Chapter 6

Grace came home six weeks later.
She was still tiny.
Still fragile.
But she was strong.
The first night, I barely slept.
Not because I was afraid of Nathan or Patricia.
They were both under court orders to stay away from us.
I stayed awake because I could not stop watching Grace breathe.
My mother moved in temporarily.
She cooked meals, folded laundry, and held Grace while I showered.
She never made me feel guilty for resting.
One afternoon, she found me crying beside the crib.
“What is it?” she asked.
“I should have protected her.”
Mom sat beside me.
“You did protect her.”
“I waited too long.”
“You called for help when they would not.”
I looked at Grace.
Her chest rose and fell steadily.
“You survived,” Mom said. “She survived. That matters.”
The investigation moved quickly.
Nathan’s business records revealed more than the stolen money.
He had used my company’s accounts to cover personal debt.
Melissa had helped create false invoices.
Patricia had pressured him to take control of my trust because she believed I owed the Caldwell family for marrying Nathan.
Their greed had finally become evidence.
Lena filed for divorce.
She also filed to protect Grace’s financial interests.
Nathan’s lawyer requested supervised visits once he was released.
I agreed only after the court required counseling, accountability, and strict conditions.
I did not want revenge.
May you like
I wanted safety.
That was different.
