Chapter 5

The police searched Patricia’s home the following week.

I was still recovering at the hospital when Detective Bryant called.

They had found Nathan’s hidden phone beneath a floorboard in the guest room.

It contained messages between Nathan, Patricia, and Melissa.

Every ugly truth was there.

Nathan complaining that my maternity leave made me “useless.”

Patricia telling him to make me sign whatever he needed before the baby arrived.

Melissa writing that I was “too exhausted to notice anything.”

Then came the message that made my mother cry.

Patricia had written it at 12:41 that night.

Make her finish the dishes. She’ll be too tired to think straight.

Nathan replied with one word.

Fine.

I read that message in my hospital bed while Grace slept in the neonatal unit.

The man I married had watched me struggle.

Then he had chosen to help them use my exhaustion against me.

Detective Bryant said the evidence supported charges beyond financial fraud.

The emergency recording showed them refusing help.

The house cameras showed Nathan taking my phone and Patricia locking the door.

The paramedics had documented the delay.

The doctors had documented Grace’s medical distress.

Nathan called me from jail after his arrest.

I almost did not answer.

Then I did.

“Emily,” he said. “I love you.”

I looked through the nursery window.

Grace’s tiny hand was curled beside her face.

“You loved what I gave you,” I said.

“That isn’t fair.”

“You left me on the floor.”

“My mother got in my head.”

“You let her.”

He began crying.

For years, I had thought his tears meant he cared.

Now I understood that some people cry only when consequences arrive.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I believe you are sorry,” I said. “But not for hurting me.”

Then I hung up.
