Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Back

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The man standing outside the ballroom doors looked exactly like the photograph.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair was almost completely gray now.

But there was no mistaking him.

Thomas Sterling.

Ethan’s father.

The man everyone believed had been dead for twenty-eight years.

Ethan stared at him like he was seeing a ghost.

“Dad?””

The word barely left his mouth.

Thomas looked at him.

And for a moment, his expression softened.

Then his eyes moved past him.

Toward Olivia.

The softness disappeared.

“You really did it.””

Olivia stepped backward.

“No.””

Her voice was almost a whisper.

“You can’t be here.””

Thomas entered the ballroom.

The guests moved away from him instinctively.

Phones rose again.

People whispered.

A wedding that had started with flowers and champagne had become something nobody would ever forget.

I looked at Ethan.

His face had completely changed.

All the certainty he had carried all day was gone.

“Is that really him?””

He nodded slowly.

“I thought he was dead.””

Thomas stopped several feet away from us.

“I know.””

Ethan’s eyes filled with confusion.

“What happened?””

Thomas looked at Olivia.

“She told you I died.””

Olivia shook her head.

“Don't do this.””

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“You destroyed everything twenty-eight years ago.””

I looked at Arthur.

The attorney looked like he had aged ten years in the last minute.

“You knew,” I said.

He lowered his eyes.

“I suspected.””

“You knew he was alive?””

“I knew there were questions.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Arthur sighed.

“After Thomas disappeared, Olivia instructed me to prepare documents.””

“Documents for what?””

“His death.””

My stomach tightened.

“Before anyone found a body?””

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You helped her?””

Arthur looked ashamed.

“I was his attorney.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The old man swallowed.

“I made mistakes.””

Thomas looked at him.

“We all did.””

I turned toward Thomas.

“Where were you?””

His eyes moved to the key in my hand.

“Your grandmother kept you away from this family for a reason.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Evelyn Morgan knew Olivia would do anything to protect the Sterling name.””

Olivia snapped.

“You don't get to say her name.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You killed her.””

The room went silent.

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

Thomas looked at me.

“I’m sorry, Clara.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“No, you don't get to walk in here after twenty-eight years and accuse people without explaining.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He looked at Ethan.

“Your mother didn't kill Evelyn.””

Olivia exhaled.

For one second, I thought I had misunderstood.

Then Thomas continued.

“She ordered someone else to do it.””

The relief disappeared.

I stared at Olivia.

She looked furious.

“Liar.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Evelyn discovered the accounts.””

Arthur nodded.

“The ledger.””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at me.

“She found out my father had built the Sterling fortune through fraud.””

I listened.

“She also found out Olivia had continued it after she married into the family.””

Olivia laughed.

“You expect them to believe that?””

Thomas looked at Ethan.

“I expect my son to finally hear the truth.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Thomas looked hurt.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was forced to.””

“By who?””

Thomas looked at Olivia.

The answer was obvious.

But he still said it.

“Your mother.””

Olivia’s face hardened.

“You left.””

“I ran.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“You threatened my son.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked at him.

“You were eight years old when you first learned how dangerous your mother could be.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I was twenty-three when you died.””

Thomas looked confused.

“No.””

A chill moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

Thomas looked at Ethan.

“You were eight.””

The entire room became still.

Ethan’s face changed.

“No.””

Thomas whispered:

“The man who died in that house was not me.””

My breath caught.

Everyone stared.

“Then who was it?”” I asked.

Thomas looked at Olivia.

“Her first husband.””

Silence.

Olivia's face turned white.

“What?””

Ethan whispered.

“My mother was married before?””

Thomas nodded.

“Before she married me.””

Arthur spoke quietly.

“The official records were sealed.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You didn't know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Olivia stared at Thomas.

“You promised.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You threatened me with my own child.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas’s voice softened.

“Olivia wanted control of everything.””

“The company?””

“The money.””

“The inheritance?””

“Yes.””

My hand tightened around the key.

“And Bellmore?””

Thomas looked at it.

“Bellmore was where Evelyn hid the evidence.””

I looked down.

“Room Seventeen.””

He nodded.

“Everything is there.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Thomas looked at his son.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you get it?””

“Because Olivia knew where I was.””

“And you just left it?””

“I tried.””

Thomas’s voice cracked.

“Your grandmother made me promise that if anything happened to her, I would keep the evidence hidden until someone she trusted came for it.””

I frowned.

“Someone she trusted?””

Thomas looked at me.

“You.””

I shook my head.

“She didn't even know me.””

“She did.””

“What?””

Thomas smiled sadly.

“She wrote letters.””

My heart skipped.

“Letters?””

“She wrote to you.””

I stared.

“My grandmother?””

“Yes.””

“But I never got them.””

Thomas looked at Olivia.

Nobody spoke.

Then Olivia whispered:

“I destroyed them.””

The confession was so quiet that I almost missed it.

Ethan turned.

“Mom.””

Olivia looked around.

The entire room was watching her.

“I had to.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“You wanted control.””

Olivia’s eyes flashed.

“You don't understand what I sacrificed.””

“You sacrificed everyone else.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You think I wanted this?””

Thomas stared at her.

“You pushed Evelyn down those stairs.””

A scream escaped someone in the crowd.

I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

“No.””

Olivia looked at him.

“You have no proof.””

Thomas nodded.

“Not yet.””

I looked at the key.

“Room Seventeen.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Yes.””

“That's where the proof is?””

“Yes.””

Ethan stepped between us.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at his father.

“If you knew all this…”

Thomas waited.

“Why did you let me marry Clara?””

The question hit harder than anything else.

Thomas looked at him.

“I didn't know about Clara.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?””

“I returned because I received a letter.””

“From who?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your grandmother.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

He reached inside his coat.

He pulled out an envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My name was written across the front.

My hands began shaking.

“That’s mine.””

Thomas nodded.

“She wrote it before she died.””

I took the envelope.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

The same handwriting that had filled birthday cards.

The same handwriting that had written recipes and notes left on the kitchen counter.

I opened my mouth.

No words came.

Then I noticed something.

The envelope had never been opened.

“How?””

Thomas looked at Olivia.

“She never found this one.””

Olivia suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed the envelope from my hand.

Security reacted immediately.

My father stepped forward.

“Give that back.””

Olivia backed away.

Her face had completely changed.

No elegance.

No control.

Only panic.

“None of you understand.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain.””

She clutched the letter.

“I was trying to save this family.””

Thomas said quietly:

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She was trying to save herself.””

Olivia tore the envelope open.

But before she could remove the paper, the lights in the ballroom suddenly went out.

People screamed.

The music system clicked.

Emergency lights flickered on.

And in the darkness, someone grabbed my shoulder.

I spun around.

A hand covered my mouth.

A voice whispered in my ear.

“Clara, don't trust Thomas.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized the voice.

It was Ethan’s.

But Ethan was standing across the room.

Watching me.

The person behind me whispered again.

“Your grandmother didn't hide the truth from the Sterlings.””

May you like

A pause.

“She hid it from you.””
