Chapter 6: The Will He Thought He Owned
Julian stood in the doorway as if he had every right to be there.
His black coat was dusted with snow. His hair was perfectly neat. And in his left hand, he held a thick envelope bearing the seal of my father's law firm.
The original will.
My eyes locked onto it.
Julian noticed.
He smiled.
"You always did have a talent for finding things that weren't meant for you.""
Daniel stepped in front of me.
"How did you get in?""
Julian glanced at him.
"Your security system hasn't changed since you opened this office.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"You broke in.""
"No.""
Julian lifted one shoulder.
"I used a key.""
Emily moved away from the door.
"Julian, this wasn't what you said.""
He slowly turned toward her.
"What did I say?""
"That you wouldn't hurt her.""
His expression changed.
For the first time, the calm mask slipped.
"I never said that.""
Emily went pale.
I looked between them.
There it was.
No more performance.
No more excuses.
This was the man I had married.
Julian shut the door behind him.
"The three of you have made a very stupid mistake.""
I stared at the will in his hand.
"Give me that.""
He laughed softly.
"You don't even know what it is.""
"It's my father's will.""
"No.""
He tapped the envelope against his palm.
"It's the reason your father is dead.""
The room went silent.
Daniel moved closer.
"Put it down.""
Julian ignored him.
He looked at me.
"You should have stayed on the train.""
Something inside me went cold.
"You followed me.""
"Of course I followed you.""
He smiled.
"Did you really think I'd let you wander around with seventy million dollars at stake?""
My stomach turned.
"So that's what this was.""
"What?""
"The marriage.""
His face remained calm.
"You finally understand.""
I felt something crack inside me.
Not grief.
Not rage.
Something harder.
Clarity.
"You married me for my inheritance.""
Julian tilted his head.
"I married you because your father made you the key to everything.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You're admitting it.""
Julian laughed.
"Admitting what? That I planned my future?""
"You manipulated her.""
"I built a life.""
"On a lie.""
Julian looked at Daniel.
"You've always been jealous.""
Daniel's jaw clenched.
"You destroyed Rachel.""
Julian's eyes flashed.
"Don't say her name.""
I turned sharply.
"Who was Rachel?""
Julian looked at me.
For a moment, the room was absolutely still.
Then he sighed.
"Your father filled your head with stories.""
"She was your wife.""
He didn't deny it.
"Yes.""
"What happened to her?""
"She made bad decisions.""
"What kind?""
Julian looked almost bored.
"She trusted the wrong people.""
Emily shook her head.
"That's not what happened.""
He turned to her.
"Careful.""
Emily stepped back.
"No.""
Her voice trembled, but she didn't stop.
"I'm done being afraid of you.""
Julian's smile vanished.
"You should be.""
I stood.
"Tell me about Rachel.""
He looked at me.
"Why?""
"Because my father told me to ask.""
Julian's eyes narrowed.
That landed.
He glanced at the letter on the desk.
Then at the black case.
Then back at me.
"So you've seen it.""
"Yes.""
"Everything?""
"Not yet.""
His mouth curved.
"Then you don't understand.""
I stepped closer.
"I understand enough.""
He raised the envelope.
"Your father spent years preparing you to destroy what he built.""
"No.""
"He lied to you.""
"Then why did he leave me his shares?""
"Because he thought you could be controlled.""
That sentence stopped me.
"Controlled?""
Julian nodded.
"He believed if I loved you enough, you'd give me everything willingly.""
I stared at him.
"Did you ever love me?""
He didn't answer.
I asked again.
"Once. Even once?""
Julian looked at me for several seconds.
Then he said:
"Love was never the point.""
That hurt.
But not because I still loved him.
It hurt because I finally understood that every beautiful memory had been contaminated by a person who had never been standing in the same reality as me.
I remembered our first anniversary.
The flowers.
The dinner.
The way he'd whispered, "You're all I need.""
A lie.
Every word.
I felt my baby move.
I placed my hand over my stomach.
Julian noticed.
His eyes dropped.
"For the baby's sake, Nora, stop this.""
My voice became quiet.
"Don't use my child to frighten me.""
"I'm trying to protect our family.""
"You don't have a family.""
His eyebrows lifted.
"What?""
"You have a transaction.""
Daniel looked at me.
Julian stared.
Then he smiled again.
"You're angry.""
"I'm finished.""
"You think walking away changes the law?""
"No.""
I looked at the will in his hand.
"But I think you're forgetting something.""
"What?""
"You need me.""
His smile faded.
I continued.
"You need my signature.""
His silence was answer enough.
"The postnuptial agreement.""
"That document is perfectly valid.""
"Maybe.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Isn't it?""
Daniel nodded.
"It has problems.""
Julian's face tightened.
"What problems?""
Daniel smiled for the first time that night.
"She was under coercion.""
Julian laughed.
"She signed voluntarily.""
"I was six months pregnant.""
"You chose not to sit.""
"You bought two first-class tickets.""
"You had access to the train.""
"You instructed me to stand.""
Julian's expression darkened.
"So you're recording this?""
Daniel looked toward the corner of the room.
A tiny red light blinked.
Julian's face went still.
"You've been recording.""
"Since you entered.""
Julian's eyes shifted toward me.
Then he laughed.
"Very clever.""
He placed the will on the desk.
"Then let's stop pretending.""
He opened the envelope.
My hands went cold.
"Your father changed his will three times in the final month of his life," Julian said.
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible.""
"Is it?""
Julian removed a document.
"Here.""
He held it out.
I didn't move.
Daniel took it.
His face changed as he read.
"What is this?""
"The first version.""
He handed me another.
"The second.""
Then another.
"The final.""
I looked at the signatures.
The pages seemed legitimate.
Every change reduced what I inherited.
My heart raced.
"What did I get in the final version?""
Julian smiled.
"Nothing.""
Silence.
"What?""
"You inherit nothing.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the document.
"That can't be right.""
Julian's expression softened.
"There it is.""
"What?""
"The part where you realize your father didn't love you as much as you thought.""
I slapped him.
The sound echoed through the office.
Julian's head turned.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then he slowly faced me.
His cheek reddening.
Something vicious appeared in his eyes.
"Do that again.""
I didn't move.
"Go ahead.""
Daniel stepped between us.
"Get away from her.""
Julian laughed.
"You see?""
He pointed at me.
"This is what your father wanted.""
I stared.
"What are you talking about?""
"He wanted you angry.""
Julian pulled one more document from the envelope.
"And that's exactly why you need to see this.""
He placed it on the desk.
My father's name was at the bottom.
My name was at the top.
And beneath it was a sentence that made my blood freeze.
*Beneficiary designation: contingent upon legal separation from Julian Blackwood.*
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Julian's expression became almost tender.
"Your father knew.""
"Knew what?""
"That I would betray you.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then why leave her with nothing?""
Julian shook his head.
"He didn't.""
He turned the page.
The document continued.
*Upon proof of financial misconduct, fraud, or coercive control by Julian Blackwood, all assets shall transfer immediately to Nora Bennett.*
My heart stopped.
Julian's smile disappeared.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Daniel grabbed the page.
"It's a trigger clause.""
Julian's eyes hardened.
"That's enough.""
Daniel scanned the document.
"Your father set conditions.""
I looked at Julian.
"What conditions?""
He said nothing.
Daniel answered.
"Divorce. Financial misconduct. Coercive control.""
He looked at Julian.
"She only needs evidence.""
I thought about the photographs.
The postnuptial agreement.
The train tickets.
The messages.
The recordings.
The black case.
Suddenly, the entire night made sense.
My father hadn't left me powerless.
He had built a trap.
Not for me.
For Julian.
Julian saw realization spread across my face.
"You don't understand what happens if that clause activates.""
"Then tell me.""
"You'll lose more than money.""
"What will I lose?""
He hesitated.
Then said:
"Your child.""
My blood ran cold.
Julian smiled.
"You think I need the money?""
He leaned closer.
"I need you to look unstable.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Don't.""
Julian ignored him.
"All I need is one accusation. One scene. One report saying you're emotionally unstable after your father's death.""
I stared at him.
"You planned this.""
"Of course.""
"Even the train?""
"Especially the train.""
My stomach dropped.
"You wanted me to leave.""
"I wanted witnesses.""
Daniel went pale.
"What?""
Julian smiled.
"The station cameras.""
He looked directly at me.
"Nora, you were supposed to get off the train alone, wander into a station, become hysterical, and call someone.""
He spread his hands.
"Then I'd have everything I needed.""
I could barely breathe.
"You wanted to make me look unstable.""
"I wanted you to prove it for me.""
Emily covered her mouth.
"Julian...""
He turned toward her.
"And you were supposed to help.""
Emily shook her head.
"No.""
"You already did.""
He reached into his coat.
For a second, I thought he was pulling out another document.
Instead, he removed his phone.
Then he played a recording.
My own voice filled the room.
My voice from earlier that day.
Crying.
Shaking.
Saying, "I can't do this anymore.""
Julian stopped the recording.
He looked at me.
"One little clip.""
Daniel swore.
I stared at Julian.
"You recorded me.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because tomorrow morning, that clip goes to a judge.""
The room seemed to disappear.
"What judge?""
"The judge who will decide whether you are capable of raising your child.""
I felt my hand tighten over my stomach.
Then Julian smiled.
"But there's still one problem.""
He pointed at the document on the desk.
"You haven't signed the postnuptial agreement.""
I looked at him.
"And I never will.""
His smile faded.
"Then I'll take your baby first.""
He turned to leave.
At the door, he stopped.
"Oh, and Nora?""
I said nothing.
He looked back.
"The final will isn't in the envelope.""
My heart sank.
"Where is it?""
His smile returned.
"In the hands of the one person your father trusted more than you.""
Then he walked out.
Emily stared at the closed door.
Daniel grabbed his coat.
"He's going somewhere.""
"Where?""
Daniel looked at me.
"The only person who can have that will.""
"Who?""
He swallowed.
"Your mother.""
May you like
And before either of us could move, my phone lit up with a message from my mother.
*Nora, don't trust Daniel. He was the last person with your father before he died.*
