he would choose her.
Instead, he went to Clara.
The one person Vanessa could never control.
She opened a hidden folder on her phone.
Inside were dozens of photos.
Photos of Clara.
Photos of Emma.
Photos of Adrian.
And one photo taken years earlier.
A photo Adrian had never seen.
Vanessa stared at it.
Then smiled.
Not the sweet smile everyone knew.
A different one.
A colder one.
“You should have stayed away,” she whispered.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from someone saved as *M*.
*Did he find out?*
Vanessa typed back.
*Not yet. But Clara is becoming a problem.*
A reply came instantly.
*Then remove the problem before she tells him everything.*
Vanessa looked toward Clara’s apartment.
Her expression hardened.
Because the truth was beginning to surface.

And Vanessa knew exactly what she had to do next.
The only question was whether she could stop Clara before Adrian discovered the secret hidden behind the perfect family image.
