Chapter 5

The stress sent me into early labor.

I was thirty-four weeks pregnant. Two weeks after the incident in the hallway. Two weeks of being locked in the house, watched by Barbara, controlled by Marcus.

I woke up at three in the morning with a pain in my back that wouldn't go away. Then my water broke.

"Marcus," I said, shaking him. "The baby's coming."

He drove me to the hospital. Barbara came too.

At the hospital, they rushed me into a room. The contractions were coming fast. I was in agony.

But through the pain, I was thinking.

This was my chance.

The hospital was full of people. Nurses. Doctors. Witnesses. If I could just get someone alone—tell them what was happening—maybe they could help me.

But Marcus wouldn't leave my side. He held my hand through every contraction, smiling at the nurses, telling them how much he loved me.

"She's been so brave," he'd say. "Such a strong mother."

They ate it up. They thought he was the perfect husband.

Barbara sat in the corner, watching me. She knew. She knew I'd try something.

When the doctor checked me, she frowned. "The baby's heart rate is dropping. We need to do an emergency C-section."

Everything happened fast after that. They wheeled me into the operating room. Marcus was allowed to come in, in scrubs, holding my hand.

And then I heard it.

The most beautiful sound in the world.

A baby crying.

"It's a girl," the doctor said. "Healthy lungs, that one."

They held her up. She was tiny, red-faced, screaming her head off. And she was perfect.

"Lily," I whispered. "Her name is Lily."

Marcus cut the cord. He was smiling. But when he looked at me, there was something else in his eyes. Possessiveness. Pride. Like Lily was his property.

They took Lily to the nursery to clean her up. Marcus went with them.

And I was alone. For the first time in weeks.

A nurse came in to check my vitals. Her name tag said DONNA.

It was the same Donna from my doctor's office. She'd transferred to the hospital.

"Sarah," she said, her eyes wide. "I was hoping I'd see you again. But not like this."

"Donna," I grabbed her hand. "Please. You have to help me. He's keeping me prisoner. He took my phone, my keys. He hit me. He's going to take my baby."

Donna's face hardened. She looked around, then leaned in close.

"I've already spoken to the hospital social worker," she whispered. "We suspected. The bruising. The way he watches you. We're going to help you. But you have to be brave. Can you do that?"

I nodded, tears in my eyes.

"There's a safe house. The social worker is arranging it. When you're discharged, we're not sending you home. We're sending you there. But Marcus can't know. Do you understand?"

"Yes," I whispered. "Yes, whatever you say."

"Good. Now—act normal. Let him think everything is fine. We'll handle the rest."

She squeezed my hand and left.

A few minutes later, Marcus came back with Lily. He placed her in my arms.

"Look at her," he said, his voice soft. "She's perfect. Just like her father."

I looked down at my daughter. Her tiny hand wrapped around my finger.

May you like

And I made her a promise.

I would get us out of here. No matter what it took.
