Chapter 10: The Truth That Set Me Free
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
I could only stare at the screen.
Julian stood in the hospital corridor with that same calm expression he had worn at the train station.
The same expression he wore when he told me to stand.
The same expression he wore when he watched me struggle.
But behind him was a woman I had never met.
A woman who was apparently connected to every secret that had destroyed my life.
Clara Blackwood.
My grandmother.
Julian smiled.
"Did you hear me, Nora?""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"You knew.""
His smile faded slightly.
"Knew what?""
"That I was Richard's daughter.""
The silence on the call told me everything.
Then Clara moved.
Slowly.
She turned her head toward the camera.
Her eyes were sharp despite her fragile body.
"So," she said quietly.
"She finally knows.""
My blood ran cold.
Julian looked at her.
"Grandmother.""
She ignored him.
She looked directly at me.
"You look like your mother.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Who are you?""
A faint smile crossed her face.
"Someone who spent twenty-seven years trying to correct a mistake.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Hang up.""
Julian heard him.
His eyes shifted.
"Daniel.""
A small smile returned.
"I was wondering when you would appear.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"You killed Rachel.""
Clara's expression didn't change.
"No.""
"Then who did?""
Julian looked away.
For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.
I noticed.
Clara noticed too.
"Julian.""
He didn't answer.
"Tell her.""
Silence.
My heart pounded.
"Tell me what?""
Clara looked at me.
"Your husband didn't kill Rachel.""
A strange relief appeared.
Then she continued.
"But he helped hide what happened.""
I looked at Julian.
He said nothing.
The truth was louder than any confession.
"Why?""
Julian finally spoke.
"Because I had no choice.""
I almost laughed.
"No choice?""
He looked at me.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
He looked down.
For a second, I saw something different.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
"My entire life was built by other people.""
I stared.
"That doesn't excuse what you did.""
"No.""
His voice was quieter.
"It doesn't.""
The admission surprised me.
Clara looked annoyed.
"Don't become weak now.""
Julian looked at her.
"You promised me.""
"And I gave you everything.""
"No.""
His voice hardened.
"You gave me a life that wasn't mine.""
The corridor went silent.
I looked between them.
"What does that mean?""
Clara's eyes narrowed.
"Julian.""
But he continued.
"I was not Richard Blackwood's son.""
I already knew that.
But hearing him say it was different.
"Then who were you?""
He looked at the camera.
"My mother was a woman Richard used and abandoned.""
Clara's expression changed.
"Enough.""
"No.""
Julian shook his head.
"I'm tired of protecting you.""
For the first time, I saw cracks in him.
Real ones.
"My real name wasn't Julian Blackwood.""
I held my breath.
"Then what was it?""
He looked at Clara.
"Thomas Reed.""
Daniel went still.
I turned.
"What?""
Daniel whispered:
"No.""
Julian laughed bitterly.
"Yes.""
The pieces connected.
Thomas Reed.
The name on my birth certificate.
The man everyone said was my father.
But he wasn't.
Julian was his son.
My head spun.
"My mother thought Thomas was my father.""
Julian nodded.
"Because that's what everyone was told.""
"Then why did Richard's name appear?""
"Because Richard wanted control.""
Clara looked away.
Julian continued.
"Richard had money. Power. A company.""
"And you?""
"I had nothing.""
I stared at him.
"So you married me.""
His face changed.
"I was sent to.""
The words hurt more than I expected.
"Sent?""
Clara answered.
"I needed access to Richard's hidden assets.""
I looked at her.
"You used him.""
She smiled.
"Everyone uses everyone.""
"No.""
My voice was stronger.
"That's what people like you tell yourselves.""
Clara studied me.
"You have your father's stubbornness.""
I stepped closer to the phone.
"And you have none of his kindness.""
Her expression hardened.
Julian looked almost surprised.
Maybe because he had never seen me speak that way.
Maybe because the woman he thought he controlled was gone.
Clara leaned toward the camera.
"Your father was weak.""
"No.""
"He loved too easily.""
"No.""
"He trusted people.""
I looked at the woman who had spent years destroying families.
"My father was strong enough to love people.""
Silence.
Then Clara laughed softly.
"You really are his daughter.""
Julian interrupted.
"Nora.""
I looked at him.
"There is something you need to know.""
"What?""
"Your father didn't die because of me.""
I froze.
"Then who?""
Julian looked at Clara.
She stared back.
The answer was clear before anyone spoke.
"She ordered it.""
My body went cold.
Clara didn't deny it.
"Your father became a problem.""
My hands trembled.
"He was your friend.""
"He was sentimental.""
"You killed him.""
"I removed an obstacle.""
I felt sick.
Daniel stepped forward.
"You just admitted murder.""
Clara smiled.
"On a video call?""
She looked amused.
"You think I am careless?""
Julian looked at her.
"Where is the recording?""
Her smile disappeared.
"What?""
"The recording Richard made.""
Everyone went quiet.
Clara's face changed.
Fear.
Small.
But real.
Julian saw it.
"So you don't have it.""
I realized something.
The one thing Clara feared wasn't the will.
It wasn't the company.
It was the truth.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Rachel.
*Saint Mary's. Room 412. Now.*
I looked at Daniel.
"We're going.""
Julian heard.
"No.""
I looked back at the screen.
"Why?""
"Because Rachel isn't the person you think she is.""
"You're lying.""
"I know what she did.""
"What did she do?""
His expression changed.
"She was the one who gave your father the evidence.""
"That's a good thing.""
"No.""
He looked desperate.
"She also gave Clara information about you.""
I froze.
"Why?""
Julian looked at me.
"Because she was trying to save herself.""
The call ended.
I stared at the blank screen.
Daniel grabbed his coat.
"We don't have time.""
My mother stood.
"I'm coming.""
I looked at her.
"You lied to me.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"I know.""
"Why should I trust you?""
"Because I spent twenty-seven years regretting the one thing I did wrong.""
"What was that?""
She looked at me.
"Choosing fear over your father.""
The answer hurt.
But I saw the truth in her face.
Not perfection.
Not innocence.
Regret.
We drove to Saint Mary's.
No one spoke.
When we reached room 412, the door was slightly open.
Daniel pushed it.
Inside, an older woman sat beside the window.
Rachel.
Alive.
She looked at me.
And immediately started crying.
"Nora.""
I froze.
"How do you know my name?""
She smiled sadly.
"Because I held you when you were a baby.""
My breath caught.
"What?""
She looked at my mother.
Then at Daniel.
"Your father wanted you protected.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell me everything.""
Rachel nodded.
"Your father discovered Richard's crimes.""
"Blackwood Holdings?""
"Yes.""
"And Julian?""
She looked down.
"Julian was a victim before he became a villain.""
I didn't know how to feel about that.
"What happened to you?""
"I found proof.""
"What proof?""
Rachel reached into a drawer.
She pulled out a small recorder.
My heart stopped.
"The recording.""
She nodded.
"Your father made this before he died.""
I pressed play.
My father's voice filled the room.
"Nora.""
I covered my mouth.
His voice.
After eleven months.
Still familiar.
Still my father.
"If you are hearing this, then I failed to protect you.""
Tears fell.
"But I need you to know something.""
A pause.
"I never cared about the company.""
I closed my eyes.
"I cared about you.""
Rachel looked away.
The recording continued.
"Julian was never the enemy I feared most.""
Everyone listened.
"The person behind everything was Clara.""
A sound escaped my throat.
"She believed money was more important than people.""
My father's voice became weaker.
"But Nora, listen carefully.""
The room went silent.
"The greatest mistake I made was believing I could fix broken people.""
A pause.
"Julian was broken.""
I looked down.
"But you are not responsible for saving him.""
Tears blurred my vision.
"Choose yourself.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rachel said:
"Your father created one final legal document.""
I looked at her.
"The real will?""
She nodded.
"The one Julian and Clara were searching for.""
"Where is it?""
Rachel smiled.
"Your father hid it where no one would think to look.""
"Where?""
She pointed.
At me.
I froze.
"What?""
"He left it with the only person he trusted completely.""
I shook my head.
"I don't have anything.""
Rachel smiled.
"Yes, you do.""
She reached toward my necklace.
The necklace my father had given me when I turned eighteen.
I touched it.
"The pendant?""
Rachel nodded.
"Open it.""
My fingers trembled as I removed the small silver pendant.
Inside was a tiny rolled piece of paper.
A key code.
And one sentence.
*The truth was never hidden from you. It was hidden inside you.*
I cried.
Not because I had lost everything.
But because I finally understood.
My father had never abandoned me.
He had been fighting for me until his last breath.
Months later, Julian was sentenced after the evidence from the recordings, documents, and financial records became public.
Clara faced charges for her role in the years of fraud and my father's death.
Emily testified against him.
Daniel rebuilt his father's company with a new board and returned control of my inheritance to me.
But the biggest change wasn't money.
It wasn't the company.
It wasn't proving Julian wrong.
It was the day I held my baby for the first time.
I looked into those tiny eyes and remembered standing in that freezing train station.
I remembered thinking I had been abandoned.
But I wasn't.
I had been given the first chance to save myself.
Years later, I still kept the train ticket from that day.
Not because it reminded me of Julian.
Because it reminded me of the moment I finally chose my own life.
The moment I stepped off the train.
The moment I stopped begging someone else to value me.
May you like
And the moment I learned the truth:
Sometimes the door that closes behind you is the one that finally sets you free.
